QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Apr 20, 2006 -> 07:51 PM) If it's only a rough draft, you'll be fine. I'm sure your teacher will proofread and give you pointers as to what he or she wants. Yeah but I would like an honest opinion from fans that know what they are talking about. Also it is good to know what kind of grammatical errors that I wrote on my paper.

QUOTE(aboz56 @ Apr 20, 2006 -> 07:47 PM) Interesting thread. Why would you say that?
-
Hence that is why I apologized in the beginning of the last reply of kind of going off topic. I was just trying to prove you that some may say oh a child is alive/or isn't alive at conceiving because it is simple to say. We really don't have any tangible proof you may try to point abortions and all we with the small parts of a baby developing but who is to know really if the child was alive during that formation process.

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Apr 20, 2006 -> 07:32 PM) Well, first off I wouldnt completely discount the other side of the argument, as you are right now. You dont have to believe in curses, but you also have to try to understand why people do believe in curses. And the toughest thing about your paper is that there is no concrete evidence either way. Some people will say "they were just bad" and others will say "That team is cursed". The only "evidence" I can offer you is 3 teams who are 2 of the 3 biggest markets in baseball, failing to win a championship for over 85 years each. I wouldnt write this paper. There are too many intangibles, there is no concrete proof, it is based on belief, which you dont have. Its easy to say "I dont believe", but it isnt easy to say "Even though I dont believe, I am going to try to understand". I understand what you are saying. But I dont think you understand how this plays into the history of this sport, and that is the tough part about this argument. Not to go off topic but let say for example if my thesis statement were on the topic of abortion. Let say I was on the side that abortion was wrong. You see there are many people who do not believe that the child is alive in the women's fetus until the first trimester but there are others who think differently. Now there is no say to know if the child is really living yet or if the child is just being formatted in the fetus. People can say the child is alive right after conceiving but where is the tangible proof?

QUOTE(WCSox @ Apr 20, 2006 -> 07:31 PM) The criticism wasn't meant to be harsh, but you have to realize that what you wrote was not something that would earn you a passing grade in a college course. Make your argument in the opening paragraph and support that argument with examples in the following paragraphs. Cut out the part about Buckner's exile to Idaho, as it has nothing to do with your argument. So everyone is agreeing that I should cut off the Buckner part to my paper.
-
QUOTE(WCSox @ Apr 20, 2006 -> 07:22 PM) 1. The Red Sox won the 2004 WS 2. The Cubs front office being historically incapable of building teams that could be compeititve for several years (no back-to-back winning seasons from 1972-2004) 3. Curses are nothing but excuses for lack of execution (Buckner, Prior/Gonzalez) Cut out the "lack of supernatural occurance" crap and don't dwell on Buckner's move to Idaho. The former is garbage and the latter has nothing to do with your argument. Well thank you for that harsh criticism I appreciate it. I can sense a huge feedback of great honesty. So when I talked about Buckner at all did it makes sense at all or was it just going off the topic?

QUOTE(Texsox @ Apr 20, 2006 -> 07:13 PM) One of the potential joys of asking for help is learning that some people will have a differing opinion. Usually it is offered not to offend or to hurt, but it is sometimes fun to look and understand and possibly even use it. But I was always cursed and it never worked out I am not hurt by what the repliers are saying back to me, I even stated in the beginning of the thread to just be honest. Apparently, it seems that I suck as a writer and that I need help on my work. Also since this is only the first draft that I have to hand in to my professor by Wednesday, will show that I need to work on a lot more research.
-
QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Apr 20, 2006 -> 07:03 PM) Yeah, you have reiterated that many times. But that doesnt change the fact that your arguments are based on random things, such as lack of evidence in the scorecard and Bill Buckner moving to Idaho. We are going to get into another long debate like my last thread were we don't really understand one another. So I will be the bigger one and not get into this arguement all over again but I will ask you in your opinion: if you were writing this exact thesis statement paper what would be your 3 main points on how to support curses don't exist in baseball?
-
QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Apr 20, 2006 -> 06:42 PM) evidence? Do you think a witch flew out of the sky, cackled, waved her arms and said "You are cursed!"? There is no evidence of curses in anything but results. People feel the need to explain the lack of a championship in Boston and Chicago, and they cannot find any real reason why these teams sucked for so long, so they attributed it to a curse. I never said I do believe in a curse, and I totally agree with you that this is a reason why the media and the teams just go along with it. First, the media to create some kind of suspense to grab people's attention. Second, the team just use that excuse to be a scapegoat for their own failure/mistakes.

