  1. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 21, 2016 -> 03:58 PM)
    I was just thinking about why Hahn gets SO MUCH credit for the Eaton, Sale, Q and Abreu (this isn't as good, starting next year) contracts.

    Why do we have the assumption that nobody else could have done the same? That you have to have a law or business degree to pull it off?

    Then I thought about the Indians and looked at their payroll. Still well under $100 million, despite the Swisher/Bourn/C.Johnson debacles.

    Carlos Santana 5 years/$21 million 2017 option

    Michael Brantley 4 years/$25 million 2018 option

    Jason Kipnis 6 years/$52.5 million 2020 option

    Corey Kluber 5 years/$38.5 million 2020/21 options

    Carlos Carrasco 4 years/$22 million 2019/20 options

    Johnny Gomes 6 years/$23 million 2020/21 options

    Tomlin 2 years/$5.5 million 2018 option

    That's not even considering future extensions for Lindor, Jose Ramirez, Salazar (top five pitcher in the AL now) and possibly Trevor Bauer, if he's not traded.

    That's what is called a young core, and all locked up under favorable contract conditions. You can quibble about Brantley's injury history, and Gomes also hasn't gotten back to his 2014 form, but WOW.

    It's actually kind of depressing...just when we thought the Royals were leaving the scene, you have the Indians now (last year at this time, it was the Twins with Buxton/Sano/Berrios on the way, things can and certainly do change in baseball, Sox fans know that all too well in 2016.)

    At any rate, I think this idea of Hahn pulling off "miracle extensions" is a bit ridiculous. These deals have been in place since the mid 90's Cleveland Indians teams. Other small market teams like the Rays/Twins/A's have followed suit, as the only way to survive and keep their core intact an additional year or two.

    Finally, there's one last point. I don't have the statistical evidence in front of me, but I think there's a niche to be found signing young Latin American talent (outside of the draft) and then giving them early extensions...because it's more money than anyone in their village has ever seen in ten lifetimes. American-born players might be likely to turn these moves down (see Rodon/Boras) because they're 100% certain they will make even more in the future.

    You can certainly see this motivation with Jose Quintana and his comments upon signing his extension.

    Alexei Ramirez, his original deal was one of the great bargain basement signings in Sox history. KW signed it.

    Or Salvador Perez, five years and $7 million for the second best catcher in baseball after Posey. A contract so "one-sided/unfair," the Royals ripped it up and gave him a new extension before they even had to.

    If this is actually the ONE area where Rick Hahn is good/great at, and nothing else...then I don't see why every other GM in baseball isn't capable of accomplishing the same thing???

    I'd argue if he was the "best in the art of making the deal" (Trumpism), he'd be able to get Carlos Rodon/Boras to sign an extension. Does anyone believe he's capable of doing that? I don't think so!

    This doesn't belong in the Rick Hahn thread that already exists?

    Went to the beach and the downtown area; enjoyed the local food and brews. The weather wasn't the greatest, so the beach wasn't an option for a couple days, so we drove up to Holland to go to Founder's Brewery, and also to Kalamazoo for Bell's Brewery (loved that place). I think the only day the weather was decent was the day we were driving home.

    Yeah, sucks the weather is so unpredictable there. Did you happen to go to Silver Beach Pizza?

    My wife and I are bringing her parents there for the first time in a couple of weeks. It's weird how touristy it has gotten in the last 5-10 years. Growing up there it was just like any other small town. It is nice though that wineries and breweries are popping up all over the place.

  3. Sucks to see him go. He meant a lot to everyone in our community in SW MI. He raised his family in Berrien Springs, which is about 10-15 minutes from my hometown of Stevensville. One of my favorite memories was when I was a cashier in high school and Ali and his wife come through my checkout line. Him and his wife were the nicest people imaginable. I ran into them about 5 times in everyday situations in my younger years and they would talk to anyone and everyone every time.

  4. Last Friday morning the lines at DIA were the longest I had ever seen, but it moved fast. Probably was only about 45 min-hour total. There was literally no wait to go through security at the San Fran airport on Monday night.

