Scouting Report

Strengths: Is a true baseball player and puts the team ahead of him. Has a great amount of baseball know-how. Volunteered to move from 3B to C, and has shown very good raw ability behind the plate with a really strong arm. However, his ability to play 3B gives him added versatility. Has a very good approach from both sides of plate, and knows how to hit. Has gap to gap power and is a line drive hitter who uses the whole field. Has decent speed for a catcher.

Negatives: Can he stick behind the plate? So far has had a very mediocre Junior campaign offensively.

Diego Seastrunk is a 2006 3B/RHP from Channelview HS in Texas, with a 5'8", 180 lb. frame. Strong compact body, some speed, very strong arm, quick actions, soft hands, plus range, good body control, nice feet, very good defensive player, legitimate switch hitter, quick bat, line drive hitter, leverage in swing, balanced swing, compact delivery on the mound, high 80s fastball, outstanding CV, He is real real good! two-way prospect, good student as well.

My Take

I'm a big fan of his and he is a real baseball player. Puts the team ahead of himself and has just a great feel for the game. Has a very good approach at the plate as well, as some raw ability behind the plate. Might be a bit of a project, but a lot of upside with him. Also, he has a bit of a short, stocky frame you would expect out of a catcher.

I'd be tempted to take him at 71, but there isn't much buzz about him, so if we could get him in the 3rd, 4th, or 5th, I'd be ecstatic. Worst case scenario, IMO, is a decent hitting backup C/3B.

Rice tends to produce a lot of pitchers, correct? What's their track record like with positional talent?

Rice has been a pitching farm-house and your right, off the top of my head I can't think of a ton of positional players going early in the draft out of Rice. That said, he's done a good job handling Rice's pitching staff. The question is how involved Seastrunk is in calling pitches and stuff since at the collegiate level, 98% of the time the calls come from the dugout.

He is a project at the catcher position. I think the reason for his hitting struggles this year (he had a great offensive year last year) is that he has been spending and focusing most of his time on catching. However, he seems like the type that will have no problem learning.

I'm not a scout by any means, but...I love the kid's batting approach...the head stays back and still, the hands are high, and the SWING...man that is a sweet swing.

His catching video is solid, just made a high throw...but that UCLA batter really didn't get out of the way too much. Quick pop up and throw motion.

I would like the WS to get this kid...this is the kind of player we need.

  • 3 weeks later...

Rice is on ESPN if anyone's interested in watching him behind the plate.

I'm pretty sure Berkman and Paul Janish went there.

Seastrunk looks solid behind the plate and has a very, nice fluid approach at the plate. He needs to work on waiting for pitches, but he's got good strike zone recognition.

He just threw out Mitchell for LSU, a huge basestealing threat, at 3rd. He made a nice throw at 2nd to get him earlier, but Mitchell had a huge jump. I'm impressed with this guy behind the plate.

I would love to get Diego with our 3rd pick.

I f***ing love ESPN 360... get to watch the replays of all the college baseball games. Gonna watch the first game of Rice vs. LSU right now.

Apparently Seastrunk calls the games as well... very impressive considering this is his first time catching. Looks like he's got the raw tools to be really good behind the plate too.

I hope we nab this guy between rounds 3-5.
