8/13 Reds at Sox 12:10 PM
Tomorrow's starter is TBA right? I assume Sox are going to have to call somebody up to cover that game?

Now, if we learn postgame that Davis got himself tossed via some other kinds of words or deeds besides the pitches, then that's totally on him

Well I've never seen an ejection that bad in my life. I'd like the players to play and see how it goes. At least Jose Quintana was intentionally throwing behind a guy when he got tossed. Very possible Davis was on the verge of letting it blow up in a similar fashion, but we didn't get to see that timeline unfortunately. And if that was going to happen, the ejection hurts the Sox in the long run because we have to wait around even longer to see what Davis looks like in a full-length outing.

If you like the rest of the arms and don't want to demote e.g. Tanner (which I think is worth considering), might have to let him go soon. Maybe even tomorrow? No idea who is going to start. And then you may want to make space for Thorpe to take a stab at claiming the 5th rotation spot going forward.

Well Davis should have been an all-star, that's not an award based on future performance. In fact I would more urgently give the honor to a player who I suspect won't repeat his performance. Also, Davis wasn't looking good today but the umps are the ones who decided this game.

I suppose it's a good thing that nobody came to mind as an obvious choice for "it would make the team better if this reliever got suspended"

For the record, if Sox get a good situation — bases empty, Sox lead, couple outs, reliever about ready to end his outing — I would very much be in favor of sticking one in Stewart's back lol

I can see why the scouting reports were unreasonably negative on his D. They couldn't tell he was getting great jumps on the fly balls but they would see him occasionally misplay the bouncers like that and conclude that he didn't know what he was doing. Of course, I don't know why in the world he allowed that ball to eat him up like that since he didn't seem to think he had any chance to catch it in which case... lay back and make your hop. Should be easy enough to coach up but for whatever reason he hasn't grasped it yet.

Two things: Very clear that Davis wasn't trying to hit Sal. He's missed up and inside on upwards of half the pitches he's thrown in this game. Cannot possibly eject him for that. It's fine for Sal to be pissed off. Part of the deal with these things is if a guy is constantly missing in a place that is putting your livelihood in danger, you can be mad that the guy almost killed you even if he didn't mean to almost kill you. But of course that's no grounds for ejection. If Davis said something in the scrum to get ejected, then okay. But I seriously doubt it.

Insane. Sal Stewart just bullied the umpires into ejecting our starting pitcher

Might as well have him go 2 innings!

Both Danny Farquhar and the tall journeyman starter with the over the top delivery from a couple years ago came over from the Mariners and talked about how they have a fairly rigid philosophy of how to be a good pitcher and if you don't fit the mold, they're not going to do much for you. Hard to criticize their pitching dev but might mean there are a few of their castoffs that you can fix up.

A little small sample size theatre for the crowd... Doyle as a White Sox: .823 OPS, 11.7% K%, 2 SB, 1 TOOTBLAN, 2 DRS

Well, things can change quickly. Boston just dropped a series to the A's. But the thing about changing is there's no guarantee they change for the better!

I was wondering about that too. Made me wonder if Romo is walking wounded too or something. I also wondered if Meidroth would have come in had Quero gotten third with less than two outs, but if that's your strategy you're obviously running the risk that you end up with a play that Quero fails to advance to third but a better runner would have.

Well it's clear the contact quality is not good, but there's plenty of bad hitters who can't even muster that much contact on the kinds of pitches he often swings at. I'd be telling him to let it rip even more so that the tappers turn into whiffs. Or alternately, bat left-handed so the tappers can be infield hits!

The fact that Luisangel strikes out at a well below league average rate still kinda amazes me. If I was a hitting guy I'd be very interested in working with him in a low stakes environment because there are some serious physical gifts in there. But for the Sox right now constantly needing to put him out there against left-handed starters and not getting anything out of it, they can't really wait around for something to click anymore. If they really believe in him, try to pick some time when you think teams aren't paying attention to the waiver wire and see if you can get him to AAA.
