southsideirish
really that good? They don't have a legitimate 2nd baseman. Kenny Lofton is old and being counted on to play CF and leadoff. ARod is now going to play 3rd, is that good defensively? Giambi wasn't all that last year. Leiber is coming off of injury, Brown is old and an injury waiting to happen, Contreras didn't look so great last year, Vazquez is really good, but he is switching leagues which isn't always the easiest thing for National League pitchers to do. They don't have any other minor leaguers worth anything to trade, so if another injury does occur how are they going to get what they need when that time comes? I'm sorry but I just don't understand all the hype. When you look at all the names it is staggering, but when you take a step back and really look at them I don't think it is all that great. Especially not for 190 million dollars. Anyway, we will see how this all works out, I am just not that impressed with the Yankees at all. After I really thought about it this team might not even be as good as the 98 or 99 Yankee teams. On paper it looks amazing. But like u said they've got an OLDER team with shady defense and a thin rotation. I think you would have to say they're the favorites. But there's 4 or 5 other teams out there that can beat them... Solid defense and the lineup should be much improved with Guerrero. That is my favorite for the AL. Boston is not too shabby, but they seem to have a lot of players coming off of career years. aboz56
I am still not sold on their rotation, but I am sure they will go out and get someone after they get bombed a few times early in the season.
Queen Prawn
Brian and I were disussing this when the ARod deal came across the ticker on ESPN. I mentioned how thin their pitching is, but he brough up how potent the offense is. Of course my next point was to say, look at the Rangers and his point was that the Spanks pitching was a bit better to which I agreed. Basically, we couldn't agree on where the Spanks were going to be at the end of the year - I said not as great as everyone is expected and he thought they were going to be as great as expected. Steff
With this... Lofton CF Jeter SS Rodriguez 3B Giambi 1B Sheffield RF Williams DH Matsui LF Posada C Wilson 2B Pitching wont matter. Lofton's been "on the decline" for the past THREE years :headshake . I wish we had him while on his "decline". Half way decent pitching is all they need.. and if they need more, they'll go buy it. They need a lefthanded starter IMO. To me, every great team needs one. You saw one with Washburn on the Angels a few years back. Redman for FL last year and Pettitte in the past for the Yankees. Without a lefty, I don't think they'll win it. Of course AZ a few years back didn't have a lefty (correct me if I'm wrong) but they had two powerful aces in Schill and Randy. The Yankees this year don't have that.

aboz56
Here's a question for everyone... If George doesn't win this year with A Rod, what does he do next? Sign Pedro after this season and some others?

southsideirish
Oh sure, there are a dozen teams as good. I'm not saying the Spanks are bad by any means. Just overhyped. I think they are vulnerable in many areas. Age is one and pitching is another. Injuries are more common among older players. If they really are able to go out and get what they need inthe middle of the season I will be shocked. Their minor league system is shot. They have nothing anyone else wants. Who are they going to give up to aquire someone they need?

aboz56
Ok, so then in July, the Yankees will go out and get Washburn. Its as simple as that. They won't if the Angels are in contention. Maybe they end up with Odalis Perez, but Anaheim won't be in the business of trading Washburn to the Yankees if they are going to be facing them in the playoffs. Just won't happen, especially with Anaheim's new ownership. I think Gammons mentioned the possibility of this happening on SC and he's dead wrong. mike12345
there is no question about them being awesome...they will be in the playoffs like usual...if lofton doesnt get it done I can see them trading him for griffey or beltran(or maybe getting both)...This move really shows us that money doesnt matter for them, which everyone should know by now....Steinbrennar has proven that he will do anything to win and teams just can't compete with him...I am NOT a Yankees fan, but this is the truth that everyone knows... aboz56
You are wrong Mr. Aboz. They had Brian Anderson in their rotation. Thank you. I believe he's the same guy who is supposed to be one of the Royals best pitchers this season and the fact that I didn't remember him pretty much says it all about how good he was and is going to be this year. Thank you for pointing that out. In that series, he pitched game 3 and lost.
southsideirish
Ok, so then in July, the Yankees will go out and get Washburn. Its as simple as that. How sir? With what? Who is in the system that anyone wants anymore? Nothing good enough to aquire a Washburn I don't believe. There are 2 players I have heard, one a cather and one a 3rd baseman, but they are no where near ready.
southsideirish
Everyone here keeps saying they are going to trade for what they need. Please explain to me what they are going to trade. Their minor league system is decimated. They have virtually nothing anyone wants. Definately not for a Carlos Beltran or a Odalis Perez. I don't want to answer for Tony, but in the past, it seems as if teams think it is an honor to hand over talent to the Yankees (see the Weaver trade from the Tigers to the Spanks as an example). The Spanks seem to know how to hypnotize/rip-off teams and walk away with what they want.

I guess they could always do the low tier prospects and cash deal. Teams in need of money would do that. Hell, if they draft some decent college players in this year's draft they could trade those guys come trading deadline time.

I don't think there's anything else to it than that. Now we would all call it an act with no pride, but then again, none of us have ever had to pay Jeff Weaver 7 million dollars to get knocked around. That is one of the points people point to when looking at the scrubs rotation.
