Maggs makes 14 million now, and was offered a four year 48 million dollar deal which he rejected. Now I bet he'd jump on that in a second. Maggs isn't gonna get that big money he is looking for. there are just too many other corner OF options out there, and people are spending their money on Pitching.

He didn't jump on it a month ago, what makes you think he'll jump on it now? Our offer probably wasn't 4-years and $48 mill guaranteed either. How much do you wanna bet that probably something like $12 mill of it was deferred into the 20s?

 

Regardless, he's said he wants to test the FA market. And I personally don't think we would resign him anyways. Why not get value for him now instead of watching him leave and getting nothing, not even a compensation draft pick? IMO, I think getting the rumored LA package is undoubtedly the best option out there.

I think that just what the rumored LA package is, is a RUMOR. It's a BUNK deal. I know Evans isn't exactly the smartest man in baseball, but even he knows 4-for-1 or 5-for-1 is too much of a price to pay.

Which is why we throw in other players. KW is known to throw in a player or two every now and then, and sometimes throws in too many players.

 

It may not be 4-for-1 or 5-for-1 but possibly 4-for-4 or 5-for-4....I could see us maybe taking on a bad contract that does not have 'Jeff Weaver' on it. I'm not sure what LA has for bad contracts, but I'm sure they have one or two....like(and I know I'm going to get slaughtered for it), but maybe Todd Hundley. I believe he makes like $6 or $7 mill this year and is their 3rd string catcher. Hundley comes in and is an option at 1B, an option at catcher, and an option as a LH hitter coming off the bench.

 

Maybe we give them Ordonez, Konerko, Diaz, and Rauch for Perez, Mota, Hundley, Miller, and Jackson....something like that. I could easily see something like that happen. Neither team really gets robbed, and neither team really gets screwed over big time.

I still think there are teams that would be willing to invest $56 million over four years for a player like Magglio Ordonez. Teams like Boston or Los Angeles would not really have a problem offering a free agent something like that.

 

That's why trading him this offseason may be the only option. Once the season starts, Maggs' value in trades could go down because teams would know that our time is running short in trying to get rid of him. Only a desperate team with something good to offer could give us much for Maggs during the 2004 season. I love Maggs and I hate to read all this trade talk about him but the reality starts to set in that this team is a business and no man should take up 25% of our $50-60 million payroll. That just doesn't work.

I think Boston will be maxed out frankly and will not have much payroll flexibilty once they get Arod, unless they let Pedro go....

can we send Barry/Berry back to the Dodgers.

I think Mags realistic contract options will be cleared up when Vlad signs, He won't get equal or more than Vlad, so after he signs that should be a fair baramoter to what Mags will get Via free agency (ie Vlad signs for 16m, Maggs will probably get 12-14)

Maggs is coming off a prettty "average" Magglio year. I believe he can rebound to 950+ OPS/120 RBI-type produiction in 2004, and as pennant races are heating up and playoff buyers come out of woodwork, Sox will either get a lot of top prospects for him if they're out of it in ALC (heaven help us) or get ML-ready talent.

 

Same goes for Konerko whose typical April outburst may just raise his value. Koch? dumb him as soon as possible, he is done.

I tend to agree that Maggs could resign with the Sox. Sheffield makes $13M a year with Georgie S. deferring a bit and who knows what Vlad will get, but I think the Sox can offer Maggs enough to keep him, if the want to.

Sheff at 3 years for $39 Million at age 35. If I'm Magglio I'm grinning ear to ear right now. He will get in the neighbor hood of $15 million a year for 4 to 5 years. Guerrero will probably get 7 years or so, and his deal won't hurt Magglio either.

I'mstill baffled by this thought every day. Not sure why its an automatic write off for Koch because of a bad 2003. Go back and look at his numbers in ST 2003. In the "thin pitching air" in Arizona, he was still dominant. Yes, he sucked during the regular season of 2003, but you know what? That doesnt mean I wanna ship him off in exchange for some other teams high salary problem. Koch still has the ability to rebound more than say, Roger Cedeno.
