  1. QUOTE(Texsox @ Nov 27, 2006 -> 11:29 PM) Let's pee in the corner, Let's pee in the spotlight. To be fair though, Michael Stipe is one hell of a mumbler.
  2. I'm reserving my seat now. I'll get a pic of you and me together. And then I'll tell everybody about the time I met Al Borland. Or Randy Hickey. I Kid because I Care® Actually, I'm completely changing my approach to the SoxTalk elections. I need to see pics of everybody to see who is the best celebrity lookalike, and I'll cast my vote based on how much I like/dislik the people y'all look like. Ah, Democracy is a beautiful thing!
  3. QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Nov 24, 2006 -> 06:15 PM) I hear it had something to do with the love that dare not speak its name, you know... Kevin Federline. What love is that? Rex Kicka**'s love of Bea Arthur I'm guessing.
  4. Hooray for LogCabinRepublican, er. . . LowerCaseRepublican!! Happy Happy!
  5. QUOTE(Soxy @ Nov 27, 2006 -> 02:33 PM) The association in this 200-home subdivision 270 miles southwest of Denver has sent a letter to her saying that residents were offended by the sign and the board "will not allow signs, flags etc. that can be considered divisive." Hmm can't any decoration promoting a Christian-themed holiday be considered "divisive"?? Methinks the homeowners Association opened up a big can of worms on this one.
  6. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Nov 27, 2006 -> 02:07 PM) whatever, I'm forever immortalized as calling Albert Camus a Moron.... Exactly. Yet, this is how you thank me?!?
  7. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Nov 27, 2006 -> 12:00 PM) I met FlasoxxJim once... ZIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing? Very nice.
  8. QUOTE(knightni @ Nov 27, 2006 -> 12:14 PM) Actually.. "kissing that guy" would have him on the left, PA. Maybe I'm a Log Cabin Soxtalker.
  9. QUOTE(knightni @ Nov 27, 2006 -> 11:13 AM) Isn't it, "revved up like a deuce"? Well. . . that would make more sense, then. So . . . nevemin d. Ah, well. Excuse me while I kiss this guy.
  10. Good thread. I know a bit more about the Springsteen tune, but have always had me theories about the Dan tune as well. Rex is right about the song being chock full of references to Spreengsteen's youth, asbury Park, caricatures of peopel he knew etc. The first album project he tried to pitch to Columbia was passed on because the songs were not up to radio play par, according to the execs. Spirit in the Night and Blinded by the ight were Bruce's attampts at radio-frienfly rock. Manfred Mann took liberties with the lyrics throughout, the most obvious instance being his turning "cut loose like a deuce" into "wrapped up like a deuce." Maybe it's the family gambling genes, but i always thought cut loose like a deuce referred to throwing away bad cards in a hand of poker. But I have been told that is incorrect and "Deuce" here is slang for a hotrod, ala' the Beach Boys "Little Deuce Coup". As for Deacon Blues, I love the song and it fits well with Lagan's homages to the down-and-out of the night (a recurring theme along with his cowboy homage songs). The Crimson Tide reference is obvious as Alabama footbal was a powerhouse when Aja came out. Most likely (I've been told yes and no), "Deacon Blue" is juxtaposed reference to the Wake Forest Deacon Demons who lost as many games as Alabama won is a really lyrical (and at the time topical) reference to names 'for the winners and the losers.' f**an has talked about Becker's astute interpretation of the line – that Mssrs. f**en and Becker thought the Alabama football team was a bunch of hicks but still they got this great larger-than-life name, "Crimson Tide." The idea for the song was to give the loser in the song an equally great larger-than-life title – "Deacon Blue." The song is about a jazz or blues musician/junkie/alcoholic who has found comfort of sorts in a world most people would find undesirable. Again, the "gentleman loser" is really common and recurring territory for Dan. Midnight Cruiser, Kid Charlamagne, Do It Again, Haitian Divorce, Bad Sneakers, With A Gun, Don't Take Me Alive. . . songs about the seedy side. Again, the gambler family gene (thankfully, recessive in me) digs the dual-meaning of "drink scotch whiskey all night long and die behind the wheel" - that the referecnce could as easily mean dying at the roulette table (or using that as a life metaphor) as it could be literally being killed in a car wreck. Good stuff.
