nrockway
👀 Murphy scoreless through 3. 1 hit, 1 bb. 👀 Hard hit double in the 4th, nearly gone, but Shane 2.0 gets the next three. One more 1-2-3 inning for our man. 54 pitches through 5. Done after 5. Too bad. But a really great second showing at AAA. ERA at 1.80. Have to think he makes the team out of Spring Training. "he’s proven to have poise and smarts on the mound. There’s no overwhelming strikeout pitch in his arsenal, but his stingy attitude toward free passes (and safe hits that stay in the park) might well offset that." The biggest concern has to be the White Sox still having below average defense projected into 2026...that doesn't work nearly as well with pitch to contact/control guys. He's also going to have to beat out Thorpe who has a similar profile.

Both throw the 4-seamer around 89-92mph. I think one difference is the arsenal. Drew relied a lot on the 4seam and it was consistently crushed. Threw a cutter sometimes that looked better. I thought he should throw a sinker. His only good pitch is the changeup which is elite, but if you throw a changeup for the bulk of your pitches, it's pretty much just a really slow fastball. As I recall, hitters were just ignoring it and smashing the fastball. Thorpe can still be good and maybe he doesn't need a sinker if he could throw the slider reasonably well. Meanwhile, Murphy seems to throw a 4seam, cutter, sinker as fastballs and mixes them with a change, slurve, slider. Reasonably good arsenal for a guy who doesn't walk people and seems to have the hitters guessing. That might change against better competition. Also, unlike Thorpe, he is left-handed. I think he could be, like, a pretty good 4th or 5th starter. Or at least a nice bridge to bigger stuff lefties like Smith, Schultz, Oppor. Probably not lefty Greg Maddux. mac9001
I don't think I've ever enjoyed watching a minor leaguer pitch as much as I enjoy Shane Murphy. When you get a hit it's on his terms, I honestly can't talk myself out of a scenario where he's really damn good pitching to major league hitters. Him and Thorpe both have a similar trait in that hitters never seems to be comfortable in the box. When Thorpe was on he kept hitters so off balance that the contact just didn't amount to a lot of damage and I feel like Shane has that but with better command and a wider arsenal of pitches. At this point I'll be shocked if he doesn't have a long MLB career and you don't need to out up 5 WAR seasons to make a lot of money as a starter. You can just pile up innings and still makes tens of millions. Edited September 13 by mac9001
