QUOTE (raBBit @ May 5, 2015 -> 08:48 PM) Again, aren't you going into baseball? Wouldn't a metric with predictive value have utility for your career when evaluating the fruit of your labor? EDIT: Just because you don't understand something that doesn't make it stupid. I'm not going into that. I do understand the stat. I'm not an advanced stat guy, what is so wrong with that? I think it is an irrelevant stat. I feel like I can watch the game and see how a player is hitting the ball (how hard he is hitting, what his base hits are like, etc.) and tell if he will hit well or if his average will sustain or not. I know a lot of people now like advanced stats but I just don't.

QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ May 5, 2015 -> 08:41 PM) The whole point of this is that the statistic tells you it's due to drop. You're essentially saying "I don't understand why this high thing is about to become lower so I'll say it's good when it's high and bad when it's low". No, it's called I don't care about the stat. I know Avi won't be hitting .340 and probably not even hit .290. But currently he has been our best hitter average wise the last 10 or so games. Trust me, I know his average is going to drop a lot, I would be happy if he ended up hitting over .270 for the year. I don't need a stupid stat to tell me he won't hit .330+ for the year, that is just common sense by watching him hit

QUOTE (raBBit @ May 5, 2015 -> 08:27 PM) Let's make a bet on Avi's average and BABIP relationship. Right... I don't care about his BABIP for the 10th time. I am not an advanced stats guy so I won't be making any bets involving them And I am not saying Avi is going to continue to hit like this all year. I said he has been hitting the ball well lately and that is all I care about at the moment. Once his average starts to drop a lot then I will worry.

QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ May 5, 2015 -> 07:54 PM) They can be compared, in the sense that both had an inflated batting average on the 6th of May in consecutive years. And I just told you he's not particularly hitting the ball hard. And the point of BABIP is to worry before the average goes down. There is a difference though, we all knew Flowers was going to come back to earth because he has always been bad, Avi doesn't really have a track record at the MLB level while be healthy and he has a way better chance to hit over .280 then Flowers does I told you, I don't care what is BABIP is. Until he stops hitting the ball and getting on base it doesn't really matter to me.

QUOTE (Soxfest @ May 5, 2015 -> 07:48 PM) Really it is called a caught stealing I know but he wasn't running to try and get a stolen base. There is a difference

QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ May 5, 2015 -> 07:48 PM) Yeah and this day last year the highest average on the team belonged to Tyler Flowers. And his hard hit % is 86th of 183 qualified hitters. Tyler Flowers and Garcia can't be compared. Avi is young and has the tools to be a good hitter. Once his average goes down and he isn't hitting the ball hard when he gets out then I will worry about it. He is playing well right now, let's be happy we have at least one guy hitting well

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 5, 2015 -> 07:43 PM) Tigers' announcers disagree...and you know they would err on the side of taking a hit for their guy if it was in any doubt. Play was made. Doesn't really matter now

QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ May 5, 2015 -> 07:37 PM) I'm not commenting on that play, more that he's at 0.0 WAR with a .441 BABIP He's hitting it less hard than in 2012 and 2013 when he was worth a combined -0.5 WAR. Seems like he's had a lot of soft and medium line drives, which are unsustainable. Not this again... He has the best average on the team and he hit the ball hard. I don't care what his BABIPBIPE is.
