2012-2013 Sox off season Catch-All thread
NorthSideSox72 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
If the rumor posted in FS is true (Shirek to Korea), then the 40-man just went back down by one. -
Seems like an odd move. He was added to the 40-man roster, which he'd have to think meant he had a decent shot of seeing the majors this year. Well, good luck Charlie! 40-man goes down by 1 if this is true.

Sox draft IF Angel Sanchez - 2012 Rule V Draft Thread

QUOTE (CyAcosta41 @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 11:05 AM) No risk here, and adds a potentially nice option to the utility infielder competition. Sanchez has been around for a few years and has put up respectable offensive numbers for a utility infielder. MUCH more importantly, he's long been considered a very good fielder at SS (his primary position), but also at 2B and 3B. I think somewhere along the line, many miss that the most important part of the utility infielder role should be good (or better than good) defense, plus versatility at the SS, 2B, and 3B positions (bonus points awarded if the utility player can also fill-in, if needed, at 1B, the OF, or even at C). Strong defense first is especially important for a team trying to maximize its potential via a strong overall pitching staff. Sanchez's major league offensive stats aren't embarrassing at all, unlike some of the utility players we've trotted out there in recent years. While I liked a guy like Lillibridge because of his hustle and elf/hobbit vibe, he's exactly what we don't need as a utility player. Other than for his magical, lightning-in-a-bottle 2011 power explosion, his major league offensive performance has been putrid. But, again, given the defense first priority of the role, the Stealth Elf was a poor major league defensive infielder, with his only "defensive cred" coming in the OF (for some incredible plays that he made taking advantage of his athletic gifts, but overall he wasn't a trained/skilled OF'er and we're talking about utility INFIELDER anyway). I like adding a guy like this to the mix. He's arguably better than any utility infield candidate we currently have in the system (I certainly don't want to mess with Carlos Sanchez's growth by using him as a major league utility infielder). If Angel Sanchez emerges as the best candidate for 2013 utility infielder -- great; if someone else does, then he's offered back to the Angels and we either lose him or gain additional organizational depth. No risk whatsoever. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 01:15 PM) Whoopie...............29 yr old SoxTalk in a nutshell, right here, in 2 posts. -
White Sox winter meetings thread...

If the Sox can get something of value for Morel, they should leap at the chance. -
BOS took Jon Bachanov in the Rule V, so he's gone.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 04:18 PM) Or dude's tired of being a backup and knew once A-Roid got back he'd have a part-time gig? The talentless White Sox roster = playing time. The way it stands now, one could argue the Sox roster has more talent than what the Yankees will open 2013 with. Jeter and A-Rod are both out. EDIT: Would be more accurate to say... talentless 3B depth chart in the Sox organization.

QUOTE (3E8 @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 02:21 PM) They are, but not typically when the positions in question are 2B/3B. The positions share many of the same skills needed to be successful. There are differences, more range helpful at 2B, better arm helpful at 3B, etc. Orlando Hudson was a pretty severe drop defensively from 2B to 3B.

QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 02:03 PM) DKnobler @DKnobler With 3B settled, White Sox feel free to look at trade market. Hoping to make a splash Yes yes yes. This makes a lot of sense. They've now set their baseline roster, and can start wheeling and dealing to improve it. Should be fun to watch. -
QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 12:57 PM) BREAKING: @scottmerkin Sox still have interest in Hannahan despite confirmed Keppinger deal Interesting. Could mean a platoon... or could mean there is(are) some other trade(s) brewing involving Beckham.
-
QUOTE (GoGoSox2k2 @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 12:46 PM) i know Bill James' numbers are not the end all be all, however where did the talk come from that Keppinger was a liability on defense? I am not doubting or agreeing just wondering You should always be somewhat skeptical of defensive metrics, though for skill IF positions they are not too bad. The real problem is the sample size - 50 games isn't enough. A full season is shaky even. So I wouldn't put a ton of stock into it.

QUOTE (Sockin @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 12:46 PM) 3 yrs, about 12 mil. https://twitter.com/Ken_Rosenthal/status/276396840881106944 That's at the top of what I'd want to see, but liveable. Certainly could have been worse, in terms of who the Sox got and for what money. If he can be close to his 2012 performance for a year or two, it is a bargain. And his ability to play 2B does leave some flexibility for the Sox to do trades or other moves if opportunities come up.
-
Just pure speculation... I wonder of the Sox plan to trade Beckham, and maybe Floyd or another pitcher, to get a 3B? And play Keppinger at 2b?
-
Could be good, depends on the money. If he is making more than about $4M per (slightly above what Beckham will get in 2013), then I think we are overpaying. Would also have preferred a 2 year deal. I just don't think he is likely to sustain those numbers from last year. Definitely better than Morel, or Hannahan, or pushing Sanchez too fast and at a non-native position.

'12 payroll was higher than reported, more room available?
NorthSideSox72 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 12:01 PM) The reason is that if Danks comes back strong (there is no reason to expect otherwise) you have a surplus of starting pitchers with a weak offense. If you deal from strength he is the most likely trade candidate. The Sox just need to hope that Sale and Q have no adverse effects of the huge increase in workload last year. I would think, as long as there aren't any mechanical issues, there is a good chance that guys like Sale and Q will actually do better in 2012, rather than worse - now that they are stretched out innings-wise. Is that not typically the case? -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 10:35 AM) More at link... http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/news/artic...ws&c_id=cws $90M plus say $7M for Beckham and De Aza is $97M. If the payroll is at least that much, that leaves at least $10M of head room. And if you can trade Floyd for Salty or the like, and get a few more million, that should be more than enough to get Youk or AJ or maybe both. If they want to. -

QUOTE (Baron @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 10:23 AM) If only that were true Only Youk and Keppinger are guys I'd say are probably better offensively. But Beckham would be better defensively than either one. And Beckham doesn't have the health risks of Youk. Nor does he make as much money as either would get. Also, I could see Beckham improving even just a bit, and be as good as Keppinger with the bat. I don't think the market is full of better options than Beckham. Two guys maybe, the rest, Beckham would be better. -
So what type of 3rd baseman do we need?

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 10:31 AM) How many bench spots will they have though? If Chavez and Morel are both on the team, what are they going to do with the bench? Neither guy can play 2B or SS. Backup catcher, Backup OF, Morel/Chavez and another UT INF? If they don't resign Youk, they should sign Chavez and Keppinger and have a true platoon. If they can't afford that, they should just pack it in and start dealing veterans anyways. Morel has been said previously to be able to handle SS pretty well. But he hasn't done it much lately, so he'd be rusty. Not sure about 2B. -

QUOTE (balfanman @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 08:22 AM) The more I think about this situation, I think that I'd rather let AJP walk and bring Youkilis back at 3b. Absolutely. The fall of from what AJP is likely to do in 2013 vs Flowers, is much smaller than Youk vs Morel. -
