  1. MLBTR listed the players out of options and some interesting guys on the list.

    Sean Newcomb

    Tyler Beede

    Dillon Peters

    Jeff Hoffman

It might be worth taking a shot on a guy who is about to be DFA'ed or could be had for cheap rather than dumpster diving the FA market. At least by doing a trade if it works out you have a player with a bit of control

  2. This is a very good trade.

Collins can't play he strikes out way to often and he is awful defensively. I have zero faith in him ever amounting to anything. McGuire still has upside because he's been able to hit at a competent level at times in both the minor leagues and MLB level. All he has to do is hit around .700 and he should be an excellent backup he's also under control till 2026. Essentially we traded someone who probably was going to be DFA'ed at some point and has had a - WAR the last three years for a defensive catcher with some upside.

Been really impressed with the last two trades.

Madrigal would have been having decent seasons and helping win playoffs series for 10+ years.. There is no way to fix this mess, just try to mitigate damage.

Madrigal was always going to be a slap hitting "little person" .

The mistake wasn't trading him it was drafting him in the first place and holding onto him doesn't fix anything. He had marginal value it is what it is. Glad to have Pollock

To answer the RF question though, Pollock does only have 6 career games there. Majority of his Dodgers tenure was in left, but he did spend time in center.

People need to hold off on the lineup stuff anyways we are going to have injuries and he is going to move around the fact he can play CF is a plus though.

47%?  That means he now runs slower than Paul Konerko.

Anyway, I'm glad for the trade, but will be surprised if he ever played better than Adam Engel just because the Phillies gave up for a minor league  reliever that maxed out his physical profile at 24YO. As previously stated, the Sox have to keep at this.

Part of it seemed to be injuries but it also seems like the grind got to him.

    https://theathletic.com/2520198/2021/04/14/adam-haseley-takes-a-personal-leave-as-phillies-and-former-top-pick-press-pause/?source=emp_shared_article

There were times in 2020, he said, when he did not compete as he should. “Especially against myself,” Haseley said on Feb. 28. This became motivation. He’s always been regarded by evaluators as a “low-motor” player because he is quiet, even among his teammates, and does not show much emotion on the field.

One thing I will say if he isn't playing hard Tony isn't going to play him. When he entered the league in 2019 he played hard defensively and put up a 1.8 bWAR in 67 games. He also plays CF and is a LHB it's worth a look.

    What?

The NBA and NFL, two leagues that don't have exemptions, are much better constructed for the "good of the whole" than MLB.

I don't think you seem to understand what an anti-trust exemption grants. Might want to read up on what it means before spewing off a bunch of nonsense.

edit: the way MLB operates the MiLB for example would not be allowed had they not had an exemption and no one can argue that isn't a large worker base that is being greatly exploited.

I am not sure what you are attempting to argue. NBA, NFL, NHL, etc teams operate as monopolies in their territories and are given exclusive rights. What there has been is the lack sort of will on the owners part to run afoul of each other and take them to court but Al Davis famously did and won so it's not like it's an impossibility.

For MLB owners because of the anti-trust decision it's impossible to exert any sort of leverage over the rest of the league. It's one of the reasons why the MLB has had so few relocation's in comparison to other leagues.

This is all opinion based on nothing but their "profiles" ? At least Gavin got in some super productive PA's last year where he didn't strike out a ton (22.4%) and  supposedly doesn't walk much (8.9%) Also .556 Slg % against RH's .

So a RH guy like Burger on a mostly RHH team who is the same age as Sheets, with an extensive injury background fits in better because we have him longer so we can figure out if the Sox can send Moncada back to 2nd base . Positional versatility is not being able to play just 3rd base. 1st base and DH don't count because any big guy should be able to play 1st and DH.

A dime a dozen really ? I'll keep that in mind since a LH power bat with a decent K rate and walk rate is so easy to find. Maybe you can scan some MLB rosters and find a few for me who did what Gavin did in his MLB rookie season. I know he's got skeptics but he did every thing he could short of getting a bunch of AB's to prove he should get plenty of AB's on a team starved for LH balance and power. Vaughn is the RH bat who needs the playing time not Burger to move Moncada to 2nd base.

What's your next suggestion, Kimbrel replacing Hendriks as closer and Liam being the setup guy ?

Of course we are talking basically 180 PA for Sheets last year and with Burger 42 PA. I am willing to bet on Burgers approach along with his talent translating more at the MLB level.

I also think his ability to play 3B makes him more valuable. They also appear to be trying him out at 2nd. I don't expect he will be able to play there fulltime infact I'd be shocked if he could play there even part time but the fact they are attempting to do so sort of tells you they are trying to find a way to get his bat playing time.

As far as Sheets goes like I said my preference is to keep him he probably has very little value in a trade anyways so unless it's to just clear a spot it doesn't make a ton of sense. However, I don't have a ton of expectations for him but I'd be happy for him to prove me wrong

  8. It's pretty self-evident because unless you live in New York or one of the larger markets baseball basically is constructed for the good of the "whole" rather than a bunch of independent franchises operating completely in their self-interest.

Without anti-trust there is nothing prevent small market teams from moving their teams to larger cities other than provoking ire from other owners. Furthermore at a time of record inflation where many Americans are worried about how to put food on their table and massive suffering around the world it is f'n trite to be having a debate about MLB antitrust.

