Robert HBP. Is he OK? No panic, just following on Gameday.

Also, is he gonna lead off long term? Is that really the plan for him? I think his speed is great, but think he'd be better in the cleanup or third slot.

He got hit on the jersey. Not even sure it hit his body. It was chest high and he leaned out of the way, but it got his jersey solidly.

Sheets is on fucking fire.  A.J. Reed better enjoy his opportunity, because Gavin isn’t going to let it last for long.

Sheets keeps this up, he gets dealt in the offseason. Him and Walker + another OFer isn't a bad package.

Under the assumption that they are going to keep Abreu, there's no room for Sheets. Vaughn isn't far behind him so 1B/DH is Vaughn/Abreu.

I know the quote. Scouts say shit like that all the time. Every year there’s a new one. I used to run into a scout in my territory pretty regularly and every single time there was a new “best hitter he’s ever seen”

Im not discounting Robert’s ability, but come on.

Ryan Sweeney was a "golden god."

  4. I was "watching" on gameday when I saw Robert was going to hit that inning. When I saw the ole "in play, run(s)" I was thinking, man it would be cool if he did. Damn near lost my mind when I saw it. He's going to put up some serious numbers in that park with that ball.

    2 walks for Vaughn.

Both four-pitch walks. I know the assumption is he won't stay in Kanny long, but the four-pitch walks are as much a sign of him being too good for the level as anything else. If pitchers are still pitching around him, move him up.

I feel like the following line is not unreasonable to expect from Madrigal, provided he's healthy and becomes a capable ML hitter:

    650 PA

    210 H

    50 2B

    15 3B

    5 HR

    50 BB

    35 K

That produces a slashline of .350/.400/.508, which if combined with 50 SB and Gold Glove defense is easily an all-star and probably a 6 fWAR player.

70 extra base hits?! 70?! The dude had 28 in 500 plate appearances in the minors. You're asking him to double his power as he goes UP to the majors.

Thank God he CAN’T have a high OPS.  That would absolutely ruin everything that is good about him.

I don't dislike Madrigal as a prospect, but it's funny how he went from criminally underrated to criminally overrated in a month.

And Vaughn is a 30 runner stuck at 1B. Vaughn needs to be, what, one of the 5/10 best hitters in baseball to be a 5 win player? Madrigal needs to merely below average at hitting for power for a shot to be a 5 win player.

I don't see Madrigal being "merely below average" at power as more likely than Vaughn being a top 5-10 hitter in baseball, to be honest. The way Madrigal swings there's no way he's going to add notable power.

I didn't think this was a controversial take. Listen to Law and Callis talk about Madrigal, and it's the same thing: There's just no path to him having a high OPS. He can hit for high average, walk an OK amount and be a slap hitter while being a good baserunner and very good fielder. That's still a limited ceiling though.

It seems almost impossible to me than Madrigal won't be at least an average everyday player. If he even develops the power to hit 15 HRs he's going to be a perennial All-Star. Vaughn has a way lower floor and probably a lower ceiling as well.

Vaughn has a lower ceiling?! Man, Madrigal has one good month and suddenly this guy is a rock star. Madrigal is the very definition of limited ceiling.

I think Sheets could be in for a promotion as well.

He's barely had more than one good month. Yes, the progress we're seeing is nice given that he has improved month-by-month, but I don't see the need to push him just yet. Unless the Sox really think AAA is "easier" for hitters given the hitting environment there and in Bham and they want to bump his trade value, I don't see it being necessary.

    Up to Charlotte or Chicago?

I can't imaging them bringing them to Chicago, but, man, the excitement in the fan base would be out of this world. Honestly, would love to see it. "They're all here, let's play ball."

  12. DJ Gladney with his fourth homer. Dude is mashing the ball right now and still 17 for 10 days. Only thing is, his K rate is massive. At the least, he's an interesting prospect.

No Vaughn in the AZL lineup. Hopefully on his way to Kanny.

Simple off day with a day game following a late one. I think they give him another game or two in Arizona, not that they need to. Collins got 3 in the AZL, Burger got 4, Madrigal got 5. Vaughn is at 3. It's not long.

  14. I think Sheets is turning himself into a trade piece and nothing more. He's still more of a throw in guy than a centerpiece in any notable deal anyway. The Sox could try to package Walker and Sheets to get some pitching. Not sure what that nets them, but that's what I'm thinking.

I would 100% rather see Mercedes instead of Palka and then send wellington to the moon

That's kind of where my head at is as well. Palka is getting another shot and I'm fine with that. If he continues to struggle in the bigs, I wouldn't mind seeing Mercedes get his roster spot (assuming Mercedes continues to rake). I don't think expect/want them to be playing the experiment game in 2020. This might be the last year they can do these "well, let's see if you're anything" type of experiments. We've gone through Engel, Delmonico, Cordell, Tilson, Palka (I'm probably missing a few) and none of them have stuck. One more in 2019 ain't gonna hurt anything.

  16. Mercedes with another homer. I'm not in anyway calling for him to get a call to the bigs soon, but if he sustains monster numbers in AAA (and I mean monster considering the hitting conditions) the rest of the year, I'm willing to see him at least get a cup of coffee in the bigs to see if he's got it.

Don't you think Walker has more ability than Gonzalez though. I think we tend to look at results over talent too much.

Yeah, like I said, I have Walker ahead of Gonzalez now. I'm just saying I don't really know what to make of Walker's performance given all those W-S guys from last year have really struggled in Bham. I thought Gonzalez was for sure a big leaguer. I'm not sure what his ceiling is/was, but I thought his floor was a good 4th OF/below average everyday player. I think I missed on that.
