  1. David (Lincoln): Steve, if your in Kenny Williams' position what would you do? The key to the Sox success has been their depth and they have a few players coming back from injuries to help further the depth (Hernandez, Marte, Gload). I guess my view is really only to move unless you see something big because the chemistry on the team has been fantastic. Steve Phillips: (12:28 PM ET ) Williams has done a tremendous job. I have so much appreciation for what he has done. He had a vision, put a plan in place, executed and now they are managing it as good as can be. The White Sox should consider either adding complimentary pieces .. middle relief depth, bat off the bench, etc. ... or a significant, All-Star caliber player .. possibly a closer, like Billy Wagner, if he becomes available. To add any other pieces might be risky. But I think they need to do something. Teams that don't make moves because of chemistry have logic for their plan, but players look around and see other teams getting better. If a team doesn't make a move, the teams feels like everyone is catching up. Even a small move makes you feel like you are moving forward. The only other spot that is a ? is 3B. Joe Randa might be a consideration.
  2. Hawkins has pitched very good lately.. He is alot better than Shingo. I wonder who the middle prospect might be
  3. Dave (Baltimore, MD): Steve I think the deal for Burnett is going to get done w/ Baltimore, so why did you keep stating earlier that the Sox were getting him? Steve Phillips: (12:22 PM ET ) I'm surprised the Orioles have interest .. they have previously avoided pitchers who have spent time on the DL in the past, unless they can do a full MRI and exam prior to a deal. Frank Wren, back in the mid 90s, got burned with Xavier Hernandez, without the deal being contingent on a physical. The Orioles tried to void the contract but failed and had to pay him even though he couldn't pitch. The Orioled has interest in Sele one year but he couldn't pass their physical. The Orioles officals I talked to expressed Angelos would have the same feelings about Burnett.
  4. One of the Giants beat writers was on the flagship station and report that the Whitesox&Giants are talking about a Shingo& middle prospect for Latroy Hawkins..
  5. matt (Chicago): Do you think that the white sox are pretenders or contenders and who may be on their wish list for this year? Buster Olney: (11:35 AM ET ) matt: Total contenders. And they should spend big time trying to augment their team before July 31, in preparation for the post-season. Some scouts and execs believe that right now, they're a little like the '01 Mariners -- a great regular season team, owing to their consistency, but a team that can be beat in a short series because of the lack of impact players.
  6. BUSTER: ... in todays local paper it says: ... "The White Sox, Twins and Orioles have been identified as possible landing spots for Lowell. ... Sending Lowell and Burnett to Baltimore is NOT a good fit anymore as the Orioles now decided right-hander Daniel Cabrera was off limits. ... The White Sox put together an attractive package for Burnett and Lowell with Jose Contreras, reliever Damaso Marte and either prospect Brian Anderson or Brandon McCarthy." ... A much better deal for the Marlins. YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT THIS, BUSTER??? Thanks! Buster Olney: (11:30 AM ET ) A White Sox person I know said Saturday he thought they were right in the thick of this... I haven't made calls on the deal this morning, but a Burnett deal does seem imminent, based on all the smoke flying out of South Florida. The Orioles are apparently trying to substitute Hayden Penn for Cabrera, and let's face it, he might be a better option for the Marlins than Contreras, who is up and down. But if they got Brandon McCarthy in the deal, maybe that would sway them. I haven't seen Anderson play, so I can't tell you much about him, other than what I've read...
  7. Bryan (Rockville): Buster...the Baltimore Sun is reporting that the Orioles are close to getting A.J. Burnett and that an announcement could come later today, a couple of days after it was reported he was going to the Red Sox. Where do you see him going and in what deal? Thanks. Buster Olney: (11:12 AM ET ) Bryan: That's what I heard last night, too, that Baltimore was getting close on the deal -- and the Marlins' lost weekend probably accelerated things, because Florida needs a shakeup. I've been ripping the Orioles for weeks about not doing something, so give them credit for pulling the trigger on a deal. Burnett is not great, he's not a sure-thing-absolutely-will-make-an-impact guy, and it may be that the Orioles wind up paying double for him -- absorbing Mike Lowell's contract, trading Hayden Penn, and then giving Burnett a $40 million extension (that's the market value of guys like him now, four years at $10 million per), but at least they're trying to give themselves a shot. Maybe Lowell will be a better fit with the Orioles, playing in the smaller ballpark, rather than cavernous Florida. By the way, I'm not sure where the Red Sox stuff was originally reported, but all weekend, Boston people were saying they weren't in it, so I don't know how much stock I'd put in the notion that they were close...
  8. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 09:34 AM) Bruce Levine is about as accurate as carpet bombing. Thats what ESPN 1000 repored at 10:20 update... Not to sure how accurate Levine is since I only live in Chicago 4 months out of the year

  11. Chicago White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko gets to play against the best player he ever played with -- Tigers rightfielder Magglio Ordonez. "I just know he was a great teammate, and he's the best player I ever played with, period," Konerko told the Daily Herald of Arlington Heights, Ill. Konerko spoke on the eve of Ordonez's first game against the White Sox, which happens tonight when the Tigers visit U.S. Cellular Field. Ordonez spent his whole 14-year career in the Sox organization before signing with the Tigers for $75 million in the off-season. "No offense to anybody I've played with, but when that guy's healthy and playing well, I've never played with anybody better," Konerko said. That statement seems more impressive considering Konerko played with Mike Piazza in Los Angeles and, for the past six years, with Frank Thomas. Ordonez played three games before July because of hernia surgery. He missed any chance to stop Chicago's runaway season in the Central Division. Chicago (61-29) has a 12-game division lead largely because of a 30-5 record in the Central, 7-1 against the Tigers. Four of those wins came in the first month.

