Sox Make Three Roster Moves

The hopes of three Sox players to make the roster have ended as the Sox have elected to release Marvin Bernard and Carlos Castillo from their minor league contracts while reassigning Ryan Kohlmeier to the minor league camp. There are now 50 players left in major league camp.

Bernard and Castillo signed minor-league contracts before the season. Bernard, 34, batted .279 in nine major-league seasons, all with the San Francisco Giants. He batted .322 for the Giants in 1998, while slugging 16 homers and 64 RBI's the following year. Bernard has been a source of controversy lately, as he was identified by a source as taking steroids, along with Barry Bonds and other top-notch players.

Castillo, 28, was the 3rd round pick of the Sox in the 1994 amateur draft. In four years with the White Sox and Red Sox, Castillo was 10-7 with a 5.06 ERA. His weight has been a source of concern his entire career, as he has often neared 300 pounds on the mound. This was his second attempt to make the club, after doing so successfully from 1997 to 1999.

Kohlmeier, 26, is in his third season trying to make the majors after doing so with the Orioles in 2001. Kohlmeier is a lifetime 1-3, with a 5.45 ERA. His best season was 2000, when he was 0-3 with a 2.39 ERA with 13 saves.

Good piece Alex and this is a good move, imo. Castillo and Bernard weren't going to contribute and would only be taking a spot away from other more deserving minor league players in Charlotte, imo.

Nice article there Alex, Benard leavin will certainly giv a chance to sum1.
