QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 28, 2008 -> 07:27 AM) I get the feeling if this fighting lasts, or worse yet spreads, you will see a lot more coverage again. Yeah. I happen to know that journalists from some major papers have been given notice to saddle up and prepare to go.

QUOTE(DrunkBomber @ Mar 27, 2008 -> 09:06 PM) Youre probably right. Nobody has talked about this guy at all. Out of all the people to be an apologist for I honestly dont get it? What are you talking about? I assume the "nobody has talked about this guy at all" thing is sarcasm, but, my point was, most people have gotten over it one way or another. They made their judgement, and life goes on. They decided its irrelevant, or decided it makes them think less of Obama, or whatever. Therefore, most people don't care anymore. And despite your protestations otherwise, I have seen no one here be an apologist for Rev Wright.

Obama calling for raising the Cap Gains tax

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Mar 27, 2008 -> 08:46 PM) Doesn't capital gains hit those who invest in real estate. Nothing like helping out the crippled real estate market. Good question - I had thought this was only on non-residence real estate. I don't think you pay cap gains on homes you live in. -
QUOTE(mr_genius @ Mar 27, 2008 -> 07:22 PM) Michigan and Florida votes did not count, text book disenfranchisement. If they try to discredit Penn, Indiana, ect. Thats just more disenfranchisement. The system states a certain number of delegates must be reached to win the nomination, so what I am suggesting goes along with the system set up by the Democrats. Remember, every vote must count. In the current primary system, there is never and more than a fraction of the voters who really have a say. This year, its better than most. Add in the superdelegates, and, its really just a sampling system for the party to use as a tool. That being the case, let's be done with it. And as I said, you want to re-do the system, I'm all for it. Get rid of the supers, rotate states in some fashion, so on and so forth. Then and only then would all the votes count.
-
QUOTE(mr_genius @ Mar 27, 2008 -> 05:59 PM) But northsidesox72, shouldn't all the voters have their voices heard? Florida and Michigan have already been disenfranchised, should Pennsylvania suffer the same fate? Like I said, this long primary season is already more democratic than most. You want to reform the system, great. But at this point, I wouldn't call it much of a disenfranchisement.
-
Calls are growing louder from within the Dem party for this thing to end, and soon. I am thinking more and more we'll have a groundswell of supers endorsing Obama, and this thing might even end before the PA primary.

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Mar 27, 2008 -> 04:47 PM) Oh this is even better. Oney, was a crappy player in college also. He played for North Park which isnt that good. He hit .227 in 2006, with a .293 OBP, and he slugged (LOL) .253. WOW. He had 26 Errors with a .882 fielding percentage. I think Carrie is better Yikes. I'm fairly sure there are members of this board that could do better than that. -
QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Mar 27, 2008 -> 04:36 PM) WTF It's snowing again. When will this winter end?!?!? Correction - its THUNDER snowing.

QUOTE(BigEdWalsh @ Mar 27, 2008 -> 04:03 PM) Wow. With all the negativity I've read on here all winter and spring I can't believe I'm the only one going wins 70-73 wins, though I can imagine even worse. I've got a real bad feeling about this year and I so hope I'm wrong. Maybe it's just that I'm totally miffed that Uribe is still on this team. Defensively the Sox are pretty darn good. Offensively pretty darn below average. I foresee a lot of those homers and not much else type games. Pitching....ugh. Contreras, Floyd and Danks scare the crap out of me although they probably don't have that effect on the rest of the AL. As for the bullpen, nothing but a bunch of question marks and ho-hums aside from Jenks. On the bolded... do you have those reversed? Because I'd say the opposite on each. -

