Mel Gibson

I don't understand. So, no movie should ever be made that isn't historically correct?

Currently Monster is embroiled in a similar albeit much, much milder controversy: Aileen's portrayal verges on sympathetic.

In reality, she was a remorseless, psychotic serial killer.

A. Chicatilo (Jack the Ripper times 10) blamed porn.

2. Mel Gibson's father could give Aunuld's father a run for his money in the slimey-f*** department.

Actually, it's not quite correct. Aunuld's Nazi-sympathizing wife-beating scumbag father never actually implied that Jews manually controlled the 9/11 planes to crash into WTC and Pentagon.

Mel Gibson's daddy, on the other hand....

On the plus side, I got out of my stupid Biomedical Ethics class--and into The Ethics of Jesus--so after I see the movie you can hear me rant even more educatedly about it.... :D

Oh, I love my school. First Jesus the Class, now Ethics of Jesus. I could have a concentration in Jesus!!!!! Hm, I'm going to look into that....

I would assume biomedical ethics is a juicy enough subject to keep your attention. It's a subject I'm fairly engrossed in, actually. Over and over, we see that working out the science side of the next "medical miracle" is often the easy part, and it is the ethical questions that usually overwhelm us.

AIDS cure coming along nicely, I presume?

The professor was just horrible. And all we talked about was abortion and assisted suicide. It was me against the class--and I thought, you know what: I'd rather be told I'm going to hell in a religion class. It should have been a good class but when profs don't stop personal attacks on students with minority opnions it isn't worth my time. So, no thank you. I love, love, love this religion prof, so I figure it should be better.

Soxy, you're hell-bound?

Actually the BioMed prof was a woman--and she didn't say anything which was worse. So, we got into the typical small private Christian school debate: Abortion is a sin and everyone that thinks it should be legal is going straight to hell. So, I said good thing I've got my ticket ready to be stamped. And, well, it actually managed to go downhill from there. But, that's sort of been every class I've taken here. Which is funny, because they are actually posters up all over campus complaining about the "liberal bias" in the classroom--but I can think of at least 4 classes where I've been told I'm hellbound in. And that's not too liberal. Nor is that particularly compassionate conservatism...Meh, at least this prof is fun. I'll keep you updated with the Condemnation Count. ;)

I actually had a medical ethics Prof. very much like that in Champaign. He was the only person evver to accuse me of plagarism on a term paper (patently innocent, btw). I just happened to perfectly nail (quite by accident) some crap from a philosopher/ethicist type that this guy creamed over and thought was brilliant. He was certain I couldn't have made certain dedudictive leaps on my own and I must have been cribbing this guy's stuff without citing it.

I had to show him the evolution of my ideas, and it killed him to learn my approach to ethics and philosophy terrm papers at the time -- lock myself away for a couple of days with a word processor and a case of Black Label (Sadly, I had yet to refine my tastes in beer). When the beer was gone, the paper was done. :D Any way, the guy ended up having to recant his accusations, and he actually wrote me a reccommendation for grad school.

That's my number 1 fear actually. Gah, I'll wake up in a cold sweat just thinking about that.....

See, I am interested in the synopsis, maybe you can simulate how it went, a short version of course. I say/she say type thing.

Or was it your classmate who told you 4 times that you're going to hell (where BTW most fun people will be, including overwhlming majority of your favorite family members, authors, athletes, scientists, politicians, actors, etc)?

Oh, okay. Here's a Dramatic Version. All Rights Reserved.

Professor Of Boredoom: Blah, blah, blah, blah. Abortion (firestorm of hands in the air--Soxy stars blankly out the window at the beautiful Minnesota night sky and envisions picking up her diploma)

Kid 1: Abortion is the killing of a human being and has no place in a civilized society.

Kid 2: I agree.

Kid 3: I agree--as it says in the Bible (quotes bible verse number--but doesn't actually say verse) you need to respect life.

Soxy: Um, so, Bioethically, this relates to...

Professor: Well, this is one of the fundamental issues in Bioethics.

Kid: I don't see how this is in question at all--it's just wrong. If you don't want children don't have sex.

Soxy: What about married people that have abortions?

Kid: Married people don't have abortions.

Soxy: Oh. Okay.

Kid: The point is abortion is a sin and if you like abortion you are a sinner and going to hell because God does not and cannot forgive murderers.

Soxy: Well, I guess I disagree with you.

Kid: (I swear he said this) I'll pray for you.

Soxy: Thanks but I can pray for myself.

To hear y'all's academia horror tales makes me glad I never graduated from (american) HS.

If it's not a secret, who/what were you accused of plagerizing, FSJ?

Hell, I don't even remember, Brando! I had never heard of the guy, and if I've come across him since then it didn't dawn on me. I do remember that the prof. thought my negative views on a hypothetical era in which human lefespans could be extended indefinately were too eloquent to have been the work of an undergrad. I burst his bubble and told him that the same s*** had been spelled out in "Fantastic Four" comic books in the 60s with immortal-big-and-purple world-eater Galactus, who used to drone on for pages about what a drag immortalitty could be.

Y'know, it never dawned on me before, but I bet this bioethical big-brain (whoever he was) proble stole this stuff from the damn comic books

Stan Lee and Jack Kirbby - that's all the philosophy I needed as a kid. :headbang

No, the biggest problem really is that it's a rather conservative and vocal Christian minority that thinks they can convert me by condemning me. I had a lovely high school experience. But I think sometimes I should have gone to a public university.