QUOTE(Beltin'Bill @ Apr 20, 2006 -> 03:24 PM) Based on your signature... 1. You have been a white sox fan your whole life. 2. You also love disco. No I don't like disco I just like the way it looked like but I love to listen to some heavy metal, rock, alternative music, things that fall under that catergory.

QUOTE(WCSox @ Apr 20, 2006 -> 03:22 PM) Westwood College certainly has some interesting courses. Your paper is in need of some serious revision. The first sentence ("Many people either believe or don’t believe in a curse.") is useless because it's completely obvious. There are also many instances in this paper in which you sound like you're speaking to somebody on the phone. It is imperative that you use proper grammar and complete sentences. Outside of the grammar, you don't really present a compelling argument. What does "no evidence of the supernatural" in the scorecards of the '86 World Series have to with anything? Present your argument at the end of your introductory paragraph, make sure that the following paragraphs support evidence for your argument, and summarize your paper in the last paragraph. Well I thought that since I quoted a definition of a curse from answers.com which mentions something about the supernatural. I thought I would mention that if the curse did have something to do with game 6 then there would be some kind of evidence that something out of the ordinary had to happened.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 20, 2006 -> 03:08 PM) Policing class? Yeah I am in college and my classes are College Writing II, Policing, Criminal Law, and American Government.

QUOTE(Beltin'Bill @ Apr 20, 2006 -> 03:15 PM) Not making fun of you at all. Just curious. I like the notion that I am stalking you, though. That would be a nice subtle question to help me continue my complete profile of you before I start camping out at all the places you frequent on a daily basis. By the way, no need to freak out over this stuff. You picked a fun topic so have fun with it. That is okay if you are stalking me. So what information have you gotten on me so far.

QUOTE(BobDylan @ Apr 20, 2006 -> 02:55 PM) Being in the writing field, I think you need to strenghten your thesis. You say curses don't exist, which I agree with...but I think you need to back that with what the fans and media had to say. Talk about how the Curse of the Bambino was used as a springboard for Boston to strive that extra mile. Talk about how the Curse of the Billy Goat further adds to the Cubs desperation. Back that desperation with quotations. Counter the curses with the White Sox, how our fans never believed in the curse and pointed fingers where they should've been pointed: management, players, etc. You have a lot of good material in there, I just think since the curses are fan and media created, you don't do your duty in the paper by leaving them out. Believe me I have quotations from sports journalist who think that curses are just another kind of hype for Boston and the Scrubs. But I will post my ten page thesis statement by next time but thank you again for some support.

QUOTE(Beltin'Bill @ Apr 20, 2006 -> 01:30 PM) I want to help you but this is just too long for me to scour while at work. I read a couple pages and have a couple overall suggestions. 1. Avoid redundancy. You frequently restate facts and names and other items from one sentence to the next. Shakespeare said it best in Hamlet..."brevity is the sole of wit" 2. Read your paper back to yourself out loud. If the sentence is awkward to read out loud, it will be awkward to the reader and confuse them, even though you know what you are trying to say when you look at it silently. 3. Avoid contractions (don't, we're, etc) and the first and second person (I, my you, your, etc.). 4. The Red Sox did not "shed" first blood in game 6, they "drew" first blood. Better yet, they struck first. Also, if I am not mistaken, the game was played at Shea Stadium in New York (You made reference to the 1986 Boston World Series Game, or something to that effect. Just call it Game 6 of the 1986 World Series. Alternatively, if you have already established the fact that it is the 1986 World Series, then just call it Game 6). 5. Organize your thoughts clearly and concisely in 5 pages for now. Your teacher is going to ask you to elaborate on some of the more compelling points and you will be able to meet the 10 page requirement. That is all I have for now. Good luck. Where do you attend classes again? Thank you for all your tips again I really appreciate it. I do have more information to put in the paper but I was freaking out because I really don't know how to word it sometimes. When you ask me where do I attend classes is that something you are making fun of me for because my grammar is bad? No offense I am just very aggravated because I have a paper to write about on how to put a silencer on a gun for my policing class too.

