Guillermo Reyes Demoted to Birmingham

The Charlotte Knights sent shortstop Guillermo Reyes back to the Birmingham Barons to make room for Dan Wright, who was optioned to the minors after making his last start for the White Sox.

Wright struggled in the Sox rotation going 0-4 with an 8.15 ERA. The Sox hope Wright can regain the form which helped him win the job this spring. If he can, he will likely rejoin the White Sox when they need a full time 5th starter. Danny made 15 starts for the Knights last season after spending all of 2002 with the White Sox.

Reyes joined the Knights on April 20th when Kelly Dransfeldt was promoted to Chicago after Jose Valentin was placed on the disabled list. Reyes hit .083 in four games for the Knights while batting .143 in in fourteen at-bats for the Barons this season . Last season the 22 year-old switch-hitter hit .210 with 34 RBI and 15 stolen bases with the Barons.

Impact on the Barons:

Red hot Mike Morse has been playing shortstop for the Barons and should remain the starter. Reyes could be featured as a utility man behind Morse and 2nd baseman Ruddy Yan. Reyes played two games at 2nd when Yan was nursing an early season shoulder injury.

Impact on the Knights:

Danny Wright will force the Knights to go with a six-man rotation. Up until last nights shelling, all of the Knights starters have been spectacular. The six man rotation will be a temporary move as the White Sox will likely be calling up a pitcher from Charlotte to join the rotation.

While Wright is in the rotation, Jose Valentin will continue to be the starting shortstop as he finishes up his rehab stint in Charlotte. Valentin should be with the White Sox by the end of the week with Drasnfeldt likely being sent down to Charlotte where he will be the starting shortstop.

Mn, Shaffer got a hit last nite ... raising his average over .100!

It's now at .103, wow.

Which is of course .103 better than I could do, but still ...

With Reyes sent to Barons, lets hope Shaffer finally gets released.

Reyes merely took Aceves' spot on the roster.

Shaffer hit what I believe is the hardest ball I have ever seen him hit last night, burning the CF and short hopping the CF wall.

Of course, something had to go wrong and he got thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple, making the first out of the inning at 3B. tsk tsk
