Huge Double Standard in this Town

Featured Replies

I know this has been discussed a TON on these boards, and I apologize if I'm wasting bandwidth with this post, and I thought I'd post it in here because it is somewhat Sox related, BUT:

I am angered and surprised as hell that this hasn't been made a bigger deal of. I remember a couple years back at Comisky, I don't remember what game it was during (It might have been a Royals game), but a fan dumped beer on the CFer. Well, that created a huge stir - ESPN was all over it, how the "mean" Sox fans were to do something like that.

Well, this weekend, Ken Griffey Jr went back to right-center to retrieve a ball that had made it into the gap. While going back there, a big splash of what looked like a fluid (probably beer) was dumped right on or near Ken Griffey. Not to mention how the Cub fans just threw tons and tons of cups onto the field after numerous player emotional explosions.

I just am amazed how much of a double-standard there is in this town. Absolutely NOTHING was made of the fact that Griffey was nearly doused in beer, but when it happens during a Sox game, it's all those bad, jag-off fans on the Southside of Chicago. And, say Sox fans did throw cups onto the field like that. It's funny how when the Cub fans do it, they're just into the game and involved in the game, but when something like that on the Southside, it's like every Sox fan is labeled as the bad guy and we have to hear about it from the local and national media.

OK, Rant over. I was just dissappointed that more wasn't made of Griffey nearly being doused in beer, but oh well, I guess that that's just the way it is...

I am pretty sure it was Baldelli that got doused in beer.

lisiting firsts for wrigley

1970 outfield basket

The Cubs had already played 10 games at home when the basket wass added to "help control littering and keep exuberant patrons from leanming onto the field" the Tribune wrote.

They have a long history of trashing their own field.

How does one trash trash?

How does one trash trash?

This is an excellent question.

I wish I had the answer.

we know its a big story at our park because the "poor bums" that come out would never want to throw away their beer

As I pointed out in another thread, Jay Mariotti, of all people, actually bashed the Cub fans for trashing the field. And he even said that if it would have happened at the Cell, the Sox and their fans would have been villified. I never thought I'd say these words, but you have to give Mariotti credit.

I know it's hard to imagine but there are early season bandwagon jumpers at Wrigley. The core Cub fan is appalled at this. The "I'm just here to be scene" crowd thinks it's a cool story to tell their friends the next day over coffee at Starbucks, and the idiots are having a field day.

Thankfully they aren't at the cell with this s***.

People that throw anything on the field are idiots, whether they root for the Sox or the North side ballclub. Period!

As Jimmy Piersall said "These are fans of baseball, these are fans of far out."

Actually ESPN did have something about it. It was apart of their Cubs recap for the last game of the Reds series.

How does one trash trash?

Answer-Have Cub fans show up.
