  1. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 01:40 PM) I have a feeling we're going to be big time Furcal players in Free Agency. Furcal and Alexei is slick in the IF. I could see that, I'm not a huge fan of it though. Not at the kind of money he's probably going to want with the fact that he's missing the whole year with an injury. If his contract value comes down from the $13 mil a year the Dodgers were paying him to something around $10 or less for 3-4 years I could buy that, but I really think someone (Detroit?) is going to just dump money on him.
  2. QUOTE (Whitewashed in '05 @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 01:32 PM) I love Griffy, but were basically getting another Swisher for the remainder of the year. Can't play defense and a mediocre bat at this time in his career and we had to give up some guys who can turn out to be good ballplayers. It would be nice to have a good bat on the bench to hit lefties... he still isn't the answer. The only way I believe this turns out a decent deal is if one of our sluggers goes down for any amount of time. I guess the counter-argument I'll make is this. If Konerko can't majorly recover before the end of this year, then right now we're a better team than we were yesterday. Masset wasn't doing anything and hell, with the way Carrasco is pitching, frankly when Liney comes back from the DL we'd be wishing Masset had options left. Getting better for this year cost us $2 million in cash. Losing Richar stings a little because now our middle infield is weaker next year. But if the team has some confidence in Getz, or spends some money to make another SS/2b happen (Uribe is available next year right?) then that is a manageable loss. But...if we're smart about the arbitration deal...and Griffey doesn't retire, then either we've added in another bat for next year or we add in 1-2 draft picks in the late first-early 2nd round. I'd be ok with turning Richar and Masset in to 2 draft picks just on the face of it, let alone any upgrade it does bring the team.
  3. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 01:31 PM) Don't you think he's pretty much earned himself a set-up type role though? I kind of do. The Sox really seem to like him. I think they'll end up using him a lot more than they used Masset. I think they were using Masset pretty well until he started imploding at around the time they tried to increase his usage.
  4. QUOTE (Chi Town Sox @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 01:25 PM) I read online somewhere ( I believe yahoo) that Griffey is 4th in zone rating amongst all Right Fielders this year. Can anyone confirm this? Here's the link to ESPN's stats. Yes, he is #4 in ZR. Amongst RF's. however, he's also among the league leaders in errors for RF's, and the other number, the RF, he's hanging around in the middle of the pack with Brian Giles and others, slightly above JD.
  5. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 12:55 PM) The Dodgers have sixty million doller defenseless outfield in Manny, Pierre and Jones. I can't imagine Kemp won't be seeing regular time still even after this, for both defense and the fact that he's hitting better than either of the money guys.
  6. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 12:48 PM) And Thome would be #2 on that list, so between the two of them they should be able to handle DH. I think it's not going to be very common to see Thome or Griffey sitting for each other.
  7. QUOTE (YASNY @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 12:38 PM) So the Pirates traded Nady, Marte and Bay for a slew of minor leaguers. And they'll trade these guys in 3 years for more more kids. Typical of the Pirates. Well, they at least got a decent haul to build from. If they were to also draft well as well as developing these guys, then they could easily put themselves in a Rays like position in 3 years or so. But those are all big "If"s. Pittsburgh's drafts always seem to completely implode, don't they?
  8. QUOTE (RME JICO @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 12:39 PM) That is what you get for multiple tabs open at the same time. I almost did it twice, posting about the Pirates in the Griffey thread.
  9. QUOTE (RME JICO @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 12:37 PM) So B-Mac and Cunningham for Danks and Griffey. I'll take it. Good morning and welcome to the "Manny to the Dodgers" thread!
  10. QUOTE (JDsDirtySox @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 12:29 PM) The LaRoche Brothers together... thats pretty cool. Still can't believe the Pirates didn't get more. That's not a terrible haul for Bay right there when you add in Hansen as one of the names.
  11. QUOTE (JDsDirtySox @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 12:29 PM) The LaRoche Brothers together... thats pretty cool. Still can't believe the Pirates didn't get more. Can we say that for sure without knowing the $ amounts and without knowing all the names of the prospects? Man the Dodgers have a lot of OF's. I swear there's 4 teams worth of outfielders in the L.A. area right now. Where did the sudden desire of the Dodgers to add salary come from I wonder.
  12. QUOTE (peanut33tillman @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 12:23 PM) The Red Sox traded Manny Ramirez to the Dodgers late Thursday afternoon, SI.com has learned. Jason Bay is headed to Boston as part of the deal, SI.com has learned. WTF? Now I'm just completely lost.