  5. QUOTE (smalls2598 @ Jun 3, 2016 -> 10:35 AM)
    I'm looking for a beachy area in Wisconsin that I can go with my wife and 2 year old. Last year we went to St. Joseph, MI, and we enjoyed it, and are looking for something similar. Suggestions?

    Crazy, my hometown is the adjoining town to St. Joe. Parents went to St. Joseph High School and recently moved back there. What did you do during your stay?

  6. I received a letter in the mail from Chase informing me they are closing a credit card account of mine due to inactivity and that there's nothing that I can do about it. Have any of you had this happen? It doesn't bother me aside from the negative hit to my credit score.

  7. What I have noticed from my friends and coworkers, surprisingly, is that the ones with little or no student loan debt are the ones that are welcomed into their parents houses throughout their 20's. The ones with loads of student debt have been thrown out onto their own to make it. It's like the families that were wealthy enough to pay for their children's college still baby them after college, but the ones that weren't able to have been tougher on their kids.

  8. I can totally understand people living with their parents initially after graduating high school or college. I didn't have a job lined up when I graduated college so the plan was to live with my parents until I found something and saved a little money. I'm from a really small town and ended up being bored to death. After about a month I moved to Denver, where my sister lived at the time, and took a sales job at a car dealership to pay for my living. Hated that and ended up leaving about 6 month later. Waited tables at Red Lobster until I finally started using my degree about 2 years after I graduated. If my parents had lived in a more urban area I definitely would have stayed with them so I wasn't constantly struggling to pay my bills. To be honest though, I appreciate what I have so much more now than I'm sure a lot of my friends that lived with their parents throughout most of their 20's. I wouldn't consider myself extremely frugal, but I think it has caused me to spend my money much more wisely than I would have if my 20's wouldn't have been a financial struggle.

    Yeah, I'm getting married in a couple of months and so far I've gotten mine gifts like event tickets, things relevant to their hobbies, etc.

    EDIT: Also, buying each of them the matching tie they need. (not having them rent tuxes)

    Did the same thing. I told them all to wear a black suit they already had and I provided the ties and matching socks. Worked out well and saved them all a bunch of money on renting a tux for a day.

    Swan Oyster Depot - get there early! It's an institution for seafood and crab

    If Nature Friends Tourist Club is open to the public, it's a must do. One of the coolest things I have ever seen! German beer hall overlooking Muir Woods (which you should visit)

    Fisherman's Wharf is pretty much Navy Pier, I like it better than NP but it's still a tourist nightmare. Seek out Bush Man on the Wharf if you want to scare/prank your wife.

    You can rent a sweet car for cheap from "Flight Car"

    Check out the neighborhoods, Mission, Castro, Hayes Valley, Haight Ashbury.

    Awesome. Appreciate it!

  11. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ May 20, 2016 -> 12:07 PM)
    Mama's. Fish. House. Make reservations.

    We wanted to go there, we were just never in the area. Didn't want to make the trip just for that.

  12. QUOTE (soxfan49 @ May 19, 2016 -> 06:37 PM)
    Well, it's official. I'm going to Maui. Can't believe I never really researched it. I was too focused on Kauai. Thanks to Steve and Kevo

    Awesome man. Have a blast! Difficult not to there.

  13. I think I mentioned this before, but remember, May only effectively had half a season in AA. Now he's in AAA, and coming off his concussion recovery. They're protecting him. He's not a guy they need today, so they want to leave all the pressure off as he adjusts to the level.

    That makes sense. I guess we just hear so much about how he could be up with the team next season taking Jackson's spot. Makes sense if that's not in their plans for next season. If he has a shot at being in the majors next season though he should be getting as many AB's as possible.

  14. Baby #1 is due in August. Planned on getting a Civic or Accord at the end of June...you guys have me reconsidering what I end up getting. My wife has a Subaru Crosstrek, which is also pretty small.

  15. I know this has been brought up before, but I never saw a good answer. Why is Jacob May hitting in the 9 spot all season instead or 1 of 2 to get him more at bats?
