In 2001 and 2002, there was nothing left by this time of the season, except to catch a glimpse of some of the callups in action and to hope for something better next year.
The Sox sure did sputter for 3 months, and sure we're only in a race by virtue of geography. But I will take where we are now entering the second week of September 100 times out of 100 times, compared to being out of it by August yet again.
the 1977 campaign remains among my fondest childhood memories, even though we were well out of it by this time that year. It would be SOOO great to be the storybook team that wins it all, warts and all (and we have lots of warts as a team for sure). If you can't take a breath and enjoy the possibility that this could still be the year, then you have outgrown the need to be a fan, to root, live and die with YOUR team. I hope I never get that wise or that jaded.
It would certainly be a lot easier to be a Yankees fan where you statistically have nearly a 50% chance of a WS ring in any given year. But where's the challenge in that?
Go Sox!
