    Heading into the season I didn’t think we had a prayer at the #1 pick in next year’s draft.  That would sure be tasty.  Basically allows for one more bust of the top guys.

    I don't see it happening. A month from now we could have Rodon and Kopech in the rotation. Might be a whole different team then.

    If the attached is correct, the White Sox  had the 2nd largest % increase in ticket prices in 2018. But they also are in the bottom 3rd for overall ticket pricing.   They probably should be running ticket promotions to attract fans understanding the product may be more AAA  than MLB quality.

    They have some far out promotions. For example, the Star Wars night. If you buy tickets through their link, you get a Star Wars/Sox beanie, the hawk solo bobblehead and can walk around the warning track in a mini parade before the game. That's a lot of extras to entice people.

    Well that’s not the argument of this thread in the slightest.  I fully expected this team to be bad and have been one of the most vocal supporters of giving our young players the time needed to develop (see my many responses on Moncada).  But there is bad and there is getting absolutely destroyed on a daily basis.  Losing like this is not part of the process and does not provide any positive benefit whatsoever.  We can continue pretending these guys are robots, but it’s only human nature to be affected by this type of losing.  Guys will most definitely start pressing & start to lose focus.  We’re already starting to see that and it will only get worse if this type of losing continues.

    And when I suggest to “fix this mess”, it’s not about trying to get to .500 and it certaintly isn’t meant to add wins at the expense of development.  It’s not even about making this product more watchable for the fans.  It’s simply about making these guys feel like they have some sort of chance to win on a daily basis.  Ultimately talent plays out and this team will be bad no matter what we do, but if possible let’s have them lose more games 3-5 & 4-6 then these 1-10 blowouts we’ve seeing lately.

    Well said.

    It’s just a matter of time before the chemistry is turns bad with this much losing

    guys lose interest

    That's a good point.

    Makes me wonder if Hahn went too far with this tank stuff. Yeah... yay we might have the #2 pick in the draft next summer. And then all the free agents will laugh and hang up when the Sox call this this winter.

  5. I think Benetti is alright. He sounds like a well trained announcer. But that's a lot of why I always liked Hawk, that he had an actual personality and wasn't your standard boring announcer. Yeah I prefer Hawk, but I knew it would be a drop-off no matter who they brought in. It could have been worse.

    Starting the season with a 4-city trip every year will never happen. Teams won’t go for it.

    Imagine starting 4-8 on the road before the home opener...not happening.

    This is just an unfortunate year. Nothing more, nothing less.

    The reason this wont happen is not because of the potential visiting northern teams. They'd all be for it. Playing on the road isn't that hard where you would normally only win 4 of 12 games.

    What would stop it is the dome and southern teams. As much as it's more playable in their ballparks. They all sell tickets better in the summer and they simply won't give up their summer dates to accommodate northern teams in March or April.

    Do you believe the White Sox are saving the money that they are not spending in 2017 and 2018 and putting it up for 2019?

    Do you believe they shouldn't have signed Luis Robert, because that was $50 million? Did that effect the likelihood of their participation in the next big free agent market?

    If they have an inkling that they might spend $300+ mil on Machado next winter, then yes I think they would take it easy on the bank account leading up to that to better afford it.

    And I love the Luis Robert signing. He's a bigtime prospect. He was billed as a guy that very well could be a top 5 or 10 prospect in short order. And did that affect next year's chances? Well, all the numbers come from the same place. But I've thought all along, they spent the $50 mil, knowing the next year's payroll (2018) would be significantly lower.

    In any event, you aren't going to get a Luis Robert caliber prospect for Kemp's contract. But hey, if you can, then I could accept hurting the chances of signing Machado next year. But it's not happening. The Dodgers are stingy with their prospects. They certainly aren't giving up a haul to remove one contract.

  8. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Feb 2, 2018 -> 12:24 PM)
    Why would this be the case? Payroll would still be low.

    I was replying to the comment that the Sox wouldn't spend any real money until Kemp's contract is off the books - which would be in 2 years. Thus it would mean the Sox aren't players for Machado or others next winter.

  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 2, 2018 -> 12:05 PM)
    A guy like Kemp would be off of the books before we would be spending in any real amount again anyway.

    For starters - it looks to me like he has 2 years left on his deal? So we're conceding that they aren't even trying for a free agent in next year's big free agent class?

    Also, even if it were off the books, the money is still spent. $40 million is still $40 mil. It's going to eventually come out of something. The Sox don't have an infinite amount of money to spend.

  10. If Avi has a breakout season again...say around the allstar break is hitting .300-.310ish, with 15-17 HR's...I think the first thing the Sox should do is explore if he really wants to stay here and if so, will he sign a team friendly contract or not? It's easy for us to sit here and say, nah he wont sign anything team friendly, he's so close to free agency.

    But what if he has a comfort level here and doesn't want to leave? Also, right now they are squibbling over whether he gets 5.7 or 6.7 mil this year. In other words, he's yet to get seriously paid in his career. If the Sox offer him like a 6yr/100mil deal...the lifetime of security might be hard to pass up.

  11. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jan 29, 2018 -> 07:37 AM)
    Didn't have time to check out the article, but how do you pinpoint that their spending doesn't come from a certain area of revenue? There's revenue sharing, ticket sales, network deals, concessions, etc. How can you pinpoint what area the spending is coming from?

    I believe it's that they aren't spending much on player salaries, period. Both teams are dumping large salaries without trying to replace them in any way.

    The purpose of revenue sharing is so small market teams can be competitive with larger market teams for paying player salaries. It's not for the owner's of small market teams to pocket that money, as is seemingly being alleged in these 2 cases.