Maybe Sanders could focus on an issue that actually matters to Americans.

What % of PAs does the left handed hitter generally get in a platoon?  Because that is the amount of time Vaughn will be sitting on the bench in that scenario.

Why would we trade Burger and keep Sheets? Burger is under control until 2028. Use him as a 1B/3B/DH. We really have no bench guys who can hit other than 1B/DH types. Keep Eloy at LH. Vaughn becomes the DH and helps give Abreau a rest at 1b. There should be at least 400 PA for the role and possible more in case of an injury. Hell if he plays well enough you can figure it out possibly by having him play 3B and moving Moncada back to 2B.

Burger profile as a OBP guy with decent power who has positional versatility looks to be a be a heck of a lot more likely for sustainable success than Sheets. Furthermore Burger value right now isn't anywhere near where it will be if he plays well even in an UT role next year. So it makes much more sense to keep him over Sheets. I'd probably keep both guys with sheets profile are a dime a dozen in this league. He strikes out a ton doesn't walk much and has tower power and only plays 1B/DH.

He has a lot of talent, but another guy who walks too many.  Seems to have lost whatever he had.  Maybe new scenery and coaching will help.

His issue has always been he has a good fastball with good velocity but it's very straight with not a lot of spin.

Ken Harrelson played professionally for 9 years and was a broadcaster for 42. Let’s make him the GM.

This is a ridiculous post but you already knew that.

TLR is literally already in the HOF as a manager. He didn't need to stretch his qualifications for the job. I mean really.

I thought the same thing at first. The math checks out, this was from last year:

What often doesn't get discussed is he also played in the majors for 6 years and played a total of 16 years in the minors plus majors and 1295 games. He is literally a baseball lifer.

But some would have you believe he is some sort of idiot. Yes he is a hardass and honestly he has every right to be. He knows the game of baseball inside and out.

I am not sure how you came to the political bigot conclusion. Go  back and look at the hiring and numerous posters objected because of his DUI record, especially as a repeat offender.   I think TLR has done a very good job on the field and in the clubhouse this year as well as the past. But off the field he is a loser and is really lucky he has avoided serious charges.

First of all it's obvious by who are his loudest critics on the board. It's also obvious because the national media who go after TLR for his age and being "out of touch" don't go after Dusty Baker in a similar way.

I also look at the reaction to Guillen when he was rumored to be interested in coming back people mentioned him being a traitor and quitter but noone mentioned him being an admitted drunk as one of the reasons he shouldn't be hired. In any case I've probably said enough back to lurking.

I agree .  The automatic position of some on this board is anti-TLR so it is difficult to even take anything they say regarding him seriously.  It is perfectly reasonable to be irritated when the opposing pitcher is missing his spots by so much that one of your players is taking a 97 mph fastball to the head.

It isn't even that TLR been around the game longer then most of these know it all posters have been alive and has seen it all. He knows what the Indians did was reckless by calling a pitch high and inside with a pitcher who had lost his command.

He also articulated the issue of what happened perfectly and why he was upset/disappointed with the Indians and to be quite honest in the olden days the next Indians hitter would have gotten one right in the ribs. They didn't. So what exactly are the wusses on the board angry about? The fact he defended Abreu? Called out the Indians? If he didn't would they have been happy? Nope.

The reason? Their hatred of TLR is completely not related to baseball it isn't honestly even to do with his DUI. They are political bigots and they will continue to attack one the greatest managers of all time as somehow unqualified no matter how ridiculous he continues to make them look in the process.

Pitchers hit wrong spots all of the time. He should've figured that out with his own pen.

It wasn't just the fact he called a pitch inside it was the fact he called it high and inside with a pitcher that had no control.

La Russa was completely right and in ole school baseball the next Indians player would have been plunked whether the pitch was intentional or not. Why the fuck should sox players care whether it was intentional to begin with?

  16. Calls are starting to come in to boycott MLB baseball. From Trump. To radio sports personalities. To politicians.

    https://www.newsweek.com/mlb-boycott-calls-grow-after-donald-trump-hits-out-over-all-star-game-1580840

For me I have no interest in baseball or giving any money to support the direction Manfred has taken MLB. Since the season has started I haven't watched a single game and it will be interesting to see what the numbers are for baseball since their fans tend to skew older and conservative. Going to war with the majority of your fanbase doesn't seem to be overly well thought out but we will see.

You need ID to pick up your tickets. ID to receive the credit card to purchase the tickets. ID to purchase beer at the stadium. You need ID to get to the stadium in the form of a drivers license.

The MLB has also came out in support of a vaccine card for attending games which you guess it is more ID (https://www.mlb.com/yankees/ballpark/health-and-safety/testing-requirements-faq) ID for voting? That is where they draw the line apparehently well they have theirs and I have mine. I'll won't be purchasing the MLB package and going to any games until they decide their business is baseball/sports instead of politics.

    A massive upgrade in RF....

He gonna bounce back from his 1.5 bWAR in 2019 too lol?

You mean the 2.3 fWAR? And yes the nationals ballpark is one of the hardest to play defense and he can't cover the same ground as he used to. If he can put up a similar level of offense with even mediocre defense he'll be a bargain
