Garcia to Philly for Gavin Floyd and Gio Gonzalez
whitesoxfan101 replied to BobDylan's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 11:51 PM) I have said as long as I have been on this site, there are 2 types of pitchers that the sox should draft unless they want to rebuild the cell. Sinkerballers or guys who can K people. Well you got one of each in this trade, for a 30 year old with a worn out arm, 10 million dollars salary next year, and going to be a FA. And short term, we replace him with McCarthy, and probably are going to trade for a starting OF. Those all are clear signs we need to panic because we are turning into the Oakland A's and will have a 10 dollar payroll in 2008. -

The fact that I'm the calm one really makes me nervous about our fanbase as a whole and how much it's overreacting. -

QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 11:46 PM) Even if KW is bluffing, this is terrible press. Especially considering the Cubs are spending so much money, this really looks bad for the Sox (to the non-smart fan who just bases their opinion on what they read in the papers). I don't give a flying f*** about the non smart fan, I want to win. I hate when people worry about terrible press, it's about wins, not press. And we'll never see crowds like 2006 saw again unless we win the World Series and the bandwagoners return, it's just life. -

QUOTE(greg775 @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 11:41 PM) I'm talking about that Trib article saying we're going to let all our starters go in the next 2 years. That ain't being the Marlins? The Trib is just using the trade as anti-Sox propaganda. I would be shocked if Buehrle, McCarthy, or Garland go anywhere. Vasquez depends on a lot on next year, and Contreras is 57 years old. Use your head people, please. -

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 11:41 PM) No, not in the rule 5. I just wouldn't be surprised that if once he's officially a member of the Sox he's shipped out somewhere else for an outfielder. Ok, you nearly sent me into the panic mode the rest of these people are in. Thanks for clarification. -

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 11:38 PM) I'm thinking Gio is gone by tomorrow night. In the Rule 5?? I wouldn't count on us being stupid enough to let that happen. -

QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 11:36 PM) Neal's problem was all mechanics last year. I could have sworn his problem was his only pitch is a 92 MPH fastball that was no longer deceptive after teams had seen it for a couple years. -

I'd also like to ask why anybody would be down on us not getting Rowand in this deal. I'm sure we asked, but it turned out we weren't going to let a deal fall through over a 4th outfielder when we already have one in Podsednik. As sick as some of you are about this trade, I'm far more sick at some of you. I can't believe the overvaluing of Freddy around here. Now if your mad we didn't trade one of your higher valued starters, that's perfectly fine....but if you were expecting some blockbuster deal for Freddy, your simply not paying attention. AS LONG AS we get a legit starting OFer like Baldelli this offseason to go with this, I don't mind the trade at all. And I think the Buehrle extension is imminent after this trade btw, which I don't mind either since he's at lowest possible value right now. -

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 09:44 PM) Well, he just got two solid trading chips in young pitching and saved 10 million bucks. I think that he has something else cooked up. Yeah, exactly. I haven't seen a White Sox offseason get this much hate since the 2004-2005 one. I mean, we were so damn stupid that offseason, KW is obviously clueless and this is another example. In all seriousness, this is a classic case of fans not understanding the value of their own player and overvaluing him. Freddy is a 30 year old pitcher with a ton of mileage, decreasing velocity, and a 10 million dollar salary. What exactly are we going to get for that, Carl Crawford?? However, this organization isn't in the business of prospects, so I would assume that one or both of these guys are going to get launched for an outfielder. -
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 02:21 AM) I think Mack gets dealt this off-season. I still think the Sox will get another starter for the OF, and Cintron/Ozuna can fill in at 3B/SS fine for a backup role. Agreed, Mack simply doesn't fit based on our roster and what he can do.

QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Dec 5, 2006 -> 07:23 PM) Looks like maybe Troy Pollard to Yep, he's in the fold as well. This month is going to be a great one for the Illini, by New Years this will be either a top 10 or borderline top 10 class nationally.

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 02:09 AM) I don't see either lasting past divisional play. Baltimore-New England I could see San Diego making it...I really would be surprised if the Colts won a game. I agree on Indy to be honest, but San Diego is not going to get beat at home. They are unreal, and now with Merriman back, I don't know if they will lose again. -
QUOTE(YASNY @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 01:28 AM) That's ironic. Those of us that do like Ozzie don't have to wait till May to hear all the anti-Ozzie Bulls***. It never ends. I've concluded that people who still like him just don't watch the games, it's the most logical thing I can come up with. But now i'm getting off topic, so yeah, TRADE FOR ROCCO!!!

