QUOTE (Heads22 @ May 14, 2008 -> 08:15 PM) I'm home for the summer because I thought I would have a job here. Instead, I'm doing cheap slave labor. Ames was always fun in the summertime. I did basically what FlaJim said - worked 2 or 3 jobs to save money for the year, went out with friends and blew it all on booze and food. Good stuff. Well, except for the summer of '93 - the hundred year flood. That summer sucked.

Is it really so hard for people to park in one spot? Sometimes, I miss having an old beater car that I didn't care about. I used to squeeze in next to the asshole who thinks his porsche needs two spaces, right up next to it, when I had a car I didn't care about. That was always fun.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 15, 2008 -> 06:43 AM) Anymore interested? If we are going to do this by ourselves we need 25-30 people for the softball portion of our festivities. I think we are in the 15 range. Don't be shy. Prove your manly worth to all of Soxtalkdom. Well, in fairness, I don't think Steff, Soxy, QP, Melissa or others of the fairer sex really want to prove their manly worth. But we'd still love for them to show up too!!!

AJ did his job in the 2-spot last night - a hit and 2 walks. Not bad.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ May 14, 2008 -> 09:23 PM) a LOT of people use the word sweetie or dear or sugar. He's just trying to get a rise out of you. You know, all liberals are the same. This is the same crap as when McCain mislabels something, or whatever. Blah blah blah. If we are going to make a big issue of things this small, then no one will ever be a decent candidate.

QUOTE (bighurt4life @ May 15, 2008 -> 02:47 AM) nobody else mentioned it yet but Brandon Allen hit for the cycle today Mentioned in the first post of the thread. Then again just above yours, indirectly.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 14, 2008 -> 08:02 PM) Which of course says a lot more about the rest of the team than it does about AJ's ability to be a good leadoff hitter. .356 ain't terrible. Its not spectacular either, but its more than a Sox leadoff hitter has put up for a number of years now.

What the hell is going on in Chicago?!?!?!?

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ May 14, 2008 -> 08:20 PM) West side? South side? Southeast side? Suburbs? I'm guessing Kenilworth. Gotta look out for those hoodlums. -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 14, 2008 -> 05:49 PM) well the difference is that outfield hits generally travel a bit further And stay in the air longer. But I heard chicks dig infield hits.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 14, 2008 -> 07:37 PM) My reaction to this? Half the people were pissed at our leadoff spot the last 2 years because we didn't have any OBP there since Pods was always hurt. Half the people are pissed at our leadoff spot this year because we have no speed there. Therefore, you put AJ, and his low OBP and low speed there, and that should in theory make everyone unhappy! His OBP is second highest on the team.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ May 14, 2008 -> 05:15 PM) He wouldn't be getting many infield hits I wouldn't think I really can't see the difference between infield hits and outfield hits. All the same to me.

QUOTE (joesaiditstrue @ May 14, 2008 -> 04:00 PM) it was me who posted this in another thread, and it was mostly laughed away, i even explained every single hitter's position in the lineup too then someone else comes along and posts it and everyone thinks it's a great idea lol edit: here's my post on the idea of AJ leading off http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?sh...p;#entry1637091 Glad you found it - I think its a solid idea.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 14, 2008 -> 03:22 PM) So Tom Brady said that ESPN is like MTV in that MTV used to show music videos and ESPN used to show highlights but that it's pretty much all about the drama and craziness now a days. That's why he's fav. Did MTV start only showing videos made in the northeast?

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 14, 2008 -> 02:30 PM) That's the first thing I thought when I read this... let's get the AJP who used to hit .300 with doubles and didn't worry about power. It could force him to become the better AJP again. My point was, look at his performance this year - he already IS the better AJ again. Being the leadoff spot would just reinforce it, as has been alluded to.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 14, 2008 -> 03:30 PM) He could testify the truth, have it revealed and have his legacy tarnished. I'm not sure where you have been, but, I believe that train left the station a long time ago.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ May 14, 2008 -> 03:05 PM) Shelby is currently in high A ball, it'll be at least a year before he sees Charlotte. Oh, duh. I was confusing him with Cook. Not sure why. Yes, you're right, at best he sees B-Ham later this year. Nevermind.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ May 14, 2008 -> 12:13 PM) Probably not. Last time this happened we all thought Richardson would endorse Obama while Obama was in NM and it didnt happen. Update to story: "How about an Obama-Edwards meeting in, say, Grand Rapids?" INTERESTING! I still think it is much ado about nothing. The update has now been removed. STOP TOYING WITH ME! lol QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ May 14, 2008 -> 01:19 PM) i wet myself. ok, seriously, things like this tend to get blown out of proportion. A few weeks back there was a "leaked" story that several predominate Clinton supporters were flipping... it was just 2 regular voters and some minor superdelegate or something like that. I'll believe it when I see it. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ May 14, 2008 -> 01:52 PM) No mention of this by major cable news outlets. I grow skeptical. Funny note: Marc Ambinder links to Time's Blog saying Edwards is the endorsement, but Time's Blog links to Marc Ambinder saying there is a big endorsement. Apparently the rest of the news media is out of the loop. lol QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ May 14, 2008 -> 02:03 PM) Update: Radio silence from six senior Obama officials when asked directly by The Page: “Is John Edwards endorsing Barack Obama today?” Holy Crap! QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ May 14, 2008 -> 02:10 PM) Quick Hit: If Edwards endorsed Obama, could we argue his "popular votes" should be transfered to Obama if nothing more than on a symbolic level? Dude. Seriously. You are wetting yourself over this (your words)? And is it a subject that really needs a bazillion posts? Don't get me wrong, I think its definitely something worth monitoring. But please, take it back a few notches.

