  1. QUOTE(Texsox @ Dec 14, 2006 -> 12:02 AM) If we are going to add sex appeal into this then where is the love for Olivia Newton-John? Let's Get Physical Or Kate Smith??
  2. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Dec 13, 2006 -> 10:03 PM) HAHA... exactly. wait, you seriously don't like that album? Jimmy Olson's Blues is one of my favorite guilty pleasure songs. anyone see the movie "the Final Countdown"? loved it. I actually chimed in here before as a fan of Kryptonite (maybe the last Guilty Pleasure thread?), and LosMediasBlancos I think it was ripped me mercilessly for it. I compared them, generally, to the Black Crowes and he was aghast. I still do a solo acoustic Two Princes when I play out. Which pretty much tells you how motivated I am to actually update the repertoire. And also maybe tells you why I don't get calls to playy out much any more. . .
  3. QUOTE(BobDylan @ Dec 13, 2006 -> 09:32 PM) Would the genre "winners" ultimately face the other genre winners? And when you say aquire the song, you mean so us users can actually listen to it? This is all fine and well but I know what's going to happen. The organizers are going to spend all this time getting the whole thing together. Then when it comes time to actually vote, Cyndi Lauper is just going to PM everybody on the board to tell them to vote for her and she'll win and it will just make a big joke out of the whole thing and pizz everybody off.
  4. QUOTE(NUKE @ Dec 13, 2006 -> 08:23 PM) More like a devastating body blow to those who feel that coddling terrorists and bending over back asswards for people who want to kill us will somehow make them be nice to us. incorrect.
  5. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Dec 13, 2006 -> 07:50 PM) Victory for BushCo, yes. And another devastating body blow to America's image as the former champion of human rights and dignity. I shoulda been Kofi's speech writer.

  7. In the "putting the pieces together" department. . . Remember the odd request of King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia a couple weeks ago that Cheney be his lapdog and fly on over to see him? Apparently the meeting was used by Abdullah convey the message that the Saudis would provide financial backing to Iraqi Sunnis in any war against Iraq’s Shiites if the United States pulls its troops out of Iraq. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/13/world/mi...amp;oref=slogin This is another reason for BushCo to wait until January to announce it's new Iraq policy direction - put time between the release of the ISG report and the decision to ignore much of it, and also try to figure out how deal with a cheesed off Saudi Arabia and a potentially chaotic region-wide conflict if the Saudis throw in with the Iraqi Sunnis to counter Iran's support for Iraq’s Shiites. Maybe this is also why the Saudi ambassador to the US is resigning?
  8. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Dec 12, 2006 -> 11:41 PM) I see. I got banned for a similar joke once Not. Long. Enough.
  9. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Dec 12, 2006 -> 11:00 PM) Ultimately, it's nearly impossible to find "the right answer". . .. and telling folks that tofu turns you gay and shrinks your package isn't it.
  10. Ah, OK I see it was an online identity scam you fell for. When I first read the thread title, I thought to myself, uh-oh Tex didn't remember what I told him about always checking for an adam's apple before picking up a woman at a bar. Seriously, it stinks that The Internets are chock-full of con men and scammers and bank tellers from Pennsylvania, but what can ya do?
  11. QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Dec 12, 2006 -> 05:35 PM) Rumor is my department will not be getting Christmas bonuses for the first time ever. However, nobody is being told. It's been 5 or 6 years since we've seen Christmas bonuses. And friggin' 3 years since we've even seen merit salary increases. And they still haven't given a straight answer whether I have a job come January – first my group was axed, then we were told we "must have misunderstood" (can you say backpedal?). Now I've been urged to hurry up and interview for a new position within the organization (which I did), so maybe we didn't misunderstand so much afterall. . . AAARRRGHHHH!!!
  12. QUOTE(BigEdWalsh @ Dec 12, 2006 -> 11:43 AM) Janis Joplin/Big Brother and the Holding Company; "Piece of my Heart" & "Ball and Chain" Lydia Pense/Cold Blood: "You Got Me Hummin'" Gayle McCormick/Smith: "Baby It's You" and the best ever...Arlene Smith/The Chantels: "Maybe" Edit. How could I forget Sandy Denny/Fairport Convention? Pick any song, maybe "Matty Groves". She was also the only guest singer Led Zeppelin ever recruited ("The Battle of Evermore"). Yes, Sandy was awesome. Died way too young. Amd actually, just like a lot of Richard Thompson's best stuff is post-Fairport, I think I like the Fotheringray and non-Fairport Denny stuff better than the Fairport stuff. I'm biased, though, because I jumped into Fairport midstream and after Richard had moved on, mostly to see what Dave Pegg was doing when he wasn't playing bass for Tull. And speaking of Tull/Fairport/Steeleye Span and such, Maddy Prior is another of the amazing famale folk-rock vocalists nobody knows about but should.