  11. QUOTE(DePloderer @ Nov 26, 2006 -> 04:47 PM) OK, this is the reason I've not been around for a while. My son wants a base for christmas, so I've made loads of visits to local guitar shops and have got him a lovely red Fender Squire Jazz Base. But while I was there I couldn't help but get drawn towards the racks of electric guitars. What you need to know is that I was in a band as a youth, we were called Eddy Hernia and the Surgical Tweezers, we were HOT, we rocked in all the school halls around Leeds! Unfortunatly, when we were first married, christmas arrived and I had no money for presents for the wife, so I sold my lovely sunburst Ibanez and the wife had a lovely christmas. I've regreted it ever since. Now I've always dreamt of a Fender Strat, but could never afford one. But now I can, I am pleased to announce that I am now the prowd owner of a beautiful Black/White American Series Fender Stratacaster. She is called Sally because since getting it I have had it in my hands all the time and my wife is forever asking me if I am going to put her down ( or lay her down----Sally-----Black and White---- Clapton? Get it? ). I have practised 4 to 5 hours a day since I got it and am starting to remember how to play. This time around though I have booked a dozen lessons starting next Wednesday so maybe one day I'll be able to play well. Well enough for my living room anyway. So that is why I've been absent for a while, I hope you all understand. I'm jealous. Between the family and the job and the other job and the wife who thinks I need to spend more time with the family on top of that I'm lucky if I can pick up the guitar for 4 to 5 hours in a month! My once-formidable fret hand callouses have turned into soft puffy marshmallows! As to Rock's comments about the Fender acoustics, I don't entirely disagree they can leave something to be desired. But I still think they are decent starter guitars for someone serious about getting serious. I had one of the old Fender California acoustic models (Catalina, spruce top, mahogany back and sides, made in Japan but great sound fro around $250) and I loved it. I've not really loved any more recent fender acoustics I've played since that one, but I've found them to be servicable by and large. And the new California acoustic series they introduced last year is intriguing (not played one yet) but they're out of the $300 or so price range.
  12. QUOTE(mr_genius @ Nov 25, 2006 -> 02:32 PM) dude, don't be a pussy. get somethin like this Those First Act custom series guitares are actually really solid. The Rick in that image is a but much, but the Elliot Easton model is really nice. Only having familiarity with the cheaper line you see in Wal-Mart I never appreciated that the pro and custom models are prety nice until I went to theie factory store in Boston and played around with a couple of them. As for the guitar to get, I agree with the Fender or Yamaha, solid top if you can afford it. And go acoustic, it will styrengthen your finger muscles and make an electric that much easier.
  13. QUOTE(rangercal @ Nov 21, 2006 -> 11:52 PM) wtf That's "Little Superstar" Baby!! The "kid" is a midget actor form the Tamil region of India and his stage name (Rajinikanth) translates to English as "The Frog" I found the name of the film taht was taken from (Adisiya Piraivi) and it's on my Christmas wish list because that guy is hypnotically creepy. Then there's jane Skinner and the Top Cock.
  14. QUOTE(Brian @ Nov 21, 2006 -> 08:27 PM) He made some of the most boring movies I have seen, Nashville/Dr. T, but also made some great ones, MASH/The Player. Add Short Cuts and Gosford Park to the A list. I liked Nashville and The Long Goodbye quite a bit. Kansas City and Jimmy Dean were decent enough. And visually at least I'll even give Popeye some credit (did I just admit that?!?) Haven't seen Prarie Home Companion yet. Robert Altman
  15. QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Nov 21, 2006 -> 09:08 PM) I've had deep friend turkey, but have never done it myself. The first time I had it was in 1998 or 1999. The White Sox came to Birmingham for an exhibition game before the season and one of the Sox players (can't remember which one) hired this guy from South Alabama to come up and cook turkeys for the team. They were by far the best turkey I ever had. Fortunately, I was able to sneak some out of the clubhouse before the game, because the players absolutely destroyed it after the game. I am cooking a turkey myself for the first time ever this year. Going to do the brine and then add a herb butter mixture underneath the skin. I'm confident it will turn out well, but we shall see. Anybody ever cooked a turkey in the oven upside down? Your brine turkey is going to rock, Rex. And the compound butter rub is the way to go. Don't skimp on the rosemary! Never did upside down turkey, but I have done the turkey in a brown paper bag trick (to keep it from getting too brown on the top) with good results.

