This season is going to be a real test for Grifol. He doesn't have the added benefit of playing 19 against Detroit and Kansas City, like in the past.

It could legitimately be a 70-92 season.

No. White Sox didn't have an advantage last year. White Sox were a  mostly a .500 team against EAST-Central-West and Inter-league. They were a .500 team against every division by 1-2 games in each direction.

I see a continued trend from last year where they haven’t been able to put it together. Either they pitch well and don’t hit, or they hit well and don’t pitch and they rarely put the two together. At best, this team looks like a .500 team.

They probably benefited from playing their division so much that they didn’t have to compete as much against the other divisions and that is how they could finish in second, just what JR’s philosophy is. Now that they have this new schedule, they just can’t keep pace with the other teams. The rest of the league got better, the Sox did not.

I thought you had a great summary in the first paragraph but I think you lost it in the 2nd one. In 2022, the White Sox finished 15-17 against the East,  37-39 w Central,  18-16 w West and 11-9 against inter-league. So in 2022, they basically finished within a game of .500 against  every division in baseball.  So the White Sox did not "benefit" from playing their own division since they were really .500 against every division they played. They were really a perfect .500 team.

  3. Even with some minor injuries to Eloy and Moncada and a more serious injury to TA,  the Sox have been hitting the ball pretty well.  I am concerned about BB since the Sox continue to not be patient at the plate. But outside of Cease the starters and bullpen have struggled. I do hope the offensive will be good once the lineup is restored but further injuries will hurt because the bench seems pretty weak. The Pitching needs to come around or the Sox will really struggle since most of the starters and relievers have been up and down.

You mean like the Tampa Bay Rays do with one the smallest yearly payrolls and one of the highest yearly ranked farm systems?

Of course we all know, it will be a freezing day in hell before this ever happens here until the POS owner dies or sells the team or just maybe, fires the loser GM Rick Hahn and goes and steals a smart executive from a winning baseball organization and culture...perhaps like the Rays.

That would be Chaim Bloom the former Senior VP of Baseball Operations who the Red Sox hired in 2019 to become Chief Baseball Officer. Bloom's new roster construction quickly developed a last place finish in 2022 and the 2023 outlook is just as bad as the White Sox. Bloom may be is on thin ice for 2023

It pretty much spells the death of the rebuild.  Of course, it could just as easily be Moncada’s season heading south again with the back, right?

In that case, trying to think of any players that WOULDN’T be traded or would likely be the core of the team moving forward.

Robert and Cease are the most valuable assets on the roster.  Perhaps the only two really premium assets remaining.

Surely, Lynn, Giolito, Reynaldo (really team friendly extension possible, but premature…limited time to decide), Clevinger, Graveman, Bummer, Kelly would all be gone…Benintendi’s presence really makes zero sense in a rebuilding situation but 50/50 Hahn would have to keep him after he just signed for five long years.  Moncada salary dumped upon the highest bidder.  Same with Grandal, Alberto, Andrus.

What to do with Kopech if you’re not going to extend him?  He won’t be around in time for the next rebuild to gel.

What value does Jimenez realistically have if he can’t stay healthy even as a full time DH?   Two more big decisions with these two.

TA7 (depends on the seriousness of his injury and readiness of Colson), Kopech, Crochet, Hendriks (unless trade value returns in 2023), Colas, Vaughn are players you would expect to still be around for various reasons, Zavala/Perez, Romy, Sosa, etc.  Colson Montgomery could be a big league starter by late this year but likelier to be May, 2023, already missing April with the oblique).  Burger pretty much would have to take over third for Moncada, and Sheets would stick for DH/1B/PH (need offense from SOMEWHERE) despite both players being increasingly out of place in a speed/defense-oriented game.

Seems a decision on Dylan Cease (trade/extend) is really going to be the next domino to fall if things start to go south and attendance craters.  And it’s not like they can offer him the same deal Byron Buxton accepted…it would be for at least $125-140 million.  For a extreme velocity/stuff pitcher with TJ in his past.

Bleak bleak bleak…but hopefully Hahn isn’t allowed to make a single one of these critical decisions moving forward.

I asked you the same question last week. Despite a very mediocre season last year, the Sox increased attendance by 300,000+ in 2022.  While will attendance crater this year if it increased last year despite TLR and a lot of injuries?  I think 2023 will see attendance up by over 500,000.

  6. 19 hours ago, ShoeLessRob said:

Not really, i anticipate a record low in attendance this year. Most Sox fans I know are done with this s%*#.

White Sox attendance was up in 2022 over 2021 by 12.5% despite a poor showing.  I think it will be up again to 2 Million this year.

  7. I think it is too early to determine that. As long as the Central is mediocre, the Sox can trend at .500 till August and then push into  the 1st spot in September in the Central. However, if any Central team other than Sox opens up a large lead, then trending at .500 may put the Sox outside looking in if multiple East or West  teams  are having good years.

With him (and some others on this team) it is constant. Just another reason why many Sox fans are angry, frustrated and have decided to scale back interest.

