Trade Uribe to BAL - sign Corey Patterson
Balta1701 replied to knightni's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
Corey Patterson only makes this team worse. Jerry Owens would put up a significantly higher OBP than Patterson, and Patterson put up an OPS in Uribe territory last year, so his slugging doesn't make up for it. Owens would be a better stolen base threat also. And even if you don't like Owens...fine, give me the significantly better offense of Swisher in CF and Quentin in LF. I would put Patterson 5th on my Whitesox OF depth chart right now. -
sox working on extensions for both Jenks and Cabrera

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jan 26, 2008 -> 06:35 PM) Which would be absolutely unnecessary and ridiculous. Pay him as little as possible with as little committment as necessary possible. If you're reading these 2 posts, and you're one of the people who think Bobby's arm just won't last another 4-5 years, then you should absolutely agree with GP here. -

It sounds like the media types are really going after Bill on his Jesse Jackson remarks. This could either help in that any press is good press, or it could hurt, since it gives the media a real chance to absolutely jump all over him. They're jumping, now we see what it does. -

The Dems have beaten the Republican turnout numbers, and managed to turn out over 500,000 voters in South Carolina, breaking their old record by over 200,000 votes. Obama is now about to pass Huckabee + McCain combined, Clinton beat all the Republicans except McCain. BO with about a 28% win, more than doubling Hillary's numbers. -

QUOTE(The Beast @ Jan 26, 2008 -> 05:53 PM) What would the Sox pay Jenks in terms of an extension? It depends on the years. Clearly the Sox would be trying to buy out his arbitration years and maybe a year of FA, but they'd certainly be wanting a discount in exchange for giving him the money certainty. With Bobby's background, I think he'd be of the sort where this deal would make sense for both sides, the Sox get to lock up a closer for several years and Bobby gets enough money for his family to live comfortably no matter what. But you have to think something like Joe Nathan's contract's yearly values would be where the Sox would like to go (something like $6-7 million a year for several years if he gives up a year of FA). -

410,000 votes in with 86% reporting...looks like the Dems may well win the South Carolina turnout. I wonder if that's happened since the 60's. -

QUOTE(knightni @ Jan 26, 2008 -> 05:41 PM) I'd rather have Ramirez there next year than a 35/36 year old Cabrera. That depends on what I can get from Ramirez. Let's put it this way, would you rather have Uribe there for the next 3 years or Cabrera? Now, assume that Ramirez produces roughly at Uribe's level. Would you still want Ramirez? How much above Uribe's level does he need to produce before you switch to him? If he comes out and shines, fine, wonderful. If he's average, ok. But if he's in Uribe territory, then that's a pretty big weak link. -

QUOTE(knightni @ Jan 26, 2008 -> 05:31 PM) 10 mil a year is too much for him. Not in this market. And if an extra $2 million a year is the difference between us having Ramirez/Ozuna at SS next year and having Cabrera...well, Ramirez would have to be better than a backup for that to make sense. -

Obama's lead pushes back up to 28%, now doubling Hillary again, it would be really nice to hit 30. 270,000 votes with 55% counted. Obama just passed McCain also. -

35% counted and 185,000 Dem votes. The Dem record in S.C. is 290,000. They look on pace to SHATTER that number. The Republican turnout was 442,000 in their side. -

only 25% of districts counted, but over 135,000 Dem votes already counted. They were talking a turnout of maybe 300,000. The number might dwarf that. -

If the media wanted to really go after the Clintons for "playing the race card", which you know they'll want to do...here's the official blue ribbon video of that happening. Bill gets asked a question not remotely relating to race, or even South Carolina. Bill's immediate response..."Jesse Jackson won South Carolina twice". -

QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Jan 26, 2008 -> 04:55 PM) Rasmussen tracking poll has the national difference down to 3 or four points between Clinton and Obama. As I said before Iowa, attacking Obama backfires. I took a look at that tracking poll, but as far as I can tell that's just the 1 day data, which is bound to have some very extreme errors/swings in it. I don't buy it until it becomes a trend. -

Obama's exit poll lead was seemingly large enough that the networks have gone ahead and called the state for him simply based on those. Sigh of relief. -

The Final S.C. polls before the election had Obama up anywhere from 15 to as little as 3 in a recent Survey USA poll. Exit poll reuslts seem interesting on people's attitudes on how this campaign went. Interesting that nearly 50% of Clinton voters thought she went after Obama unfairly. -

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 26, 2008 -> 03:16 PM) After seeing what Furcal got a year ago, that might be low. That was 2 years ago actually, but with some mitigating circumstances. Furcal was 28 at the time I believe, Cabrera will be 34 if he hits the FA market. Furcal wanted to go about 5/$50 or so, but the Dodgers got him to take a shorter deal by upping the yearly dollars. Might be a bit low, but you certainly have to take the age in to account, especially if you're offering to extend him before he even plays an at bat with your team. -
Yankees appear ready to extend Cano. 4/$30 is the proposed base, with a couple option years that could take it up to 6/$56.

I think this probably covers what, 75% of what's wrong with this country's economy in one article. Lost $10 billion? Oh, I'm sure it wasn't your fault. It's not like some punk 27 year old grad student out in CA was smart enough to see that there was a big house of cards being built on unreasonable expansion of credit while you couldn't. Here, try again.
