  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 30, 2013 -> 03:04 PM) A good chunk of revenue was also gone this year. Lower ticket prices, lower attendance, and you can bet there will be fewer local advertising dollars as ratings plunged too. And the Sox also saved money this year by dumping 3 contracts mid year.
  2. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Sep 30, 2013 -> 01:57 PM) Trading Santiago weakens your pitching staff to the point where it is no longer a strength. It doesn't make sense. You'd have Sale, Q and then a bunch of guys who may or may not be able to stick in a MLB rotation. Not to mention it kills depth which everyone watching this year should know you need. We lost 60% of our opening day rotation this season. Floyd and Peavy to injury (then Peavy traded) and Axelrod to ineffectiveness. No one should ever go into a season with just two known quantities in the rotation and expect to compete. Saying te pitching would no longer be a strength after a trade is just wrong. They're not highly touted but Bassitt and Snodgress will be starting off at Charlotte next year and both could be legit major league contributors. And if that's not good enough, Beck is on the same path EJ was on this year and we should definitely expect him to be pušing Charlotte by the middle of next year. And that's on top of any signing they might do for depth like Floyd could be.
  3. QUOTE (flavum @ Sep 30, 2013 -> 01:29 PM) We can probably forget about the Sox signing high-profile free agents, including Abreu. The Sox are going to have to make smart trades, smaller free agent signings, and gasp, actually draft and develop some position players. Garcia and Semien look to be a good start at rebuilding the offense, but this is probably going to take a few years to get back to contention. If the white sox don't sign any high profile free agents then were talking about going into next season with a payroll of $60 million or less. Even if you factor in the higher draft slot spending that's a 40% payroll cut. That's borderline embarrassing on its own even before you think about the extra tv dollars.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 30, 2013 -> 10:41 AM) The thing I am amazed about is how quiet everything has been on the sequester for the last however many months. It has barely been mentioned and the economy hasn't even blinked. Every scientist in the country hates you. The number of scientists trying to find jobs overseas is remarkable.
  5. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Sep 30, 2013 -> 10:57 AM) My point is that I think Santiago is overrated by us. Not valueless, but a controllable #4 starter is not going to bring back something exciting. Useful, yes. Trumbo is probably a good fit, realistically, but he's way overrated because of his homers. I think the perceived value of Trumbo is much higher than his actual value, and Santiago isn't enough to get him. Certainly not Trumbo+ He put up a 3.56 era in te Cell in 150 innings and that's with being jerked from the pen to the rotation for 2 years and tiring at the end. For guys with 100+ innings that puts him 64th out of 150+ pitchers. He had a similar ERa to Cole Hamels and slightly worse than Verlander who pitches in an easier ballpark. If he's a teams number 4 starter then they've got a great shot at a World Series because that team has 4 #1-2 starters. He was a solid number 3 this year and that's only because of the bullpen/innings bullplop we do. If he only has te value of a number 4 starter then trading him is crazy because he's already better than that.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 30, 2013 -> 10:15 AM) Of course they missed on on the next Mike Trout too, but hey. Not because of money.
  7. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 30, 2013 -> 10:09 AM) I don't mind Hahn. I certainly don't think you can totally judge him yet, but to totally trust him? I think the jury is still out. This is a huge offseason for him. If the Sox are in the same position next season, while a couple of posters here will be doing cartwheels, if the people over him aren't meddling now, they definitely will be then. If they repeat this mess next year then the heat should hit the coaching staff, but if they're in this boat following 2015 then the GM is going to have some splaining to do. That is, assuming the team isn't contracted after 3 years of this. (Sarcasm)
  8. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 30, 2013 -> 10:12 AM) I for one, am glad the Sox spent money on AJP and Iguchi rather than saving it and signing the next Joe Borchard. It wasn't necessarily the wrong thing to do. Now with the new rules, those days are pretty much done. In fact, I believe JR was a big voice in the new rules. Absolutely. It was silly having the big spending teams just spending everywhere. These new draft and international cost limits are a great legacy and he can be proud of it.
  9. Well, I'm glad I spent 13 days in national parks on last years vacation and hit the beach this year. It's 10 am, where is my cocktail?
  10. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 30, 2013 -> 09:59 AM) A 2.0 fWAR player for the next 4 years compared to a 2.5 fWAR player for the next 3 years? Both can improve, but Trumbo is really the only one of these two who has chance to be a truly impact player. But when you throw in their age and experience it seems the guy under contract for 4 years has much more upside while the 28 year old with a long track record has more downside risk.
  11. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Sep 30, 2013 -> 10:02 AM) My favorite part from the article. Here is where Hahn and KW seem to differ. Whereas KW would spend every dime on the ML club and in fact take money from the International FA/Amateur draft pool of the Club, Hahn allocates a significant portion to them and won't subtract. Now it worked in 2005 and Iguchi/AJ probably were signed with draft/international FA money, I much rather Hahn's approach of less salary for the ML club and more player development. I really trust Hahn. Aren't those numbers entirely set by their draft position and the international caps?
  12. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 30, 2013 -> 09:37 AM) And that's with 11 games as a reliever in his first full year as a starting pitcher. I think you can extend that and make the assumption that, given 7-10 more starts this year, he'd have been around a 2.0 fWAR with the potential to be improve on those numbers. He's going to be 26 next year and is still under team control for 4 years. Trumbo is a below average defender, is going to be 28 next year, is under team control for 3 years. Frankly, I think Santiago for Trumbo would be pretty fair, all things considered. I feel like you made a convincing case about why that would be a weak deal for the white sox, not a fair one.
  13. 1b needs a warm body. Abreu is my top guy. Would accept others like Morales if somehow we miss on Abreu. With every other position on the roster I can at least say who plays it next year, including catcher. The guy we have at those spots might be someone we'd want to improve upon, fine, but right now the only 1b on the roster is Andy Wilkins/Adam Dunn/Jeff Keppinger. And it's time for our last 1b to retire.
  14. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 29, 2013 -> 06:35 PM) They play in two weeks. Mind. Blown. Do the Broncos play anyone decent this year?
  15. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 29, 2013 -> 06:24 PM) Robin was mailing it in. He didn't practice a Paulie going away moment once in spring training.so in other words you have no reasonable reply and you just decided you need to be a douche and bring in another topic. Congrats.
  16. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Sep 29, 2013 -> 06:08 PM) Good, I hope other teams think he has value and think he become an average defensive CF. Let some other team find out if that's true. Alex Rios without the contract or 2011 season.
  17. QUOTE (chw42 @ Sep 29, 2013 -> 04:52 PM) Peyton Manning is just too good. He needs to sit for the 4th quarter.
  18. That Gordon Beckham what are you doing flop.
  19. Am I seeing right that there is a Rays Rangers play-in?
  20. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 29, 2013 -> 04:52 PM) Why even waste your time trading him? Just don't tender him and save yourself the effort if he is that worthless. Just a terrible idea. A completely unfocused silly season for him and he was still a solid hitter.
  21. So do we know the playin game matchups yet? I'm drinking on a beach.
  22. QUOTE (Jake @ Sep 28, 2013 -> 09:23 AM) What a joke. What should Sweum be fired for? For not losing enough? Rizzo and Castro perhaps?
  23. Could Cargo be had for De Aza and Santiago? I'm just not giving up Quintana for a guy owed that much money, but Santiago I'm more flexible on.
  24. QUOTE (oldsox @ Sep 28, 2013 -> 07:44 PM) Pence for 90 large validates my theory that General Managers are stupid. And I like Pence. They must have a printing press somewhere. $600 million extra league wide per year next year sounds pretty close.
