Padres Could Sell for $3.5 Billion; MLB Insider Explains Why

The San Diego Padres could sell for $3.5 billion this year. An MLB insider explains why.

I've noticed ESPN is way more involved in hyping up MLB so far. Not sure if that's just related to the new TV thing (probably) but some of it is probably that MLB has pretty clearly surpassed the NBA in overall fan interest. I say this as a big NBA fan, it's just not a great product in the regular season.

Tanking controversy has been story of season. Then you also had the point shaving investigation with Billups etc.

I honestly haven't watched many full NBA games since Jordan left the Bulls...maybe the Mavericks/Cavaliers finals.

But that coming draft class is pretty much insane. A lot of instant impact.

The weird thing here is that foreign players in mlb are much more compelling (at least to me) to watch compared to the NBA. Except for unicorn Wemby...but that Jokic style is just such an acquired taste.

Maybe the collapse of the Warriors' dynasty as well. Fans complain about parity but love super teams like GS, Chiefs, Dodgers etc.

I guess the final part is University of Iowa just not producing many NBA players. Just Keegan Murray and now Stirtz.

Read the White Sox were 11th in payroll from 2004-2023 but the lowest return on investment in terms of attendance.

Of course if you add Kyle Tucker now the Sox zoom up to...18th.

And earlier if the off season the official Ohtani $70 million deal was higher than team payroll by $3 million.

Adding CLE Miami and the Sox payrolls together gets you to about $235 million.

  • Colorado Rockies: $118.3 million -

  • Pittsburgh Pirates: $102 million +

  • St. Louis Cardinals: $98.1 million +

  • Minnesota Twins: $96.7 million N

  • Athletics: $91.8 million +

  • Tampa Bay Rays: $89.6 million N

  • Washington Nationals: $87.9 millioN

  • Chicago White Sox: $83.9 million N

  • Miami Marlins: $79.4 million +

  • Cleveland Guardians: $70 million +

  • +=up ward trajectory N=neutral

*In recent years most cases of doubleheaders are split/day-night doubleheaders which means they have two gates/separate attendance figures. In these cases above they are true doubleheaders with only one attendance number.

White Sox 24th

CLE only has had two home dates officially due to rainout/DH

So much for the Pirates' Renaissance.

All four AL Central teams conveniently lined up in a row near the bottom.

If you combine home and road attendance, Sox are last in MLB at like 18k per game.

Sox at 28th but good crowd of around 30000 today.

TB doing much better than last season back at dome home.

AL Central still clustered at bottom ahead of Miami and Oak/SAC.

I always felt like the Sox did well on weekends vs weekdays/weeknights. Probably the same for other teams but at least the park looks full on Friday nights/saturdays and sundays. Good promos always help too.

Key point.

Used to be fireworks was enough.

Not anymore.
