  1. What were the Sox supposed to do with Palka after that season? Cut him?

They never penciled him in for anything.

And one day, we might get some fortune with one of these guys.  Sometimes it does take a while.  See Naylor, who sucked for 5 seasons before he got good.

I don't get it. You let Kopech go 2, but not Wilson? I just want consistent logic from the manager. He was at 7 pitches, he breezed through the prior inning. He is not in any way on a pitch count or coming back from injury. He was ready to go out there and win it.

The 2 was the anomaly.   Usually, everybody gets an inning.   He just doesn't manage to win the game.
Not surprisingly, when he doesn't do his usual and lets Kopech pitch 2, the Sox win.

That my friends was one horrifically managed baseball game.

It's game after game like this.

Each reliever gets his inning.  But don't tire them any, 150 games left to play.

Bryan Shaw - good gracious, he shouldn't have even made the team out of the Spring.

In 1968. the Sox didn't score more than 4 in the first 10 games. Basically, they scored 1 or none. They lost 95 that season and the franchise nearly fell apart.

And they made a bunch of sorry trades after the 1967 season to abet the effort.
And the Miracle Mets will be forever grateful.

  5. Sox are going to be mostly sh$$y until they develop a good farm system.  Yea, the current snapshot of the Sox' prospects is okay today (although I suspect it's more in the 15-20 range), but the farm system and infrastructure are still bottom-quartile.
When Williams took over, yes he inherited well, but the Sox also had a good farm (which he helped to build).  The Sox had a good farm from 1990-2005 (arguably til 2010) and the Sox had a good team most of those years.  But from 1970-1990 and 2006-present, the farm system has been mostly bad, as has been the team on the field (except for a few short pockets of success)
You just can't trade your way to improvement anymore; teams won't give up squat in young talent.

Grifol isn’t good, that’s not even in question. He probably goes home every night and gives Jerry his vitamins to help him stay healthy.

You don't even have to be good to manage most of these situations.  You just have to be not terrible.

A good manager would run roughshod over Getz;  But I would hope that Getz might see some benefit to his own career in a manager who really knows the game.
I always thought the reason that Hahn never hired a good manager is because he didn't want the manager to show him up; I would hope that Getz is more self aware and without those ego issues.

  7. Flexen as has a great 6 innings; but he's Flexen so you've got to be leery about giving him another go-around.  Okay you can send him out in the 7th just to see, but once he gives up that hit, pull him and pocket the good start/low pitch-count premium.  But no, leave him in and then  he gives up a homerun and he still hasn't seen enough and keeps him out there.

The starters have been good this year, so the bullpen really isn't taxed.  Good managers are on top of this kind of thing.

8 strikeouts for Thorpe. I love a good changeup.

It will work if he throws strikes with it and paints corners while the hitters flail away. . But if it’s just going into the dirt, it won’t work in the majors.

I didn’t realize DeJong was primarily a 3B before here,  so Mendick might not make it. Mendick can still cover all three INF spots (like Sosa), plus late game out of players corner OF for limited games, so his flexibility  might still help him make the team.

Who would be your three preferred non catcher reserves?

I’d replace Mendick with Shewmake with this new to me information if Shewmake is healthy.

Also hope Lee, Colas and Sosa come up and play regularly early in the season to assess if they can contribute in the future.

Total Games Played at 3B - All Levels

    Total Games Player (Starts)

    40 Man Roster

    1. 549 Moncada (541)
    2. 276 DeJong (177)
    3. 249 Ramos (248) AA
    4. 115 Lopez (45)
    5. 59 Sosa (52) AAA
    6. 26 Rodriguez (21) AAA
    7. 11 Lee (7) AAA
    8. 3 Maldonado (0)
    9. 2 Vaughn (1)
    10. 2 Shewmake (0)
    11. 1 Sheets (0)

    Remaining NRI Players

    1. 497 Remillard (266)
    2. 132 Mendick (116)
    3. 88 Elko (0)

Ideally, to me, it would be Stassi and Lee, but obviously that's not possible.  I guess they can let Lee play AAA.  But I thought he did a good job last year behind the plate; and his .100 average was probably fluky/sample-size on the bad side.  Not that I expect him to hit well, but I'm not convinced he'll learn much from Charlotte.

As for Mendick, he was terrible last year (of course, most of the players on this team were terrible last year). He's had his shot here; give someone else a chance.

I was surprised Touki was dumped; yea, he had a rough spring, but he's got a lot of control and there is some talent there.  Shaw had a lousy spring too, and yet he apparently will make it.  I'd go with Chavez over Shaw.

Well, this is the first year of the new regime, so it is hard to tell what Getz would do plus Grifol's record last year of prioritizing veterans.

If they open versus Detroit with this roster give or take a guy or two, it is fine and they will have some OK, hopefully good / improving options (Colas or Sosa, maybe Popeye) before the next core group is considered late this year or early next year.

    2024 Opening Day Roster

    Starters (RF TBD):

Maldonado; 1B Vaughan; 2B Lopez; 3B Moncada; SS DeJong; LF Benintendi; CF Robert Junior; DH Jimenez

Reserves C Stassi; INF Mendick; RF/OF Fletcher & Phillips; 1B/DH Sheets

    Rotation: 1 Crochet; 2 Soroka; 3 Fedde; 4 Flexen; 5 Nastrini

Bullpen:  CL Kopech; SU Brebbia; Leasure & Wilson; MR Banks; Hill; Swing: Garcia; Toussaint

Last Out: RP J. Chavez; B. Shaw; 2B/SS B. Shewmake

I have no idea who will make it.
But from what I've seen, Lee should make it over Stassi; Mendick would be ridiculous.  As for Kopech, yes he was good out of the pen in 2021; but he was good as a starter in 2022.  I'm not sure that the the pen is the magic salve.

Throwing a baseball exerts the same strain on an arm regardless of whether one's throwing to AAA or MLB hitters. All throwing in the minors does is preserve an extra year of control. I know this is baby-think, but maybe making Crochet a starter on his request and giving him opening day buys some goodwill, and an extension for a couple of years. Guy's only 24.

Or maybe they are just doing what the prior FO either a)Should have done in the first place; or b)Not draft him in the first round in the first place.

That's why they have all those guys like Keller Toussaint Deivi Garcia etc. stacked up behind...and likely another final addition or two, either FA signings or waiver claims, in the final two weeks.

Crochet and Kopech piggy backing each start is one certainly possibility...or flipping positions as the season goes on to limit Crochet's innings pitched totals.

I was also thinking Tanner Banks, although lefty-lefty wouldn't be ideal.

Banks, despite the AAAA reputation, has been effective pretty much every season he's pitched in pro ball.  He's never had a WHIP above 1.4.  He has 100 pro starts.  Now his FIP was a tad high last year, I guess because he doesn't have high K totals.  And what I like best is that he minimizes the walks.

  13. With each passing hour, the trade feels worse and worse to me.  We really received nothing of note.

That said, I think the Sox will win in the 70s, with the proviso that they won't dump their short-term  pitching in July.  If they do, and they should if they can, then low 60s again.

  14. Just another Getz trade where it seems that we didn't make the other team feel any pain.  They gave up none of their best products. We gave up one of the best pitchers in baseball.  The best prospect they relinquished is the player they just got from the Yankees (a red flag in itself), so there isn't the sense of loss.
And then, of course, the obligatory middle reliever, which I suppose is better than getting a utility infielder.

I suppose the return is okay, but nothing special and disappointing.