  13. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Dec 12, 2006 -> 12:28 PM) Ironically: My windows based mp3 player DESTROYS the ipod.... hmm. fixed
  14. QUOTE(Texsox @ Dec 12, 2006 -> 12:17 PM) http://www.computerworld.com/action/articl...;intsrc=hm_list December 11, 2006 (Computerworld) -- Longtime Windows development chief James Allchin wrote in a January 2004 e-mail to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and company co-founder Bill Gates that the software vendor had "lost sight" of customers' needs and said he would buy a Mac if he wasn't working for Microsoft. Charities

QUOTE(Texsox @ Dec 12, 2006 -> 09:53 AM) It's the time of year when many people think about giving to the various charities. Here is a nice reference tool to help check out those who ask for your money. http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm Boy Scouts of America Boy Scouts of America Boy Scouts of America Boy Scouts of America Was that too subtle? Charity Navigator is indeed a great resource. Trent Stamp is Da Man!
  16. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Dec 12, 2006 -> 10:38 AM) Alanis Morrisette - Thank U She'd go on my guilty pleasure list. I like Jagged Little Pill and the follow-up album qute a bit – even if radio did it's best to kill them.
  17. QUOTE(mreye @ Dec 12, 2006 -> 11:12 AM) I've got the album. I think we've had this thread before. I have: New Kids on the Block Greatest Hits Tiffany's Greatest Hits Corey Hart Greatest Hits Barry Manilow Box Set
  18. QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Dec 12, 2006 -> 07:25 AM) I don't know how much I believe you. Bah. Time stood still while that kid picked his seat. And I'm certain the prizes lost were all that and much, much more. Seriously, I agree the Bozo prize packages were pretty underwhelming, even to me as a kif back then. But then abain there was always the chance they'd toss in a Slinky or some Silly Putty or maybe a deck of Marshall Brodine TV Magic Cards, so that was big time by my 9-year-old way of thinking.
  19. QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Dec 12, 2006 -> 01:02 AM) Scotch No guilt there. Unless, by "Scotch" you actually meant "Scotts" and by "Scotts" you actually meant them:
  20. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Dec 11, 2006 -> 08:48 PM) Call me crazy, but I don't mind talking to select groups of telemarketers. I just got a call from my previous health care provider (I just changed jobs) and I didn't care about spending 5 minutes on the phone answering questions. I continued doing what I was doing and was very polite, I even made the woman laugh and I think brightened her otherwise dismal telemarketing life. (because of people like the jackasses that I know will respond to this thread negatively ) thoughts? Now when they call me, instead of cursing them out and hanging up I will give them YOUR number.
  21. QUOTE(bmags @ Dec 12, 2006 -> 12:36 AM) oh man, patti smith too Indeed. oh man oh man, what about Carole King?? Carole circa Tapestry was as good as it gets. Call off the contest. QUOTE(Middle Buffalo @ Dec 12, 2006 -> 12:39 AM) Rapture is a terrible song. HELL you say! 'Cause the man from Mars stopped eatin' cars and eatin' bars and now he only eats guitars. GET UP! Maybe it's just the keen social relevence of the song that scares you?
  22. QUOTE(Texsox @ Dec 11, 2006 -> 11:18 PM) Of course we have to add Madonna - ?? Blondie - Call Me The Pretenders - Brass In Pocket Madonna's a tough one to pick a song for because she's invented herself so many times over the years. For Chrissie and the Pretenders – off the first album, I'd rather see Stop Your Sobbing selected as the competition song over Brass In Pocket. I'd prefer several off of Learning to Crawl as well - Chain Gang, City Was Gone, or Middle ofr the Road maybe? Even though it was the breakthrough hit for them, Brass In Pocket always left me cold compared to other Pretenders tracks. For Blondie, Call Me, Heart of Glass or Rapture can do I guess. I was never the biggest fan, but Pat Benetar obviously needs to be in the mix. Heartbreaker or Hit Me with Your Best Shot are the big charters I liked. Some of the other hits (eg, Hell is For Children) always grated on me. What about Missing Persons?? Is Dale Bozzio going to make the cut, and what song? Words? Walking in LA?
  23. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Dec 11, 2006 -> 09:39 PM) because, Dr Love, "any one else got some to add to the list?" Aimee Mann is great in her own right, but not on my top 10 list. Your list sµcks ass. Just saying.
  24. How did Aimee mann not make the cut?!? Boo!! Back in the day, the Chrissie Hynde did it for me. I also likes me some Shonen Knife when I'm in the mood for Japanese pop-punk-bubblegum. Cherish the Ladies is one of my favorite Irish traditional groups.
