  1. So...You want Vaz to pitch only 4 or 5 innings each outing? NO. Next, please.
  2. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 07:08 PM) Much, much better comparison. Though there is one odd thing about Vlad's transition, check out his OPSs since 2000: '00: MON: 1.074 '01: MON: .943 (-131) '02: MON: 1.010 (+67) '03: MON: 1.012 (+2) '04: ANA: .989 (-23) '05: LAA: .959 (-30) '06: LAA: .882 (-77) Not too odd. 2003 was the year that his back took a dump. He's been a lesser man since then (but still awfully damned good...And scary as an NL-to-AL transplant). He does look to be on his way out, though. Check out his walk rate this year.
  3. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 06:51 PM) Jim Thome kicked ass in the AL for 9 years then switched over the the NL for 2 seasons, I'd hardly compare him to Abreu whom has spent his entire career in the NL. Ok, fair enough. The point remains the same:
  4. QUOTE(iamshack @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 06:46 PM) Trachsel of the worse WHIP, worse OBA, worse k rate, worse bb rate, and worse quality starts? Interesting... Trachsel who hasn't lost anything off of of his fastball. Trachsel who isn't #4 in one of the worst stats to be #4 in. http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/stats/league...amp;timeFrame=1
  5. QUOTE(iamshack @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 06:35 PM) Hint: When you use satire, you are supposed to somehow parallel what you are satirizing. Your post did not even come close to doing so. Are you suggesting that Trachsel is better than Garcia right now, if EVER? Yes. Right now, Trachsel is better than Garcia. I used the exact same stats that you did. How on earth can you claim your post makes sense, and that mine dies not? That's a steaming crock.
  6. QUOTE(iamshack @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 06:27 PM) How do you know that Freddy isn't injured? Then answer this question for me....WHERE ON EARTH ARE THEY GETTING THAT QUALITY STARTER without giving up Milledge AND/OR Pelfrey? What the hell is the point of this post? I know you are being sarcastic, but I have no f'ing clue what you are even suggesting. Greg Maddux has been a hell of a pitcher in this league, dude. And Jose has been as well. WTF are you even saying? My point is that your post citing the two pitchers' historical records as a valid indicator of their curretn ability/value is just plain dumb. YOUR post had no point, unless your point is that Freddy is an upgrade NOW because he was better IN THE PAST.
  7. QUOTE(iamshack @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 06:20 PM) And I don't know where you get off saying Garcia isn't a SIGNIFICANT upgrade over Steve Trachsel. Trachsel is 128-139 in his career with a 4.24 ERA, all in the National League, save for the year 2000. Meanwhile, Freddy is 109-68 in his career with a 4.02 ERA, all in the American League. Not a significant upgrade my ass. Greg Maddux is 325-199 with a 3.07 ERA for his career. Jose Contreras is 44-19 with a 4.11 ERA for his career. I wonder if they'd swap with us if we threw in Fields?
  8. I just watched the last 20 seconds of ATH. Jay has new blond highlights in his hair. He's maaaaaaantastic!
  9. QUOTE(iamshack @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 03:29 PM) I would think if you could get Heilman and Humber from the Mets for Garcia I would think if you could get Heilman and Humber from the Mets for Garcia that Santa Claus was involved and we were very good boys and girls.
  10. QUOTE(VAfan @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 03:26 PM) Personally, I wish KW would offer Philly Pods and Haeger (or some equivalent minor league pitcher) for Abreu and $6 million cash (to reduce his 2007 salary to $10 million). Only if they throw in Rollins and Gordon. I bet that trade gets turned down in MVP baseball even with "fair trades" turned off.
  11. QUOTE(RME JICO @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 02:52 PM) Classic! Before that pic, I was jealous of his hitting.
  12. QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 02:39 PM) Thames has so many clutch big hits that I'd love to see him go. And if Detroit wants to weaken their primary strength and throw in some of their starting pitching, then be my guest. I don't fear hitters coming from the weak NL to the AL. "Hi."
  13. Scott Reifert is great. Those voicemails need to be leaked to jaythejoke.com.
  14. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 02:08 PM) I honestly can't believe that this is a real trade proposal. I think this Rob Parker columnist from the Detroit News is making this thing up. If those are the only players involved this deal would have been done already. I find this very hard to believe. Yeah, it'd be kind of like Thornton and Dye for Pujols. I'm with you. The proposed deal has to be made-up.