Hello for anyone on soxtalk! I need your favor! I don't know if you guys remember when I posted a thread last week a thread called curses! I needed that for my research to use toward my thesis statement. Well our teacher assigned us our first rough draft to be due which was required to be a length of five pages. I have so much information that I want to put in my paper which the final paper has to be ten pages long. Well I need your opinions on what you think of my paper. I would truly appreciate this! I don't care what you say as long as they are honest opinions.

What was the final score? I know we KICKED KANSAS ASS! OH YEAH GIVE IT UP FOR JAVY! OH YEAH WE WON! I just missed the final score. -
I do not like this one boy in my college classes which I have all my classes with. He is a major SCRUB FAN :headshake So one day he was talking bad about the Sox and he says The boy: We have better pitching than the White Sox Me: Oh really who won the World Series?! (I point to my world series ring that I got at the ring ceremony) The boy: Oh I am suprise that ring hasn't turned green yet Me: Hey buddy at least we got a ring! The Boy: Oh at least we don't have fans that run on the field and beat the s*** out of a first baseman coach! Me: In the newspaper they admitted to being Cub fans who went to see a Cubs game earlier and then wanted to see a real winning team! The Boy: Of course they are going to say that! The arguement goes on and on but now I am starting to resist him because I know he just wants to get a rise out of me.

QUOTE(Steff @ Apr 19, 2006 -> 09:55 AM) And he could suck. You never know. Point is there is no need to s*** on others for having concerns. For one thing I never said anything about concerns being a bad thing, but when you are really hard on a guy that is just going overboard. -

QUOTE(fathom @ Apr 19, 2006 -> 09:52 AM) I think everyone will be disappointed if Anderson doesn't turn out to be better than Rowand in his career. I agree with you because he could be like another Joe Borchard. But right now everyone is just being too hard on BA even though he is filling Rowand's place. That is a tough job to fulfill especially the last season with Rowand's tremendous skills out their in center field. -

QUOTE(Steff @ Apr 19, 2006 -> 08:23 AM) He's just saying what a lot of us are thinking about. You are being too harsh because it is too early in the season right now and for BA's career. Just wait and see he might turn out to be even better than Aaron Rowand you never know. -

QUOTE(bmags @ Apr 18, 2006 -> 11:05 PM) I shudder to see that we all praise this kid for doing the simplest of things...whenever he gets to the plate its a countdown to K...soon people will be bringing K signs to the cell for Brian anderson, not the pitchers. He got on base (ONCE) against kansas city. 2 in two games...and how many k's did he also have? At least get the ball in play...we might as well just say he's out before he even gets to the plate. I think you are expecting to much of Brian Anderson too soon. You just need to be patient and you will see that this kid will one day bloom and be a great player one day. I think BA is in a very difficult position because he is taking Aaron Rowand's place which we all know Aaron was great at center field. -
QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Apr 18, 2006 -> 03:41 PM) It's not neccessary though. The choices will be spaced appropiately. Thanks for the information! REMEMBER GO WHITE SOX!

I saw the game in person but I would like to hear Hawk's voice when Iguchi made the play.
-
Well you see I went to Saturday's game and I haven't seen a replay of it on a screen so far. But I was talking to my brother the other day I think Easter not quite sure if it was yesterday too but, he told me that play Iguchi made caused Hawk to scream out "Mercy!" I love Hawk and I am trying to search for a video clip to hear Hawk say "Mercy!" to Tadahito's play. Also to see the play on a screen myself.
