Giants Impressive restructuring, but Alou a question. 5. Diamondbacks Randy, Curt and Elmer will provide glue. 6. Red Sox Taking gamble with closer-by-committee. 7. They lost some key members, while the Angels brought everyone back, The Yankees rebuilt a bit, so did the Sox as well as other teams. witesoxfan Posted January 31, 2003 Share Posted January 31, 2003 Rosenthal can write a good article and his inside dishes are pretty cool....but he can't predict worth a s***. Last year in prediciting winners in the playoff games, he only predicted 1 team right(compared to my 2!) and that's pretty bad...and then he judges teams based on which teams got to the LCS...so he's basically asking who is the best out of the Giants, Cards, Angels and Twins, while he doesn't consider the A's, Yankees, Braves, Phillies, Astros, D-Backs, Red Sox, Mariners or even our beloved White Sox(I didn't expect them to be #1...but I figured I'd bring them up anyways). He says that we are weak up the middle but Jose is not too bad with a stick in his hands, and the more I think about it, the more I like D'angelo Jimenez. witesoxfan Posted February 1, 2003 Share Posted February 1, 2003 BigHurt...the fact of the matter remains that we ARE weak up the middle...Jose's got a good bat and is probably a top 10 SS in the majors, and probably the 5th or 6th best SS in the AL(behind A-Rod, Tejada, Jeter, Garciaparra and possibly Vizquel), but he's our only proven quality up the middle...Jimenez showed signs of returning to form after his accident, but nothing is guaranteed. Rowand may not even be ready for CF yet, and that leaves us with either Borchard or Harris....and then you got Olivo as the starting catcher with Sandy as the backup and one of Paul, Burke, or Morales being the #3 catcher(however, if Burke can play more than just catcher, say, maybe 3B and LF and RF, as well as 1B, that is very good and he should make the team....IF he can do that, that is)....we COULD be strong up the middle....ideally, Valentin has a 2000-ish year, Jimenez has a very good year and returns to the form he had prior to his accident, Rowand is healthy and does an excellent job in CF or Borchard wins in ST and is a very good LH power hitter for us, and Olivo lives up to his expectations, and hits about .270 15 60 20 or so for us while playing excellent defense with an excellent arm....none of that is guaranteed, which is why we are weak up the middle.