  15. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 01:36 PM) Abreu has a nice OBP because he has walked 87 times this year. He has Pat Burrell as protection, so what would you rather do. Face Abreu or face Pat Burrell. Abreu is great player, but look at the seaosn of the guy he would be replacing. Thames has an 1.009 OPS with 19 dongs and plays half his games in a very large park. Abreu makes a lot of money, and would kill them making other deals. Abreu also hits lefty pitching well, and righties not as well. So it counters why you would pick him up, to be protection for righty pitchers. I would be worried more if they were picking up Ibanez. "Not as well" does not mean "bad." He has an .864 OPS vs. Righties, ya know. That would mean that Abreu's weak side this year is better than what Magglio's doing on the year as a whole. So, at his worst, Abreu > Magglio. As for Thames, look at his minor league numbers. He's a fluke. In fact, so is Minor. They're both outperforming thie minor league numbers IN THE MAJORS. If that's all the price really is, I can't imagine why the deal isn't done yet.
  16. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 10:52 AM) and he wasnt until he lost nearly all his trade value. That was my point. :rolly
  17. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 11:48 AM) and than you will be stuck with Crawford. Which isnt really a bad thing although with a crowded OF they got the longer the wait the worse. Stuck with Crawford. Darn. Were I Tampa Bay, Crawford would be the toughest guy to get from me. Hollins/Gomes/Dukes would all be cheaper (ok, Hollins would be about free). Crawford, Baldelli, Young, Longoria, Orvella, Upton (anywhere but at short), and Kazmir would be the nucleus of the team I'd build...For the purpose of winning in 2008. I really can't figure out why there are Crawford rumors. Why the hell would they move him? He's Mr. SuperTeamBuildingBlock.
  18. I really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really hope the Tigers don't get Abreu. If they get Abreu, I'm bypassing the standing-on-the-ledge phase of fandom and just jumping. In fact, I think we should pick up Abreu just to keep him away from Detroit.
  19. QUOTE(iamshack @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 11:10 AM) If you were the TB FO, would you even think about dealing Crawford for 4-5 top prospects of a team's marginal farm system? I'd demand a Bailey and a Zumaya (or something along those lines).
  20. QUOTE(RME JICO @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 11:22 AM) He is probably looking for a new job right now, maybe a permanent figure on Around the Horn! That would be the perfect place for him. If the Sun-Times fired him and he went full-time ESPN, it would be like Sea-World freeing Willy or whatever. "Back to your own kind you go, little fella! No, don't look back! Just go! Go, damn you! *crying*"
  21. "Joe Borchard is not for trade. No way." Anyone remember that?
  22. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 18, 2006 -> 07:32 PM) You really have no idea who Vernon Wells is don't you? Right now he's probably the best defensive outfielder in the American League and probably second in baseball behind Andruw Jones. He is not a leadoff hitter, he's much more of a 3 hole hitter, great contact, real good pop, great run producer with some above average speed. I've always thought the world of him because he has so many well polished tools. Indeed. For Wells, we move Anderson over. We don't move Vernon. Vernon can play CF all he wants. That'd be this lineup, I guess: Iguchi, 2b Crede, 3b Thome, dh Konerko, 1b Wells, cf Dye, rf Pierzynski, c Uribe, ss Anderson, lf Crazy. Never going to happen, but crazy. That would also likely be the best defensive outfield in history.
  23. "I said I had a feeling he'd (Konerko) hit a homer tonight, didn't I?" Am I imagining things, or does he say that he has that feeling about Paulie in every single game? Kind of like mlbtraderumors.com or ESPN's rumormongering geniuses...If you just say "Team x will make a big trade before the deadline" about every team in baseball, you get to say you're right at the end.
  24. QUOTE(IowaSoxFan @ Jul 18, 2006 -> 05:05 PM) With the Reds making some moves in their bullpen trying to firm up a payoff run, the one big weekness that they have now is in the starting rotation. I think we could deal Garcia to the Reds for Todd Coffey and Homer Bailey Coffey was great as a setup man, and real bad as a closer. He could slide into Cliffs slot easily. Homer Bailey has a rocket attached to his shoulder but is still at least a year away from being ready to start. Garcia would be better than most of what the Reds have now, and would help them overtake the Cardinals in the weak NL central. Why don't we just give Garcia for Verlander and Zumaya?
  25. In fact, we can expand that to include with runners on first if you like: Loretta Runners on .299 Ortiz Runners on .295 Ramirez Runners on .290 Iguchi Runners on .343 Thome Runners on .368 Konerko Runners on .358 Podsednik is looking good because the people behind him are doing well. He doesn't have magic Podsjuice that makes him score more often. QUOTE(iamshack @ Jul 18, 2006 -> 05:03 PM) I know this isn't very easy quantifiable, so god forbid we actually make an argument that it might exist, but did you ever stop to consider the possibility that maybe Scott's speed on the basepaths distracts the pitcher or helps the hitter at the plate while he is on base? Oh, sure...That amazing Pods caught-stealing speed adds .80-.100 points of BA to everyone behind him. It works wonders for Juan Pierre's support crew, too, right?
