QUOTE (chw42 @ Oct 3, 2013 -> 09:36 PM) It's an unfair trade... If Gonzalez didn't have that monster game last week, it'd be an awful trade. Easy for you to say! I honestly don't know what normal protocol is for vetoing trades as I've never seen it happen outside of the obvious circumstance pointed out earlier

My Jones for Gonzalez trade was vetoed by the league. I've never seen that happen before except in a league where a guy was quitting and trading his guys for nothing to his friends

Shooting at the Capitol
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 3, 2013 -> 04:38 PM) Recently in New York, police shot and killed an unarmed person and wounded two bystanders. Something similar happened either early this year or last year. This is why we need more armed citizens

OBAMA/TRUMPCARE MEGATHREAD
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 2, 2013 -> 07:14 PM) I was thinking vastly improved funding of state schools. At a bare minimum, restoring the huge cuts. Not giving money to Harvard. Of course, you could also give money to people. As far as all that goes though, it was much, much cheaper for me to go to Harvard than UIUC. My parents made almost double the median income of the USA and that was the case. I didn't end up going to Harvard since an undergrad education there is a borderline scam, but the LAC that I ended up attending was always much cheaper. I also love how I had earned a Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship from the federal government...then Robert C. Byrd died and it was mere months before that was defunded. Thanks, I'm glad we can build some more tanks now

QUOTE (chw42 @ Oct 2, 2013 -> 08:55 PM) I voted against that first trade. How did you get the other guy to take Jeffrey for Bernard? One's a starting RB, the other's barely a WR3. He just offered, no negotiation or anything. I think there is some risk in Bernard and some serious upside for Jeffrey, but obviously I thought I was getting the better end in the deal.

I didn't accept 1 trade offer in my entire fantasy baseball season but am 2/2 in football, lol. I assume I'm "winning" these deals because the other party is trading from a position of strength...but that's not my problem

The Democrat Thread
Daniel Radcliffe, talking about how he perfected an American accent, said that he always gave his soldier action figures American accents. You've gotta love how we've become such a neo-imperial power that someone who is British of all things associates soldiers with the USA from childhood

Wimpy won't be a pompous ass who makes just as many mistakes as his partner, though

Hawk is a Ford Frick finalist
I've grown to like Hawk more as time goes on. Please god, fire Steve Stone and get Wimpy back here

OBAMA/TRUMPCARE MEGATHREAD
There are plenty of doctors, but our current system discourages people from becoming primary care physicians. It is well known that fixing our immigration system and the way the medical industry looks at foreign medical training would easily fix this, as there are lots of doctors from across the world that want to be primary care physicians in the USA. We generally treat all foreign medical training as null and void, requiring any doctor that can manage to immigrate here to then go to school for several years to receive American certification. Part of the reason nobody in the USA wants to become a primary care physician is because we don't help people go to college, so they must choose their specialty based almost solely on the most lucrative thing they could possibly be allowed to do since they are forced to take on an ungodly amount of debt to perform such an essential service.

Government Shutdown on the clock thread
The right has taken up the individualism to the extent that if Policy X doesn't directly and immediately affect the speaker in a negative way, then it is acceptable. Things included in "things that affect the speaker in a negative way" are, of course, any expenditures above revenues. Things that don't negatively affect the speaker include catastrophic harm to others that could be avoided by not taking an unreasonable approach to governance and budgeting.

Traded Alshon Jeffery for Giovani Bernard and Tony Gonzalez for Julio Jones This has been a good week. Had absolutely no backup RB and I have MJD as my RB2 (hasn't done s***). I've been looking for a true WR1 to go alongside DeSean Jackson and Jordy Nelson and now I have that. I have nothing (a nothing named Kellen Winslow) at TE this week, but I have Gronk on the bench ready to go in Week 6, hopefully.

There are few broadcasters as iconic and beloved as the Hawk. He should be there.

Jeff Manto fired
There is common practice of taking pitches early in at bats, for no particular reason other than it may lure the pitcher into a walk. Manto's little hypothetical situation was saying that he didn't advocate the approach of taking hittable pitches in situations where a hit was too important.

Range Rover Meets Motorcyles
Yeah, this is a tough one. Obviously the original biker is at fault, though I can imagine that many of the other bikers could have reasonably misinterpreted the situation. Bikers understandably don't take getting hit with cars lightly. Now, that is not to say we should settle our beef by mercilessly beating people, either. A classic "violence begets violence" story here

Hahn:Ventura will return in 2014
Reyes is a better player than Alexei, but Reyes is a huge wildcard with injuries. If I had no shortstop, I might take that gamble...but I have a decent one and no immediate need to dump him and not much to gain from a modest increase in production at SS.
-
Hahn:Ventura will return in 2014
I would say that this is a thing that Hahn will definitely think about doing, but as Marty admits it may be difficult to pull off, even once. The trading team would have a lot more explaining to do than us. Team X will have a hard time justifying trading their high-priced should-have-been-star player AND some top young players for nothing in return except a heavier wallet.
-
Hahn:Ventura will return in 2014
I don't mind the "bad contracts for top prospects" idea in the abstract, though I'm not especially thrilled by any of the ideas so far

2014 Draft class
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 1, 2013 -> 10:41 PM) Good, then they draft Manny Machado with Kenny Lofton like speed. It gets even better. He'll go great with Matt Kemp and Ryan Howard, our selections in 2012

Government Shutdown on the clock thread
QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 1, 2013 -> 11:12 AM) This isn't even as bad as the debt ceiling fight in 2 weeks. It is likely that President Obama will raise the debt ceiling himself and that it is completely legal to do so. Most believe that the Supreme Court would refuse to hear arguments on the matter. It could actually be yet another move that ultimately makes the GOP look horrible if they try to fight back. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 1, 2013 -> 02:14 PM) Just awesome. And 6 minutes apart too. LOL. Great job. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Oct 1, 2013 -> 09:24 PM) I honestly prefer drinking a 12 pack of Sunkist, shifting gears and thinking about how much I hate the government all day. While that thing you're driving on has absolutely nothing to do with the government

Cooper 2 Verducci 0
QUOTE (ptatc @ Oct 1, 2013 -> 06:39 PM) Correct. It kis too difficult to be accurate with the variability of pitches thrown in an inning. You can "ballpark" it but its never going to be reliable. Pitches thrown is better, but even that is not as straightforward as it seems. Back when I pitched, a 35+ pitch inning pretty much meant I was going to be useless for the rest of that start. I always compared it to weightlifting. 10 sets of 10 is not the same as 5 sets of 20 is not the same as 1 set of 100. I think we approach it the right way. We don't ignore the measurable stuff like game by game pitch counts and innings pitched, but there are subjective factors that play a big role as well. The end result is a pretty damn healthy staff and team.

2014 Outfield
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 1, 2013 -> 09:26 AM) While I appreciate your example of the Sox quick turnarounds, I think I have a better, more recent one. The last time the White Sox had a season about this bad was 2007. They won the division in 2008. The Griffey factor.

They should all be back. Even if we bring in a guy like Granderson, I expect the rest to stay.

Government Shutdown on the clock thread
Worth mentioning that it is a near certainty that if we did a simple vote on a CR that left spending unchanged in both houses, it would pass fairly easily. You can look no further than the strange powers granted the Speaker and the silent filibustering powers in the Senate as what is to blame for this.