  13. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 12:11 PM) I liked Richar a whole lot, as he showed last season that he could be a good 2B for a team with a bit of power and some OBP. His attitude may be the only thing that holds him back. I was a Richar fan also and still am. We may well regret moving him at some point in the near future, although I'm not really sure what the Reds will do with him because they already have a 2b who seems to be pretty darn good and Richar defensively seemed to never adapt to the SS position in the D-Backs organization. What I don't like about moving Richar is that it sets us up to wind up having to bring back either Uribe or Cabrera next year, because I'm not sure we'd be thrilled with an infield of Fields, Sex-God, Getz, Konerko/Swisher. The team must be pretty happy with what Getz has done this year to make that move. But overall, it's a reasonable risk especially if we can work a draft pick out of the arbitration stuff at the end of the year. Masset was resuming his implosion in the bullpen, and he's being outpitched by Carrasco. Richar might have his stock go down further if he gets hurt again. We turned them in to a guy who can potentially provide some good offensive help if he keeps up the run he's on, gives us a better chance at a playoff run this year, does so at a price of $2 million, probably is a good ticket selling point, and hopefully brings us a sandwich pick at the end of the year. That's an ok gamble, especially if you throw in the draft pick.
  14. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 12:21 PM) Anyone have a link to the full $$$ details of the trade? We split the rest of his salary for this year, and the Reds pay the buyout correct? Assuming Selig approved it yes. Griffey has roughly $4 million remaining for this season and a $4 million buyout (unless you want to pick up his option year). The Reds are paying 1/2 of that $4 million and paying the full buyout.
  15. QUOTE (WCSox @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 11:07 AM) Since they want Bay, it's not surprising that the talks have gone nowhere. I didn't realize that Manny's contract was up this year. But if that's the case, they'll get draft picks for him, no? If Manny stays with the Red Sox, I think they're still likely to pick up his option.
  16. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 12:33 PM) Any idea what Bay's contract situation looks like??? Linkiness
  17. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 11:31 AM) IIRC, Erstad had 17 last year. Oh. Joy.
  18. That rhymes marge, and you know it rhymes, admit it!
  19. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 10:51 AM) I'm going to instead go with the top 3 rounds (you don't know who signs and whether you'll get 1st round picks or 2nd round picks depending on the order of the Type A/Type B FA's). Sox own: 1st 2nd 3rd OC - 2 picks Crede - 1 pick Uribe - Potentially 1 pick Griffey - Potentially 1 to 2 picks (higher probability on 1 and even that is an if). This would give the Sox between 6 & 9 picks within the 1st three rounds depending on how things work out. This assumes at the very least Crede/OC going elsewhere. Well, I'll add in one detail...I think with Richar moving, the odds of this team finding a way to hold on to either O.C., Uribe, or going out and signing a shortstop and thus losing one of those picks have gone up quite a bit. Are people going to really be comfortable going in to next season with a starting infield of Fields, Alexei, Getz, and Konerko?
  20. QUOTE (bschmaranz @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 09:12 AM) Well fooey! If it makes you feel better, he's on a 12 game hitting streak right now. He's batting .318 with a 1.072 OPS since the break. Those numbers I'll take.
  21. QUOTE (bschmaranz @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 09:02 AM) One think to perhaps consider is the fact that he was swinging for the fences trying to get 600. That can screw with your swing and your game in general. I hope we see .900 or something in that neighborhood. He's over the hump and he should hopefully be re-energized now that he's in a pennant race. He hit #600 on June 8. Thanks to the wonders of the internets, I just calculated his numbers from June 9 to the AS break. He hit .177, with that classic .754 OPS, for the month after he hit 600. The only part of his numbers for this season that look good are his post all star break numbers. He's had a 2 week hot streak and there's no way around it. Everything else is low.
  22. The M's have really hurt John in the past. It's really about time for John to show them what's up.
  23. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 08:49 AM) Swisher technically only had one extended hot streak, aside from that he's been absolutely terrible. Griffey has been far more consistent and the only significant slump he had (IIRC) was the one which occurred when he was pressing for #600. I don't think the numbers monthly back you up. They read to me as saying that Griffey's also only had one hot streak and it's just been the last couple weeks. OPS By month: April 768 May .696 June .795 July .921 (While he put up a .795 OPS in June, he also only hit .205 that month). Pre all star, Griffey put up a pretty consistent .235, .348, .400, .748 plus or minus about 50 points of OPS. This month is currently the outlier. Let's hope he keeps up the 900 OPS the rest of the season, but I'm still concerned.
  24. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 08:46 AM) I have questions as to how Griffey will handle CF, but having Anderson as a defensive backup should work out well. Griffey is a significant upgrade offensively over Konerko & SWISHER. Note that I include Swisher in the equation as I personally have no problem moving Swisher and staying with Konerko (this is if the Konerko is in fact 100% healthy). On this season, I'm really not sure about Griffey being a huge upgrade over Swisher. Griffey's numbers are only slighly above Swisher's when you factor in ballpark factor, and a decent chunk of that can probably be explained by "Which player is hot right now". We're talking an OPS+ of 104 for Griffey and 98 for Swisher, and Griffey's been hot while Swisher's been cold for the past 2 weeks.
