    Ethier and Kemp, really? What could we possibly have to move for them? Those guys are all-stars in their mid 20s, their version of Carlos Quentin except not injury prone and better defensively.

    I dunno man; how do you trade for Jake Peavy? Pretty much anybody but Pujols is available.

  2. QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 10, 2009 -> 01:24 PM)
    If you are placing more importance on exclusively next year why do you care if the players are young and cheap?

    Youger players typically play way better defense.

    Part of me would LOVE Milton Bradley to play here. He would eat up playing for this side of town. But I don't know if his defense is what I want rotating out there.

  3. I think I place more importance in going for it all next year than the majority of you. If Freddy Garcia turns into an absolute steal then next year IS THE YEAR. Best rotation, our infield is set, our bullpen needs a piece, and our outfield needs 1 major piece that can also play great defense. Sign Pods too and Kotsay too.

  4. Forget Abreu and Figgins. IMO they would only be transitory filler parts, not long term solutions. The purpose of this thread is to talk about young guys entering their primes who aren't usually discussed as available; kinda like Swisher was supposed to be had he not busted with us. If KW isn't going to sign a FA OF, then he has to trade for one. Here are a couple off the top of my head, and if you help me list them all, then we will more than likely discuss the guy KW eventually gets this offseason.

    Kemp

    Ethier

    Coughlan

    etc

    he had a great year, but his history shows we can't count on a duplicate, a solid one year deal I have zero problem with, anything beyond that is a mistake IMO. I think they should wait until the FA hit the market, let's see what Matsui, Damon, etc.. are asking for before we ink pods

    Pods put up great stats. I think he is by far our best hitter; seems like that dude just knows how to take what the pitcher gives him and get a hit. No? Beckham and AJ seem to have this ability as well.

  6. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Oct 8, 2009 -> 10:11 AM)
    Maybe J.R. needs to take a chance and go a little over the mystery budget everyone seems to know about.

    This is by far the best post in this thread. I love how it got no responses because it insulted the masses. I'm with you on this one dude.

    This pitching staff is too special to not spend 100 Million. If we overspend and field the correct team, the attendence spike when we start 35-10 will surely pay for these players.

    And it starts with Bobby in the back.

  7. Sure does seem like alot. We already have an expensive fatboy who has back issues only because of fatness. Why do we need another guy who has zero respect for his own body. It's risky trading for someone out of shape, and I think that factor would have to WEIGH into the deal. I'm funny but also serious.

  8.

    I like the financial flexibility angle you're going with here. I agree with all of it, but how do we know we cannot afford him? Maybe Jerry opens his pockets this winter in order to go for it. This pitching staff is as good and as safe a bet as any this team has probably ever had. We need Bobby in that bullpen.

    Out of curiosity, where did you get the 7 million number? Could it be less based on his shaky performance this year, maybe round 4 mil?

  9. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Oct 1, 2009 -> 08:29 PM)
    We don't have the bullets anyway.

    I agree. Seems like it would take all the bullets. We do need to go for it starting this year though, and to make me happy, all we need is a super stud outfielder and a bullpen piece. Super stud. I really want that Coughlan guy from Florida, based solely on ESPNs stats.

  10. Why does everybody wanna give up on fatboy so fast? Dude has been nothing short of phenomenal since his arrival. He seemed a little shaky this year, but let's give him another look see. We almost have to since his stock is the lowest it has been since we snagged him up. Our bullpen becomes awful if we get rid of him. In the 9th inning of a 1 run, pressure packed situation, I still trust Bobby more than Matt; although the margin between the two is slimming (hopefully like fatboy this offseason).

  11. It's great we all agree that we will look back on this trade as the best thing to ever happen. Thome was a cancer on this team and I smelled a rat from day 1. Mr Nice Guy Class Act s*** was just that, an act. His pull-happy, strikeout machine style of play has ruined us. Konerko can stay for as long as he wants, but Dye has to go too.

  12. QUOTE (dmbjeff @ Sep 5, 2009 -> 12:35 AM)
    I completely agree. This organizations philosophy regarding the DH positiong the past 15 years or so has been to stick a bad fielding hitter in the spot. I'm tired of having Thome/Baines/Thomas type guys in the spot when we can use the spot better like the Yankees and Angels tend to do and give guys more rest.

    Bad fielding hitters, yes. A player like this makes one less good fielding hitter available. And even worse, to throw 8 figures at this type of player?! Now your bench is forced to be filled with guys who make near league minimum that aren't very good. If this money were spent on 2 good players I think the Sox would be much better off.

  13. Something like 3-0 since old cloggy was traded. I like the idea of using the DH position to rest position players. If you have 9 good players then they can always play/DH. Sticking a "DH" like Thome in the DH position really cramps flexibility/playing time. Why not just have 9-10 guys who can really play is the question I'm posing.

    Tonight- Perfect example. Ozzie rested Q but kept his bat in the lineup. Maybe Tmrw JD slides in the DH hole, and then Pods the next day. My point is that it is an excellent way to keep guys fresh. Having Thome forces actual athletes to not play.

  14. QUOTE (gravybread @ Sep 3, 2009 -> 05:29 PM)
    Fun Fact: Jim Thome is currently tied with Sammy Sosa for 2nd place all-time in strikeouts.

    Also an important fact IMO. Apparently on this board strikeout kings are heroes. Yea Jim Thome is great. I love how a left handed pitcher will get him out almost every at bat too. That makes him extra valuable in pressure-packed late inning situations when a lefty specialist is brought in. An automatic out is always acceptable because he's a nice guy. Let's have him play with us til he's 45, where the defensive shift will actually be just a line of guys down the right field line. Sign me up for another decade of pull-happy, captain strikeout, can't go from 1st to 3rd unless it's a triple Thome.

  15. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 3, 2009 -> 02:47 AM)
    You don't have to sprint around the bases after you hit it out of the park.

    That, and the Sox don't have any type of left handed power in the lineup, and I imagine he's only going to sign with the White Sox or maybe Cleveland. If he doesn't get an offer from either, I think he hangs it up.

    Yay he hits 30 homeruns, but over 500 plate appearances. That leaves 470 strikeouts with a a few walks and hits scattered in there. Too bad his walks and hits are completely useless since it takes 3 more consecutive hits to score him.

  16. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Sep 3, 2009 -> 12:48 AM)
    As said before, we traded him so he could get a ring.

    I'd pick him over Dye for DH next year though.

    I'd thank both of them for their services and say "Never step foot on my field again, either of you. Take your slow beat up legs to another city."