  17. Love the fried turkey. Love the trad turkey. Way love the brined and smoked turkey ala Alton Brown that we did the last two years. Last year we even did a Christmas goose that way. This year, we're camping for T-Day, so it will just be a Butterball breast slow-roasted over coals.
  18. QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Nov 21, 2006 -> 05:36 PM) 39 whales a year is a sustainable harvest of one of the few natural resources that Iceland has available to it to feed its population. Come on now. Iceland?!! ICE!?? Send them some blue raspberry syrup and they can all live off of Sno Cones for the rest of their lives!
  19. I trust Soxy will have the education issues covered, so I'd like to see the environment covered by the candidates. Here's my "essay" question, followed by several other teasers that I'd like the candidates to consider. Prior to the GWB admministration, conservation issues were not decided along partisan lines. The presidencies of Teddy Roosevelt, FDR, and JFK all witnessed great waves of conservation and environmental stewardship in this country. It was Richard Nixon who declared that the 1970s to be the "environmental decade," brought the EPA into existence and and approved laws to protect this country's air, water, and endangered species. The GWB administration, in contrast, has worked hard at rolling back environmental regulations, politicizing the scientific process in regards to the environment, and has essentially cut the EPA and environmental scientists at NASA, NOAA, and elsewhere off at the knees. What are your specific plans for putting the country back on a positive conservation path? What Bush era environmental rollbacks, if any, will you and Congress address during your presidency? What will be your strategic priorities in terms of protecting our environment? Teasers - take 'em. leave 'em, modifry them at will: 1) How much of a threat do you think global warming is? How do you propose to address it? 2) What is your position on GMOs? 3) Will the US under your leadership sign onto the Convention on Biological Diversity, or will we continue to side with the likes of Iraq in our own litte Axis of Environmental Evil? 4) What is your position on ANWR drilling? 5) How would you approach the need to balance free trade and corporate profits versus protecting the intelectual property of sovereign nations from the threat of "biopiracy" as western industrial entities continue to exploit global biological and genetic diversity?
  20. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Nov 21, 2006 -> 03:56 PM) baleen or sperm? If this is a legitimate question (rather than a bad joke), the answer is baleen, almost certainly minke. Iceland is planning on taking 38 of them this year as they resume whaling to the dismay of the rest of the world outside of japan and Norway. Japanese "scientific" whaling has also legally taken fin and sei whales, and has illegally taken humpback and even blue whales according to DNA recon done on whalemeat products purchased at market. As far as I know only a few indiginous peoples hunt toothed whales. The Faroe islanders (an oceanic atoll between Iceland and Scotland) still take pilot whales on a sustencence scale, and some North American Inuit tribes take beluga. There's 100 ice-trapped beluga being taken by an Inuit village at this moment, as a matter of fact.
  21. QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Nov 21, 2006 -> 02:17 AM) I ate whale last weekend. NOOOOOO!!!!! o o You wound me to the quick, Rex. I thought you were going to set those barbaric Icelnders right, not join them in their evil ways. May King Triton have mercy on your soul. :

  23. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Nov 21, 2006 -> 12:05 PM) believe it or not..I'm not up on who's gay and who's not I get it - don't ask tell. Don't worry, PA, I won't ask.
  24. QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Nov 21, 2006 -> 12:18 AM) Good to know you'd taser me. And you think you're gonna get votes! I gotta file this away for when I start to Swiftboat the hell out of everybody running next week. Question: would you be more likely or less likely to vote for Mr. PA if you knew he favored tasering of liberals on college campuses?
  25. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Nov 21, 2006 -> 12:36 AM) I don't intend to call you out here -- because I'm pulling this from memory and may be wrong -- but didn't you heavily criticize Guillen when he labeled Mariotti a "f.ag?" The two issues are fairly alike. Atleast Guillen only mentioned his word once, and avoided examples to illustrate his point. Ozzie's no Lenny Bruce either.
