  1. If Fields's average was... say... 40 points higher, there would be no concern whatsoever about how often he strikes out. Hell, a lot of power hitters strike out a lot. But they make up for it because they get walked a lot and they will have more than enough OBP to make up for all those outs. Fields does not. Jim Thome will strike out 150 times in a year, sure. He will also get walked 110 times. Konerko's numbers are similar on a smaller scale b/c he doesn't strike out as much, Dye gets less walks than either of them, but also has a career average of .275 that's usually higher when he's healthy which makes it not really matter. Fields, on the other hand, struck out 125 times and walked 35 times. His ratios in the minors don't really back up a claim that he's just had this problem since getting called up to the majors, either. It basically means he has trouble hitting the ball, which to most people should be a big red flag that means he still needs time to develop as a player instead of trying to make him out to be an automatic All-Star in his second year starting.

This is not to say that Fields will never be a good player because he will. It's to say that there is plenty of evidence that Fields has things to work on before he becomes a reliable everyday MLB player, and "strikeouts are no different than any other out" is a weak rebuttal to that.

I wouldn't be surprised if, as PA approaches, if the polls are still close, the Clinton campaign scrapes the bottom of the barrel and throws some stuff out there that they were hesitant to before. They'll do it just before the primary, so it hits the press, but before it can be analyzed and taken in by the public.

She's done it before, but it ended up backfiring on her in the long run.

All 14 of those questions are valid. I see nothing wrong with them. No one knows anything really about Obama. It'd be nice if he actually got some hardball questions instead of the usual crap he gets on shows like the view.

They are valid if you have a certain (narrow) point of view and you've already made up your mind, as Tex said.

Let me put it this way... ask these questions at a white supremacist rally and you will get a standing ovation, ask these questions at a meeting with black separatists and you'll get your ass kicked. Half the questions are complete nonsense. Who cares if a pastor at a black church has pictures of Jesus with dark skin? I bet he has a black Santa Claus under his tree at Christmas too, is that important?

Bottom line, these are not serious questions for someone to ask if they want to start a serious dialogue about race that is different from what we've been doing. If someone can't at least make a half-assed effort to understand people that are different from them and are only interested in assigning blame, I see no reason their opinion should be responded to, acknowledged, or even respected.

LOL, I was thinking more along the lines of optioned, then DFAed to make room for someone else on the 40 man, to being traded. That would work too though.

It would suck for MacDougal though.

I hope it doesn't have to happen for him of course... then again I don't feel too good about it after watching him for a little bit. Same garbage from last year.

This being the positive thread, if we do have to dump him at least we have Wasserman ready to step in.

  5. Having known about the site for a while before I ever registered, Soxtalk does have a reputation of being in panic mode all the time. But that doesn't really bother me. The only thing that honestly bothers me is the constant hijacks to Crede vs. Fields but that really can't be prevented. A year or so ago it was Brian Anderson vs. Darin Erstad, or better yet Anderson vs. Anderson wasn't it? On the Bears official board (which I avoid like the plague) they actually had to create a subforum called "Bears QB discussion" because they couldn't stop getting people to argue about Grossman vs. Griese. It's just a byproduct of a message board you have to live with.

I disagree? Weird of you to say things so matter of fact like you are the only one who watched the game.

There's really not that much to dispute though. He was throwing meat, walking guys, and his stuff just wasn't there and nobody was fooled by anything. Uribe's error didn't help things but it was just all around terrible... maybe he might skate by on a weak offensive team.

How many times have we heard exactly the same thing about Bobby and Velocity to start a season now? And each time we hear it he seems to get better. He's throwing right where he was last year as far as I can tell, and from what I've seen his fastball seems to have a lot more bite/movement on it than it used to when he was throwing 102 and straight.

Agreed, Bobby used to be brought up as a starter before he failed at that, so he has 4 pitches. It's not a big deal if his fastball is missing a couple mph if his control is still there.

I am not as down on the count as most people. He only sucked a little. He didn't get much help defensively. He struggled too, yes, but it wasn't as bad as most people in other threads would say.

He did, and yes it was. It wasn't like Vazquez's outing. He pretty much has to do a complete 180.
