One of my favorite players and one of league's very best in the last 2 seasons.......I wonder what the terms are.

-- Garret Anderson, the Angels' all-time hits leader, has agreed to terms on a four-year, $48 million contract extension through 2008. The deal includes a club option for the 2009 season with a $3 million buyout.

Angels Payroll:

Wonder what effect this has on Maggs? These two guys are fairly similar players. Both corner outfielders, very similar numbers over their careers and currently. Anderson is a couple years older I guess, but seeing this deal for ~$12/year might make Maggs realize that he won't be getting $15/year. Could help our chances of us keeping Maggs or it could have no effect.

Angels Payroll:

They are one the right track.

 

It doesn't guarantee them jack squat this year, but they could easily win the World Series again.

 

Most importantly, they already won the battle -- they got their fans to care about the team again. Once Bonds retires, Beane's magic wears off and Dodgers continue their ineptitude, Angels might just become California's favorite Cinderella team.

 

If the play their chips right, they might become Atlanta Braves of the ALW.

Here's my take:

 

1. Anderson, at this point, is a superior defensive player.

 

2. Anderson has probably hit as well as Maggs in the last 3 years -- less OPS but spectacular RISP/clutch numbers to make up for the difference -- last 2 season, Anderson has basically been baseball best clutch hitter. And he did it with guys like Spezio protecting him in the order. Andeson also had postseason success, so you know big-time pressure is no problem.

 

3. Maggs has been more consistent through-out the years, but then again, that's why he made 2, 3 times what Anderson made in that span, so it's moot.

 

4. Paying Anderson 12 Mill is not that bad since Angels' payroll is 105. Paying Maggs 15 Mill, even if he was worth that, is near impossible with a 60 Mill payroll.

 

5. Then again, a GREAT (read: career) year from Magglio this year would certainly go a long way toward changing some minds. If he shows awesome power and ability to lead the Sox to ALCS, then his value would probably jump.

Anderson isn't worth anymore then Maggs is. So I think their two contracts will be pretty close. I could see Maggs getting an extra million or so. I also firmly disagree with Anderson being considered the better defensive player.

 

I watch almost as many Angel games as Sox games and without a doubt I'd take Ordonez over GA defensively. The one nice thing about GA is he can slide over to center, something I don't recommend us doing with Maggs (Although he could be alright out there).

No, Anderson isn't worth more than Maggs -- but the opposite is probably true is well. That was my point.

 

And Anderson is a Gold Glove-caliber LF'er while Maggs is only a hair-above average in right -- his range is not what it used to be IMO, and in the last couple of years, his arm has been pretty average/erratic. Plus, as you said, Anderson can play a tolerable CF.

Sox should offer him a similar contract, and Maggs should take it.
