  1. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jun 2, 2014 -> 01:41 PM) We should easily be able to trade Beckham for a comp A pick. God, I would hope so.
  2. QUOTE (daggins @ Jun 2, 2014 -> 12:26 PM) If the Sox land one of the CB picks wouldn't he almost have to draft under slot at #3? That might mean Nola, who I would be ok with. I thought that if you picked up a Comp Bal pick that you got the slot money for that pick added to your pool. So the Sox would still have the $9.5M that they already have but then they would get another $1.5M to correspond to that pick.
  3. QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jun 2, 2014 -> 11:10 AM) I wish we could have traded a RP for the #39. Even aside from the pick itself, that bonus added to the pool would have been terrific. I can't believe the Marlins shopped around much & I can't imagine they called the Sox at all. Stupid Marlins. Anyone else looking to deal off competitive balance picks before the draft? Please call us. Please. I would be stunned if RH wasn't all over the rest of the teams that have competitive balance picks trying to get one. He knows how important this draft (and that cash pool) are to the long term health of the organization.
  4. As the draft draws closer, it would seem that no one has any idea what to expect come Thursday. I guess I could see things shaking out a handful of ways on Thursday. 1) Aiken, Rodon, Kolek 2) Aiken, Jackson, Rodon 3) Rodon, Aiken, Kolek 4) Rodon, Jackson, Aiken But there have been rumblings of the Astros going underslot like they did with Correa a couple years back and picking Nick Gordon. If that happens, I have no idea what to expect from any of this.
  5. QUOTE (southside hitman @ May 30, 2014 -> 10:44 AM) I am sure they will be trying to cut deals up until the day. Was it leaked in previous years? I remember the year they took Correa I thought it was surprise. It was. I remember watching that draft and even the in house announcers were caught off guard.
  6. I just wish some kind of info would leak about Houston's intentions for their pick. The waiting is killing me.
  7. QUOTE (Lillian @ May 30, 2014 -> 08:17 AM) If they select Kolek, I hope that they just concentrate on helping him develop a great change up. He could probably be successful, and stay healthy, just throwing the heater and a change. He allegedly already has a decent slider that could end up being a plus pitch and a curve that isn't far behind.
  8. QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ May 29, 2014 -> 10:58 AM) Everyone is a risk. You can't "make sure" of much of anything, and "hitting" on someone seems to describe the process very well, i.e. you identify a target, take aim and fire, but between you and target lie a whole host of variables you cannot control. They put a graphic up last night on the boob tube about TJ surgery and how there is a 90% recovery rate where each pitcher comes back as healthy or better. That is terrific to know. Do you expect any of Kolek, Aiken, or Rodon to never have to need surgery? If Hoffman was their guy before, then he should still be on their radar now. They don't need to give him an MLB deal, and can get him way under slot, and doing so could allow for a very deep draft by spreading money around in every area. Basically it's the equivalent of trading a pick which you can't do, but same thing, you're "trading" the bonus money and opting to play the numbers game. I think it's a really cool idea and not as "risky" as it may seem. In fact if you get more better prospects then you might be pretty much mitigating that risk entirely. Wow. Didn't realize that the recovery rate was that high. That's awesome.
  9. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ May 29, 2014 -> 09:53 AM) I was starting to warm to the idea of Kolek until I saw the Brad Penny comp. If Aikens gone, I say Jackson or Hoffman at #11 slot money. I like the idea of being able to go way over slot for pretty much every pick for the rest of the draft, but Hoffman is a scary idea. I suppose Giolito worked out for the Nats though.
  10. QUOTE (bmags @ May 29, 2014 -> 09:34 AM) I hate to beat a dead horse, but after this season, where "obvious TJ candidate" Chris Sale is still healthy and 60 pitchers whom were not tagged with that label are under the knife, that part seems kind of meaningless to me. I'm more cool on Kolek because I just worry he won't really develop anything and end up in the pen. Sale also isn't an 18 year old that throws 103.
