QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 9, 2012 -> 02:52 PM) Yeah, because he flaunts that s*** daily. There's never a fight over anything religious when it comes to the public - be it currency, statues, whatever. You're right man, religious people totally rule the world based solely on their beliefs. When a guy like Rick Perry talks about praying for God's intervention the country totally accepted that. The media didn't attack him for saying something so stupid. GMAFB. not being openly in-your-face religious about everything isn't the same as being anti-religious. Christians enjoy a huge majority in this country and this is built into our culture everywhere. Could an openly non-christian person be elected president?

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 9, 2012 -> 02:49 PM) I think it's pretty silly that you believe various elements just existed in space prior to the Big Bang. I'll just start calling you a dummy from now on if that's the acceptable way to behave when talking about these issues. I don't believe that. I don't believe that the initial state of the universe is well known or understood. You have made this mistake before. Absolute knowledge of how everything started isn't claimed. However, we know more than enough to know that young earth creationism is simply wrong. That isn't calling anyone a dummy.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 9, 2012 -> 02:48 PM) Oh really? When's the last time you heard a postive story about what a religious organization is doing? You don't. You hear nothing but negative. When's the last time religious was even a minor part of a TV or movie? Decades. Religion/religious people are made fun of constantly. This simply isn't true.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 9, 2012 -> 02:45 PM) Being religious in mass media is nearly unheard of these days. Yeah, most Americans might identify themselves as being religious or believers, but the portrayal of our society, and the acceptance of that in our society, is not comparable to those numbers. This simply isn't true.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 9, 2012 -> 02:42 PM) People being vehement (or straight up angry) about someone believing in something they don't believe. Would you agree that those are pretty silly things to believe in?

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 9, 2012 -> 02:41 PM) I've never met a sane/rational person that believes strongly in their beliefs that doesn't recognize that it is their belief, that spirituality at the end of the day is an individual thing, and that it is simply that - a belief that cannot be proven like a scientific problem. I get on the science community for stating theories of how something happened as concrete fact. SS likes to remind me that it's understood, if not clearly stated, that it's still a theory. I think religion operates the same way. Religion and science do not operate in the same way.

QUOTE (greg775 @ May 9, 2012 -> 02:27 PM) Why? I am actually a conservative Christian and pretty good person IMO. It implies that, absent an afterlife to punish or reward you, that is how you would act. I don't cheat on my wife because I love her. When you ask your question, it may lead someone to believe that the reason you don't cheat is out of fear of spiritual atonement and not your own moral convictions.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 9, 2012 -> 02:25 PM) Maybe your religion says to treat women equally, but the faith they have known since birth tells them differently. Who are you to say that yours is right and theirs is wrong? They would probably call you a cretan for letting a woman make a decision for you in your life. It's the only thing they know. On my phone so I can't easily find it, but I posted a thread here a couple of weeks ago with an article about the misogyny rampant in middle east cultures. The same sort of misogyny can be found in fundamentalist christianity, judaism and probably every other major religion. Dominance over women is a cross-cultural thing. It is embedded in religions because their early practitioners held these beliefs, but I wouldn't necessarily blame religion itself for it any more than I would for slavery. People will point to it to justify their beliefs no matter what they are.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 9, 2012 -> 02:18 PM) Perhaps it's both extremes, but I tend to feel that religious people get attacked much more as being morons that haven't accepted we live in a modern world full of the almighty science. There are a hell of a lot more religious people in this country than atheists. Atheists are still widely distrusted.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 9, 2012 -> 02:04 PM) Preface - i'm not all that religious myself, though I do believe in the Christian God and, generally, the teachings of the Christian faith. I just don't get why people who are not religious have to be so vehement about it, to the point of almost being angry. If someone wants to believe, let them believe. It's like you think that if anyone is talking to you about their beliefs they're preaching to you and you have to be all strong and defiant about not believing it, otherwise you'll be viewed as weak-minded. New Atheist assholes are the worst. See the ndt video I linked earlier.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 9, 2012 -> 08:38 AM) The military's role in the world is a huge issue for Libertarians. That one is the biggest difference between myself and the Libertarians. Socially and Economically I fit their views more than anyone else. It is, but push-comes-to-shove, they are much more likely to vote R before they vote D. Ron and Rand Paul are a good example since they run as Republicans and caucus with Republicans but take a libertarian foreign policy view. I believe the Libertarian Party also supported both the Afghan and Iraq wars, though I know many libertarians don't associate with the party. Libertarians have been pretty divided over that issue: pro-sell-yourself-into-slavery Walter Block takes Randy Barnett (leading force against PPACA) to task here.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 8, 2012 -> 05:25 PM) Old Testament? Some of it may have happened, but likely most of it is not real. New Testament, none of it is real, none of it happened. The Bible Unearthed was an interesting pop-archeology book by a couple of ancient middle east scholars. They examined the history behind the historical OT texts and really got into the history of the Jewish peoples. It gave me a bigger appreciation for the cultural aspects.
