August 16, 201411 yr Terrific article. Loved this quote: It’s the Class AAA conundrum: Play every day in the minors and find a rhythm, or stay in the majors and face inordinate pressure with each at-bat, because there’s no telling when the next one might come. I had a little league coach who was a first-round pick of the Cubs in the 70s out of high school, blew out his knee a couple seasons into his career and never recovered. Played for a few more seasons, but never made the Big Leagues. I have always wondered what's worse: Being in his spot, never making it to the Big Leagues or being a guy who gets a taste of it here and there, but can't stick. Interesting....I had a baseball coach with that exact same story. He blew out his knee skiing. I can't remember if he was a 1st or 2nd round pick. Wonder if it would be the same person. I presume it couldn't be since we are similar ages and I believe mine has lived in California now most of his life.
August 18, 201411 yr Here is the worst scenario IMO. So a teacher at my high school was a minor league pitcher for many seasons. He got called up by the Expos from AAA one time in his mid 20's and was put in the bullpen. He didn't get into the game that night and was sent back down the next day. He was never called up again.
