Once Grifol is fired, will he go the way of other Sox managers and front office personnel to not get another job in baseball?

WS2023 raises an interesting question.  What is the list of WS managers or FO personnel that were actually in demand after they left the org?  I’m not sure I know.

Ozzie, sort of, for about 6 months before he pissed off half the population of Miami?  Much younger, I’m-okay-with-roids TLR?  Beyond that …..?

A new GM might have cleared house of the training staff, but c'est la vie.

No need.  For the first time JR finally had a training staff that was doing things the way he thought they should be done, and it would’ve taken someone from outside the org a year to learn the organization!  He did think about bringing Branch Rickey in to lead the training staff, but interviewing a dead guy was too much work.

This should be their next stadium.  Noah's Park.  They can dock at several points on the lakefront to pick up fans, then play the game while cruising Lake Michigan.

And we think Eloy gets hurts too often on solid ground!  I’m picturing him trying to play the field in 5 foot swells!

Reading through trades of that era is so depressing. Jason Frasor, Zach Stewart, Myles Jaye (the late) Daniel Webb. Nestor Molina, Jhan Mariñez. It's almost like we had zero ability to scout baseball players to find a guy whose talent wasn't being maximized. Or we could, but had no idea how to develop them.

To think of the time I spent holding up Baseball America's scouting report on Simon Castro with one hand...

If it walks like JR and talks like JR ………

  5. It’s like Poles likes the general idea of having cap space but not actually using it.

Does anyone know if there’s a real time cap space tracker anywhere?  Curious how much they have left because 2 yrs for Hunter, even at $24M per, is not crazy. (specifically the 2 yr part)

A few years ago I wrote JR a letter requesting to be interviewed for the GM job. I thought Hahn was going to get fired. He was fired years later. JR didn't respond to me. Matter of fact he hasn't responded to any of my other letter after that. Its really  a shame  I'm not the GM. Teams are not willing to give a ton of players for Cease. Looks like he's staying with the White Sox. If I was the GM I would try to sign Cease to a long term contract. He's only 28 years old. If this team is ever  going to sign a pitcher to a long term contract Cease should be the one.

Lopez just said that obviously baseball is a game of failure and you aren’t going to get a hit every at bat but he has a great glove, always gives his best effort, and has those mysterious intangibles to improve the team’s culture.

Even he knows he can’t hit.

He clearly graduated from the Pedro Grifol School of Public Speaking

I’ve been a Sox fan since I was 5 years old which was 65 years ago. My father who was born in 1910 was a Sox Sox fan since he was knee high to a grasshopper. My grandfather was there when the Sox  played on Wentworth avenue  before old comiskey was built. That’s generational commitment.  You don’t quit a lifetime commitment because of a Jerry Reinsdorf.

Agree 100%.  But you can be pissed as hell that JR poisoned your lifetime commitment.  Those two things are not mutually exclusive.

Getting revenge by us not ending up with a world class stadium and possibly losing the team?  Again, you guys care more about Jerry losing than the Sox winning.

Think about what that says about how a lot of people feel about this organization.  Think about what is driving those feelings, that they’re that crazy.  It’s THAT bad.

  10. Since “big, modern thinking”, “private funding”, and “Jerry Reinsdorf” typically aren’t used in the same conversation, I’ve been trying figure the motive behind this.

I know zip about estate law, but there’s been a lot of discussion (including from JR himself) about how he does/doesn’t want to pass things on to his kids.  Is there any estate benefits to putting his money into this?

“That’s the competitiveness we need here with the White Sox,” Getz said. “I certainly want to ingrain that mindset in all our players.”

“And the competition is not just going to be based on the tools that you have,” Grifol said. “It’s going to be based on the style of baseball that we want to play. We know we need to hit and we know we need to score more runs and situational hit and all of that, but we also need to play defense and we need to run bases.”

I was wondering about the task ahead of our future GM.

Sick of my own pessimism I ask you fellow posters, ones who know way more than me, about a "best case" scenario for our new GM. What can he do in the near future to get the Sox back to being a .500 team.

Please outline for me what your plan would be if you are the next GM. What moves do you make? And please tell me. Is there any scenario in which the Sox could field a good to great team in 2-3 years? Or will it take 5-10? Talk me off the ledge please and instruct our new GM.

So you thought you’d try OURS instead?!?  Embrace the horror, Greg!
