No link. That's what I heard earlier.
Heard from an insider source or a media source? Thanks!

I liked Maybin especially if you believe that his numbers were the result of a new swing. I know he feels that way and thinks he will have a good year.
Yes, he would have been a lot nicer than Engel as a starting OF if we suffer an injury.
But I agree with your post. The Sox spent a ton of money this offseason so it’s a bit strange to see them cheap out on the bench for a few more million dollars on one year deals, isn’t it?

Manny Mota thinks that Puig is signing with the White Sox FWIW.
Where did you hear this? Linky por favor?!?

Is Mota the same idiot that said the Sox signed Ozuna in December?
Nope, that was the infamous Frank Castillo. Manny Mota is a former Dodgers hitting coach and is very close with Puig.

If we revisited the thread about payroll expectations this year, aren't we still under the $120M which was the Athletic number ? I'm going to guess more than half the people who posted thought it would be higher.
I know it's nitpicking to say I'm unhappy about the lack of late signings but I am. Sure I can understand relying on Mendick and Leury and not trading more prospects but I really think the bullpen could use more help especially a long reliever. Heck you can see what the Red Sox want for Brandon Workman but that seems like a move for a team who is sure they are going to contend or more likely to happen at the deadline if the Red Sox still feel they can contend and it doesn't happen.
I can't help but feel they skimped a little on payroll this year not only in order to see how everything looks at the trade deadline but also to prepare for next year, But it just feels like they are in wait and see mode rather than trying to make the playoffs this year. Perhaps too many young pitchers and pitchers in general coming off injuries to push more chips in. Just seems odd that Hahn has talked about how JR reminds him that he isn't getting any younger but we still didn't make a much larger effort to win this year.
In my mind I am also drawing a correlation between the current payroll and increased spending in IFA and more developmental aspects of the game such as biomechanics or more high speed cameras. I have no knowledge that we have more high speed cameras now then before but I am seeing cameras in some of the spring training photos behind the pitchers.
Maybe this feeling needs its own thread but that's how I feel.
I’m a little surprised. There were some guys like Cameron Maybin ($1.5 mill) and Brad Miller ($2 mill) that could have been signed for next to nothing. It will also be interesting to see what the Brewers signed Brock Holt for. And there are still guys out there who could improve the Sox bench (Puig, Gennett, Dozier).

Ok guys before he signs, place your bets. Where does Puig end up? I’m going to reluctantly say Padres.

Wil Myers

The Padres outfield is pretty full but fathom probably nailed it with the Mariners. Haniger has had two surgeries this offseason and is expected to miss all of Spring Training and the beginning of the season. -

Gennett would still be a fantastic add, but he would probably a better shot at full playing time.
Agreed. I’d still settle for Dozier for some 2B depth but obviously he only plays one position.

I agree. As long as he knows he'll be a mostly bench/platoon guy and hes cheap enough to where we can cut him if he isn't geling with everyone else and causing trouble, I'm ok with it.
I mean, look how much they wasted last year on Jay and Alonso.
34 minutes ago, Chicago White Sox said:Agreed, as long as he’s reasonably cuttable and Abreu has vouched for him I’ll ok with it.
$9 million for Alonso and $4 million for Jay. 🤮
I agree with both of you about Puig but I think Steve Stone will end up being right and he will sign elsewhere.
If it was up to me, I’d sign Puig and either Gennett or Dozier. Great lineup and amazing bench.
Posters who are happy with Leury/Mendick/Engel right now will be wishing we added some bench depth once we have an injury to the infield or outfield.

Scott Merkin was asked by Hub Arkush tonight of the White Sox player’s opinions in camp about the Astros and Merkin said the players haven’t spoken at all about them.
Merkin never mentioned why they haven’t discussed the Astros and Arkush was too clueless to challenge him on it. Hmmm, maybe because Keuchel is now their teammate? It was an embarrassing discussion to say the least.

He would’ve looked so good on the Sox. FUCK
Gennett and Dozier are still available but it seems like the Sox want to roll with Leury and Mendick. Gennett is likely going to be an absolute steal for some team.

Will be interesting to see the contract numbers.

I think it’s funny how people are appalled by the idea of signing Puig but are okay with Engel getting at bats in RF against lefties.
Sign Puig for next to nothing, provide starting OF coverage for your corner outfielders, one of which gets injured a lot, and let him platoon with Mazara in the meantime. If he acts like a dick, cut his ass.

Bruuuce Levine was just on The Score and said that Mazara was 26 years old so his best years could be ahead of him.
How does this guy keep his job?
-
Pillar just got $4 million from the Red Sox. He can play CF but it makes me think Puig should be able to nab a contract worth $5 to $10 million from some team.

He probably thought about it. I wonder what makes a player not pick Boras
Probably the large percentage he takes but it’s probably still worth it for star players.

Yep, I was very confused by all of the optimistic thinking based on this change of agents.

personally it really doesn't bother me but Steve was, like a lot of white boomers, trying to universalize his experience as as white boomer across races and generations. TA basically told him to wake the hell up, in so many words.
White boomers? There are also poor white kids that can’t afford to play baseball.

So now its a 3-team deal with the Sox, Rockies, and A's involved? What a clown.

Guys are going for peanuts. I really hope we add a vet and move Engel and/or Mendick to a depth role.
Indeed. $1.5 million for Maybin and $2 million for Miller. I'd rather have both of them over Engel and Mendick.

If the Sox spend their remaining money on a big acquisition like Puig, I’m fine with going with Leury and Mendick in the infield. Puig is probably the last impact bat available.