QUOTE(BearSox @ Mar 27, 2008 -> 03:38 PM) 74-77... a little better then last year, but not a whole lot. Our rotation is significantly worse, and while our bullpen looks improved, which I think it is, you never know. Our offense is better, but by how much? Swisher is a good OBP guy with some pop and such, and is surely and upgrade, but he is no world beater. I really like Quentin and Ramirez, but how much playing time will they get? Anderson, we'll see... if he ever plays. Crede I'm not expecting anything out of, and Uribe will be his usual s***ty self. Plus, once Owens is back he's gonna play, and he is complete garbage. I'm expecting a real bad first half, but I hope in the 2nd half we can finally get our youth in there, and hopefully all of Contreras, Crede, Uribe, and Dye preform good enough so we can actually get something out of them. Perhaps Dotel can be possible trade bait at the deadline as well. My hope is that on August 1st, Quentin will be in RF, Anderson in CF (Owens sent down/benched), Swisher in LF, Richar and Ramirez platooning at 2B, and Fields at 3B. Egbert and Broadway should both get their chances, as well as maybe even Poreda quickly escalating. Just imagine if we selected Joba over that piece of s*** McCulloch back in 06... Is referring to McCulloch as a "piece of s***" really necessary? -

QUOTE(heirdog @ Mar 27, 2008 -> 03:38 PM) Well, either Massett is going on the 15-day DL with a forearm contusion or Wasserman is going on the 60-day DL with a "wisdom tooth pull." Anyone know how Wasserman looked in the minor league game this morning prior to getting his wisdom tooth pulled? Huh? I thought Wassermann was scheduled to pitch in the game today. And I assume the wisdom tooth pull is a joke, right? -
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 27, 2008 -> 03:31 PM) I'm pretty sure that the Electoral college can only be reformed by constitutional amendment. That part, yes. I was referring to legislation regarding the primaries. Sorry. I just sort of threw in the electoral college as a similar issue.
-
I am not sure about the law on this, but its possible that legislation at the national level may override the states. Even if not, the national parties could find a way to force the states' hand. Should be interesting. Anything to make the primary system more dynamic and involve more states over time, and anything to get away from the electoral college for presidential voting, are good things.

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Mar 27, 2008 -> 03:23 PM) Gameday must be a bit behind. Masset's control slipped (even more than usual) after a line drive hit him off the forearm. He already gave up a 2R HR to Jackson before being replaced by Thornton. Matt Thornton having a nice spring, though. -

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 27, 2008 -> 03:20 PM) Has Nick settled down any more these last couple innings? Well, he gave up 2 more runs in the 5th, only got 1 out. But some errors may have contributed, by the look of it. -

QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Mar 27, 2008 -> 02:59 PM) Sen. OBAMA: No, no, no, absolutely. And that's why I think that it may be, for example, that you could structure something in which people with certain incomes were exempted from this increase and it would stay at 15. Incomes are not the key factor for cap gains taxes. They are basically unrelated. And in fact, for the few people in low income brackets who do invest, THEY won't notice the differential change in their bottom line. Its the bigger investors that will take notice, and shift their money. -

QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Mar 27, 2008 -> 02:53 PM) So you think large scale investors will stop investing? I somehow doubt that. Not stop, no - that's not the point. Its a matter of where they put their money. This is something that has been shown to be the case repeatedly. If the cap gains tax is higher, those people will find other investment vehicles, where the resulting economic positives won't translate as directly to the US economy's good. -

QUOTE(lostfan @ Mar 27, 2008 -> 02:51 PM) I don't know why you're surprised that a Democrat would want to raise taxes for the rich (people with significant capital gains usually = rich people) after a 2-term Republican administration. That is pretty much a concrete thing and will never change. Plus Obama said like a year ago he'd raise taxes. As for the timing in the crappy economy, that's another thing. But I'm convinced none of the candidates really know much of anything about how to manage the economy anyway. Raising the top marginal income rate a bit is fine. Closing loopholes for own-money traders is fine. Decimating the markets by doubling the cap gains tax across the board is not fine. -

Obama calling for raising the Cap Gains tax
NorthSideSox72 replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in The Filibuster
Not going to help much. You need to have the institutional money in the markets, and you need the large scale investors putting cash in. Like I said, there are smart ways to close some loopholes and get things right. This is just not smart.