QUOTE(SnB @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 01:19 AM) don't get your hopes up, you know he's going to say something incredibly stupid soon that will get him in the national media. What social group does he go after next? I say pet owners. Well of course that's true, just the brief glimmer of hope is nice though. I know by May, we'll be back to appendage-ball, Podsednik being hit leadoff everyday against lefties, and people here defending Ozzie as the greatest since he rode the back of one of the best pitching staffs ever (in terms of how they pitched that year) to a title in 2005. I can't wait......

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 01:15 AM) Ozzie actually sounds like a semi-passable manager this offseason (McCarthy aside), it's beginning to frighten me. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ I'm concerned about the long term status of earth, is the end near??
-
The history of baseball might have been altered in terms of the 2006 playoffs had this decision been made LAST offseason when we acquired him. Yes, I would contest his defense cost us half a dozen games last year. And Shoota's comment is 100 percent right, and re-stirred my anti-Ozzie feelings I haven't had since the season ended.

This will be looked at as an epically bad contract in a couple years, although it won't be the only one the Red Sox have on their hands. Stupid.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Dec 5, 2006 -> 07:44 PM) Exactly. And hopefully Romo leads our team to a superbowl win like Brady did. Whoever goes to the Super Bowl from the NFC is going to get ROLLED by the AFC winner. Although it's interesting, I think the AFC Title game will end up being Indy vs. San Diego. Talk about the irresistable force meets the immoveable object, you'd have 2 of the biggest chokers in the history of big football games going head to head in Peyton Manning and Marty Schottenheimer. -

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Dec 5, 2006 -> 07:46 PM) I've been impressed by the Bulls since Nocioni went into the starting lineup though. Him and Deng are providing a nice 1-2 scoring punch for you guys. Well, they are the 2 best players on the team, so it's nice they are both starting and bum ass P.J. Brown has gone away. With the Bulls amazingly easy schedule the next month, they can make some serious ground. If only we had kept J.R. Smith, he'd be a nice guy to start at the 2 (6'6 and can score, very young) with Hinrich at point, and Gordon coming off the bench. But gotta have those character guys only..... -

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Dec 5, 2006 -> 10:09 PM) And UIC absolutely blew out NIU, I was very surprised to see that. Most of our team has the flu, and Rob Judson sucks and is going to get fired after this season. Don't be surprised. And damn Iowa sucks, losing at home even though UNI played like poop. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Dec 5, 2006 -> 11:28 PM) Washington State beats the Zags by 10. UCLA ended up blowing it open in the 2nd half against Gage's Titans. The Zags can't win road games against even moderately good teams, which is why they don't play OOC road games very often. BTW, random....I met Lou Henson at tonights game. I guess Judson and Collins (the 2 coaches) both played for him with the Illini, and he's visiting Illinois, so he checked out the game. Nice guy, and looked surprisingly good for the health issues he's been going through. -
QUOTE(YASNY @ Dec 5, 2006 -> 01:55 AM) Mark had a chance at one point to not sign an extension, become a free agent and bolt to the Cardinals and he didn't do it. I get so tired of this crap. I know if I was a NL player, I'd still be a White Sox fan and I would have sat in the stands with a Sox cap on in the '05 series ... Just like every other Sox fan that could, did. But can't you understand his never ending you know what sucking of the Cardinals gets annoying with some parts of the fanbase, especially when he can bolt after 2007, sucked in 2006, and is STILL doing it? We'll see though, as long as we trade ONE of these guys and get something in return and get B-Mac into the rotation, I'll take it.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Nov 28, 2006 -> 05:22 PM) I too believe that Tim Raines is a first-ballot HOFer. For sure, just make sure to always slide head first.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Dec 5, 2006 -> 01:45 AM) 'Dead Arm' Freddie rated number 3. Apparently, some ML scouts disagree with a lot of Soxtalkers when it comes to Garcia's value. I HOPE we trade Buehrle. He has more value, and I trust Freddy to be a solid pitcher in the long run more than I do Mark. The Buehrle love around here often leads to the Freddy hate, imo. Plus, Mark is just going to sign with his Cardinals (at long last!) after this season anyways, regardless of the rumors we are negotiating a contract with him right now.

QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Dec 4, 2006 -> 04:21 PM) So, Miami is interviewing Mike Leach now and he is said to be the leading candidate. In theory, not a bad idea if they can keep Shannon. Leach running the offense, and Shannon running the defense would be a NIGHTMARE to play against.
