Blue Jays: The Toronto Star reports that the Jays are closing in on Miguel Batista with an offer believed to be for three years and between $12 million-$14 million. Apparently, the Jays want him to make up his mind before the Winter Meetings start, and Batista's camp has been somewhat receptive.

 

Devil Rays: The Rays made a contract offer to free agent outfielder Carl Everett on Tuesday morning and general manager Chuck LaMar said he expected to have a response by Thursday. LaMar said if there is no progress or the sides are too far apart, the Rays will move on to either Jose Cruz or Juan Gonzalez.

 

Rockies: Left fielder Jay Payton tells MLB.com that he doesn't know how the signing of third baseman Vinny Castilla affects his chance to stay in Colorado. But the Rockies signed Castilla on Wednesday as a right-handed hitter with pop to bat sixth, behind Larry Walker. Of course, Payton did those jobs with aplomb in 2003, but now must wait for the Rockies to decide whether to tender him a contract. Rockies manager Clint Hurdle earlier told MLB.com that Jeromy Burnitz and Jose Cruz Jr. were viable candidates to replace Payton, partly because they tend to stay off the disabled list. The Rockies also were awaiting an answer from free-agent catching target Brent Mayne.

ESPN reported tonight that Batista had accepted that offer.

It's going to take a whole helluva lot more than Miguel Batista to help the Blow Jays compete in that division. Whichever team (Yankees or Red Sox) doesn't win the division will for certain be the wild card participant.

 

Gone are the days of baseball that we all grew up on. It's no longer a battle of the best teams (in terms of farm systems and growth). Now it's just a battle of the biggest spenders.

 

I hate what the salary cap has done to football and basketball, but sometimes I wish it would be implemented in baseball. I would love it just so Steinbrenner could have a coronary and drop dead.

 

Stress will get to him eventually. No one is immortal, though he thinks he is.

The salary cap in baseball will not occur till two things happen.

 

1. George Steinbrenner sells the Yankees.

2. George Steinbrenner buys the White Sox.

 

Of course, THEN they would do something to tie his hands.

That's quite a lot for a veteran pitcher who I don't think has won more than 15 games in a season. Still J.P Riccardi is goin heavily afta pitching this offseason but he's lettin Cory Lidle go and Kelvin Escobar went to da big bucks in Anaheim.

A career high 11 wins for Bautista I believe.

He better not want big money. His ERA last year was like 6.00. He put up Ritchie-esque numbers, he just got a little run-support.
