August 19, 20169 yr Every year, FutureSox gets asked about a few hitters that are tearing up rookie league pitching. Doubly true if it's an obscure recent draft pick. This year, we've been bombarded with questions about Aaron Schnurbusch. So, is a big statistical season in the Pioneer League meaningful? I explored some history to put it into context, then used the context to evaluate Schnurbusch.
August 19, 20169 yr Good stuff. Reminds me of a guy I followed back in the day, Derek Lee. http://www.baseball-reference.com/register...id=lee---002der 42nd rounder, eventually did get a cup of coffee with Twins.
August 19, 20169 yr Author QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Aug 19, 2016 -> 09:08 AM) Good stuff. Reminds me of a guy I followed back in the day, Derek Lee. http://www.baseball-reference.com/register...id=lee---002der 42nd rounder, eventually did get a cup of coffee with Twins. Wow. Dude was drafted in the 9th, 5th and 1st rounds, and didn't sign any of those times. Signed in the 42nd round as a senior.
August 19, 20169 yr Back in the day they had a bunch of secondary drafts. I think that's what those were. Not the main June draft. I don't know the history of why those drafts existed or why they were eliminated.
August 19, 20169 yr QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Aug 19, 2016 -> 07:20 AM) Back in the day they had a bunch of secondary drafts. I think that's what those were. Not the main June draft. I don't know the history of why those drafts existed or why they were eliminated. I learned something new. I never knew they had "secondary" drafts. One thing I wish baseball brought back was the old "draft and follow".
August 19, 20169 yr Terrific story and analysis. Good data and research. Agree with you. It's too soon to tell if the kid is a legit prospect. Odds are against it because the odds are against nearly every player. We won't know for several years. Thanks again for doing stories like this.
August 20, 20169 yr I just noticed that the numbers he's putting up now are similar to his numbers from Junior College. It sounds like he was overthinking things at Pitt. He was a pretty good Pitcher in JUCO. If he doesn't make it as a position player, he can give that a try. Aaron Schnurbusch statistics
August 21, 20169 yr This is what KATOH system tries to do, right? Take statistics over pedigree/scouting reports?