Lip: Not sure how you concluded that White Sox fans have scaled back interest in the White Sox. The 2022 Sox attendance was up over 2020. I will assume with a new Manager, attendance will be up to begin this season as well.

Are season tickets down over the 2022 season? As a fan, I think a new manager will increase interest with the team to begin a new season  this early .

What do you base interest scaled back so far this season?

I'm pretty sure he was tipping his pitches.

I was sitting 18 rows up on the on deck circle for the Giants and right after Joc hit the 1st HR, he immediately talked to the next hitter about it as he returned to the dugout from circling the bases.

Joc was all over Kopech in the 3 ABs he faced him.

    That might make more sense

Cease had a bad spring too and looked like the best pitcher on the planet the other day.  These guys don't really care about ST.  They're just warming their arms up.

But Kopech was still just warming his arm up yesterday as well.  Hopefully next start will be an improvement.

    Kopech will be fine

Let's hope so. He had a poor spring giving up 11 runs in 12 inning but you can only take so much out of Spring training results. Hopefully he shows more next start.

No one here has any real idea how these guys are going to hit this year.

Grandal went from the best hitter on the team in 2021 (155 OPS+)  to its worst regular in 2022 (64 OPS+).

    Moncada went from a 116 OPS+ to a 76 OPS+

    Luis Robert went from 154 OPS+ to 109 OPS+

Eloy went from 99 OPS+ to leading the team with 140 OPS+

Elvis Andrus was the Sox' 3rd best hitter while he was with the team at 116 OPS+

Andrew Vaughn elevated from 91 OPS to 111 OPS+.

Tim Anderson only played 79 games.

    *********

That being said, if you project each player to be the best version of themselves, here's the order I would use:

    1. Anderson.  Still the sparkplug of the team.

    2. Robert.  Biggest upside of anyone.  Speed should put him near the top.

    3. Moncada.  His best version is better than Benitendi.

    4. Eloy.  The HR masher.

    5. Benintendi. Gets on base for Vaughn.

    6. Vaughn.  Key RBI spot

    7. Colas. Lefty could move up if he mashes.

    8. Grandal/Zavala.  Grandal might deserve to be higher, but plays the least.

    9. Andrus. Need him to reprise last year's numbers for the Sox

I would only say that 3rd is a key position which Abreu has held for a while. This is fine to start the year but if Moncada struggles early, you cannot be as patient with a 3 hitter as some other spots.  I am not sure Benintendi is a 3 , as much as a 6 or 7, so I am not sure how we reassign the 3 if Moncada struggles

So maybe more than just money factored in his decision?

Certainly money is an issue. But so is playing time/position. I think the Sox thought Beni would be the full time left-fielder where the Yankees thought he was more apt to be a  platoon guy.   I think  he has a great chance to be an everyday outfielder.

2 spring training games with the 2nd one being mostly AA kids and we're really going to act like these games mean something ?

Just a reminder about Spring Training games, especially in Florida. Most teams limit training games to home teams. So if the Red Sox are playing the Yankees in Tampa, the Red Sox will limit "MLB " players from travelling 3 hours back and forth to play a 3 or 4 inning  game before they start subbing. Instead most of the "MLB" players will work out in their own facilities and play the next day  at home. Only games that are played close by or because a certain player( especially a starter) needs live competition see "MLB" players spending 4-6 hours riding a bus to games.

Red Sox Saturday played mostly minor leaguers Saturday on the road and mostly starters yesterday  at home

"I've seen Leury play for a while. Leury's a talented player. I haven't spoken to him yet.

I find this strange. I would think a new manager would have had a conversation, even if it was brief, with every member of the 25 man roster the first few days of camp. Even if it was just a hi, a handshake, and a welcome aboard. Worse case at least a cell call to say hello.

I just think they don’t want to trade the prospects that people want. The system isn’t in great shape and we all know who the top 11 guys are. The payroll issue is on the front office for sure but there were so many moves influenced by La Russa. Ownership needed to spend like $225 million this year to throw money at the problem. It’s the only thing that made sense but Jerry Reinsdorf doesn’t give a s%*# about that.

I would add the starters as well. If you can't/won't move the prospects, then the next move is to try and trade a starter or two to improve the overall roster. Maybe last fall, 1 or 2 of Moncada, Anderson, Vaughn, Eloy, Robert or Hendricks could have been moved to try and improve the overall roster  without affecting the SP.  Now, Abreu is gone, so Vaughn probably has to stay and Hendricks has health issues so he can't be moved as well.  Maybe that is too much work on the Front Office to try and trade Anderson, Robert or Eloy  and try and create a better overall roster.

I think they will be better than last year which isn’t saying a lot. First, they have to stay healthy. Second, some attitude adjustments are in order especially from Moncada and Anderson. Third, who will be the closer now that Liam is out probably for the year. Fourth, I hope I’m wrong but I think the loss of Abreu is going to hurt. Fifth point and on the good side is I think that Grifol is going to be a damn good manager. I say the Sox go 86-76 and contend for a WC.

Last season, the Boston Bruins and Celtics ended up with new coaches. At this point, both teams have the best records in their respective leagues. So, who knows what change can bring?