  14. When the Sox reactivated Hernandez. Im hoping the Sox trade Shingo
  15. Rumors and Rumblings The destination of Pittsburgh Pirates left-hander Mark Redman before the July 31 non-waiver deadline could depend on if the Florida Marlins trade right-hander A.J. Burnett to the Baltimore Orioles. If the Marlins deal Burnett, then they will likely try to acquire either Redman or Pirates right-hander Josh Fogg to fill the hole in their rotation. If the Orioles fail to land Burnett, they are likely to make a play for Redman. The Pirates hope the Chicago White Sox are interested enough in Redman to trade one of their three outfielders at Class AA Birmingham _ Jerry Owens, Ryan Sweeney and Chris Young.
  16. Heres a Whitesox article that was in SF newpaper thought I would share it Would the real playoff contenders emerge already? The trade deadline is 14 days away, and too many general managers still don't know whether they'll upgrade or downsize. Blame Bud Selig for pushing baseball toward a level playing field. Blame the Yankees for having an off year and allowing ordinary teams to think they have hope. Blame the Padres for not taking better control of a shabby division. At the All-Star break, 22-of-30 teams were no worse than four games below .500, and three of the remaining eight teams belong to the National League West, where public concessions are rare because the Padres are such a fragile first-place team. From June 1 until the break, the Padres went 15-22 -- and actually gained ground in the NL West. The Diamondbacks were 13-25 over the same stretch. The Dodgers and Giants were 14-23. The wild card taints nearly every team's view of itself, misguided in many cases, and AL teams are equally to blame now that the Yankees are vulnerable, coming out of the break for the first time since 1996 without a hold on first place in the AL East. Only the Cardinals and White Sox know how to distance themselves from the pack, leading the Central divisions by 11 1/2 and nine games, respectively, at the break. Since 1933, the year of the first All-Star Game, 26 teams owned at least a nine-game lead at the break, and only two blew it: the 1978 Red Sox and the 1993 Giants (as much as a team that wins 103 games can blow it). Although one team wasted a six-game lead at the break just two years ago, the Cardinals and White Sox shouldn't worry about missing the playoffs in 2005. That team, after all, was the plunging-to-earth Royals, who led the White Sox by six and the Twins, the eventual division champs, by 7 1/2. "I don't think it's possible," Brewers manager Ned Yost said of any team but the Cardinals claiming the NL Central. "They've got too many good players, and they're got too much depth. They're too good. Their coaching, their manager ... they've just got too many things going for them. I don't see it happening." Twins pitcher Johan Santana said of the White Sox, "The way they've played, they've been unbelievable. No one can compare with them right now. But we're doing fine. It's just that they're the best team in baseball right now." The Cardinals have a lineup fit for the AL, led by Albert Pujols (he might finally snag an MVP with Barry Bonds' absence), and their rotation alone has more wins (50, entering the weekend) than the entire staffs of 24 other clubs. Proving their dominance in the NL Central, they're 28-9 against division foes and are on pace for their second straight 100-win season. The future is equally bright for the White Sox, who are gunning for their first pennant since the "Go-Go Sox" of 1959. They own the majors' best record after winning only 83 games last year, and they offer solid pitching (Jon Garland has 13 wins after opening the season as the No. 5 starter) and startling acquisitions (Dustin Hermanson has 22 saves in 23 chances, and A.J. Pierzynski is suddenly not a bad guy). At least these teams know they'll be buyers leading to the trade deadline, if only to better prepare for the postseason. Cardinals GM Walt Jocketty, who annually makes big-time acquisitions in July, wants another outfield bat and left-handed reliever (Billy Wagner would be perfect, but pricey). White Sox GM Kenny Williams is seeking depth in both the rotation and bullpen and remains interested in Jason Schmidt and A.J. Burnett. The Padres, Blue Jays and Orioles are among several teams eyeing Burnett, signifying a seller's market as trade talk heats up. Although Preston Wilson, Bret Boone, Eric Byrnes and Jay Payton were dealt in recent days, trade flurries aren't expected until teams start losing more games or realize they've got little chance for the playoffs. "There is not as much activity as there has been in the past because there aren't many options,'' Williams told the Chicago Sun-Times. "I guess that's unfortunate for teams trying to take their games to another level, but at the same time, it means your competitors will have a difficult time getting better. It's also a problem that's good for baseball that so many teams are in the playoff chase." The AL dominated interleague play, posting 20 more wins than the NL, and the AL's All-Star victory was its eighth straight, securing home-field advantage for the World Series. Good news for the White Sox. As for the Cardinals, manager Tony La Russa was asked to reflect on last year's World Series (a Boston sweep) and what would have happened had his team owned the home-field advantage. "We would've lost in five," he quipped