  11. QUOTE (southside hitman @ May 29, 2014 -> 08:17 AM) I wouldn't be opposed to Nola at #3 if Aiken and Rodon are gone and he signs underslot. Nola appears to be a safe bet on at least being a mid-rotation starter in a couple years, which would coincide nicely with our current core of player. I agree. I'm cooling on Kolek and the more I read, the more I think that both Aiken and Rodon will be gone by 3. Unfortunately, I think Kolek is TJ surgery waiting to happen. If Nola were available underslot, I would rather take him and still end up with a pitcher that has stellar command and 3 good offerings and then spend more on the next several picks.
  12. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ May 28, 2014 -> 09:56 PM) Who is Seth Lasko? His twitter says that he lives in Charlotte and works for both the Knights and the Checkers (Hockey). Looks like he used to work for NESN and the Boston Globe. So I guess it wouldn't be completely unheard of for him to have some industry connections.
  13. I don't see any way that the Sox wind up with Hoffman, regardless of what the first couple of picks are.
  14. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ May 22, 2014 -> 01:46 PM) I should start a habit of quoting you in posts that have nothing to do with what I'm saying I think that Baseball America is your best bet. Better coverage IMO.
  15. Jarrod Parker is a guy that (like Kolek) dominated in high school without much outside of an overwhelming fastball.
  16. I'd love to see that play out. Aiken is best case scenario as far as I'm concerned.
  17. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ May 15, 2014 -> 08:31 AM) There was a report posted earlier in this thread that there is still a chance that the Sox select Hoffman at #3. The odds aren't great that it is going to happen, but it could make sense in the right set of circumstances. I'm not saying that I'm in love with the idea, but if they are confident in him making a full recovery and they really liked him before the injury, they could sign him well below slot at #3 and then go over slot on the next several picks and add a ton of organizational depth.
  18. Who are the guys with the best chance of slipping out of the first round and possibly falling to 44? And would the slip be due to signability? Injury concerns?
  19. QUOTE (DirtySox @ May 7, 2014 -> 08:09 AM) Mocks should be taken with huge grains of salt lest they come from one of the reputable outlets who have sources on where teams are leaning. (BA, Law, Mayo/Callis etc). I know, that's why I started out by saying "probably nothing to it". I'm assuming that whoever put it together is just trying to get some blog hits (worked on me) and that they don't have any insider info. I just think that all of us are searching desperately for any indication of what any of the top 3 might do.
  20. Probably nothing to it, but I saw a mock this morning that suggests that Beede is the pick at 3 because he is the best college RHP now that Hoffman is hurt.
  21. How opposed (if at all) do the Sox seem to be to drafting a high schooler? Because I really believe that with Rodon's success lately he has a really good shot at going #1 overall.
  22. QUOTE (DirtySox @ May 6, 2014 -> 11:00 AM) Hoffman had a setback. Not making his planned start this week. Stay tuned. That's not good. I feel for the kid.
  23. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ May 6, 2014 -> 12:33 AM) Rodon. I would say it depends on Hoffman's remaining starts. They obviously liked Hoffman a lot before the injury so if he comes back and is healthy and dominant I wouldn't be stunned if they take him.
  24. FWIW, the newest mock on Bleacherreport.com has Rodon to Houston, Kolek to Miami, and Aiken headed to the South Side. I would love to see that end up happening. It might take him a bit longer to reach the majors but his stuff and understanding of how to pitch are outstanding for his age.
  25. QUOTE (southside hitman @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 08:58 AM) Danny Knobler ‏@DannyKnobler 7m One scout after watching East Carolina’s Jeff Hoffman: “This guy has to be Justin Verlander’s brother.” Cubs execs were in to see him. If Hoffman's soreness is truly just soreness, similar to what Chris Sale is experiencing, I don't think it effects his stock too much. With Rodon seemingly back in 1-1 form, I expect him to go first or second, giving us a choice between either Aiken/Kolek or Hoffman. Assuming Hoffman's injury is nothing that would linger, I like him over Kolek. Aiken is still my #1 overall, but I don't think he falls to us. I agree with your assessment. My preference list at the moment would be: 1. Aiken 2. Rodon (depending on his cost) 3. Hoffman 4. Kolek