Someone made some posts earlier, which of course I can't find now, about the idea of AJ leading off. Seems like a crazy idea at first, but, give this some thought. I'm starting to think its not a bad idea. Here's why... AJ has the 2nd highest OBP on the team, and the highest average. He's now hitting the ball to all fields, and, amazingly, taking some pitches and extending counts. He's also far and away the team leader in doubles, which is fantastic for a leadoff guy. He's no speed demon, but honestly, he's faster than half the lineup as it stands right now (his weight loss seems to have helped), and he's not afraid to take some chances on the paths. Plus he has fewer strikeouts than any starter on the team. I'm honestly having a hard time finding a reason why it would be bad, other than his lack of speed. Can anyone else give me another real reason?

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ May 14, 2008 -> 02:35 PM) I agree that Shelby could be a very good player, but to be considered top 25 in all of baseball, you have to be young for your league, or if average for your league, have simply ridiculous numbers. If you are old, you have to be an elite oversees talent like Ichiro or Dice-K. Shelby might be a top 100 guy after this year, but too old for top 25. If he gets promoted to Charlotte this year, and hammers the ball there too, then he's a successful 23-year-old at AAA with sick numbers. I think that makes it possible. But we'll see - he'd have to continue to be in fire in AA and do the same in AAA this year.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ May 14, 2008 -> 11:36 AM) Ok, I am not sure if we should start a new thread on this, but I'd like some VP talk. CQPolitics has an interesting take on John Edwards and the VP: Here's the case for picking Edwards: He's already been tested on the national stage and not likely to cause a distracting scandal. He appeals to the same working class white voters that back Clinton. He favors Obama's new brand of politics. He could put North Carolina and possibly other Southern states in play. Clinton would probably support him. With more than 1,700 delegates in Clinton's pocket, Obama needs to at least get her tacit approval if he wants to have a unified party. I have been mulling Obama's VP possibilities for a while now and I really have no direction. i really like Richardson, but I dont think it gives Obama a needed boost. But, i would be satisfied with him. He also brings lots of needed experience. The next option would be a "working class" guy who can connect on behalf of Obama with the blue-collar folks. I dont know a lot of the "qualified" people who might fit that, but Edwards is an interesting choice. Would he take it, I have no idea. I dont think Obama would take Edwards to put a state in play like NC, but he would pick him as #2 says- "He appeals to the same working class white voters that back Clinton. " Getting 7% of the vote in WV is an interesting note. I think Edwards and Richardson both offer Obama a boost in communities he has a hard time with. They are also both seasoned, which helps. Edwards also has the advantage of being more charismatic than Richardson. But, Edwards would be seen as a repeat of 2004, and Richardson brings foreign policy and energy experience to the table. I think you might see both in the new administration, somewhere. But Richardson is a better Veep choice, IMO.

QUOTE (lostfan @ May 14, 2008 -> 11:03 AM) Isn't it a different country they give the losing SB shirts to every year? Yeah that too. Just made me think of similar examples. I remember during the first Gulf war, some of the surrendering Iraqi soldiers had on Super Bowl t-shirts for the losing teams.

QUOTE (lostfan @ May 14, 2008 -> 10:56 AM) So what you're saying is we should give Hillary tattoos to kids in Africa? When I was in Haiti, I remember seeing a kid with a beat up batter-man style Sox shirt walking down the street. He probably had no idea what it meant. Also saw a woman who had to be 80 years old, trundling down the road, with a shirt that said "HOT MAMA" on it.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 14, 2008 -> 10:47 AM) Attention Hillary supporters! Get a free Hillary tattoo!! Getting a Hillary Clinton tattoo today would be like getting a tattoo of your wife's name while you were in divorce proceedings.

Final results from West Virginia: Clinton: 239,062 (66%) Obama: 91,652 (26%) Clinton wins by 40. She'll net about 12 delegates. Only about 200 to go, Hillary.
