It is embedded in religions because their early practitioners held these beliefs, but I wouldn't necessarily blame religion itself for it any more than I would for slavery. People will point to it to justify their beliefs no matter what they are.

The Bible Unearthed was an interesting pop-archeology book by a couple of ancient middle east scholars. They examined the history behind the historical OT texts and really got into the history of the Jewish peoples. It gave me a bigger appreciation for the cultural aspects.
