Defensive Efficiency

Featured Replies

There are still a few people around who have the impression the White Sox have a terrible defense. This is really a misperception I think based on the fact our pitchers seem to get into jams alot and magnify any defensive miscues. Here are the current DER stats (basically % of balls in play fielded by defense) for 2004.

This chart tells me our guys are making more than the average share of plays. Also it shows me that our pitchers are giving up more than their share of homeruns and not striking anybody out.

thanks for the link dk and for the observations

Uribe and Harris hav improved our defense with their energy and hustle.

No kidding. We have 4 infielders with exceptional range:

2004 ZR (Zone Rating):

Valentin: 919 (leads all ML SS despite 4 errors, so it should improve)

Uribe: 900 (4th)

Crede: 833 (6th among all 3B....good)

Harris: 856 (7th among all 2B....will shoot up toward top 3 by year's end)

Where's Paulie :huh

I'm sure Crede will shoot up some as well by the time the season gets further on.

After finishing dead last in 2003, he has improved this year.....to the tune of 20th out 25 MLB first basemen.

Crede should work on quicker release -- takes too long to load up.

PK marching to the top

Soon enough he'll lead the league in steals too :lolhitting

Only because Matt LeCroy is on the DL. :P

You think that's funny and yet PK would beat Aparicio in a race around the bases anyday!

especially since Louie is 70 now...

I dunno, Edgar is tough to beat.

I love Cobb's quote, though.

The perception of the Sox being a bad defensive team should have died in 2003. Still, some people hold on to misconceptions in spite of numbers that prove otherwise.

For example, Jose Valentin being a lousy shortstop is a misconception that has a life of it's own.

I wouldn't call the Sox a great fielding team either. We ain't the Mariners of 2001 or Twins of 2002.

Sox used to have an abomination of an infield: Baldwin-Fordyce-Thomas-Durham-Caruso-Norton back in 1999. :puke

Now, they're no longer terrible - just average-to-above-average.
