Ebb and flow of a Championship Season

We all understood that we would not be in 1st from May to October. Being swept by the Jays is a great test for Ozzie and how he stops a 3 game skid. I will be keenly interested in Tuesday's line up, strategy during the first few innings, how loose or tight the club is.

He has Mark out on the mound, days of rest, basically a clean canvas to work with.

This is so exciting.

Amazingly enough I am sitting here waiting for a plumber to unblock my sewer. I should be in a, pardon the pun, s***ty mood.

They waited a month to get swept. Last season JM and the 2003 Edition took care of that opening weekend. Isn't this better. ;)

The Sox were one of only four teams that hadn't lost 3 games in a row. They get a pass for now--every team gets swept every now and then--but the way they're losing smacks of 2003, regardless of who the manager is.

I can take dropping a series here and there, it happens. But I really dislike getting swept. I'm most frustrated this last weekend with Garland's outing and blowing a game like that by giving up a couple 2-out HRs in an inning. If we took that game and dropped the other two I'd be feeling better about it.

Curiously enough, it was a plumbing repair weekend for me as well. I got a notice from the city saying I had a leak somewhere (not looking forward to the bill), so the terlet got an overhaul.

There is never a good sweep. I think a little adversity during a season helps a team with Championship asperations. I would rather face it in May and June then down the stretch.

Ozzie has had to deal with a starter returning from the DL and now a 3 game losing streak.

Is there a difference between a 3-game sweep and a 3-game losing streak? Would losing the final 2 games of one series and the first of the next be any different? It doesn't make a difference in the standings, but still I look at the season as a series of series.

Is it true that the cubs didnt get swept once last year during any 3 game series?

I don't know about that, but they DID lose 3 in a row at the worst possible time.

Games 5 through 7 of the NLCS.

Isn't that worse than what just happened to the Sox?

I was so down for most of last season and this off season I almost hated watching the scores.

This year I expected us to be in 6th place in the Central, everyone hurt.

This team has so greatly exceded my expectations, how can I help but be happy

I think the offense on Sunday is showing signs they are ready to break out of it. I see Carlos Lee starting to go to right and right center, which was the key to his good hitting season in '03. I saw the highlights of the game on ESPNBBTN and saw the absolutely wicked liners that the Big Hurt smashed. He hit a bullet off the top of the left field fence with the bases loaded just missing the homer. He hit it so hard he could only get a single on it. The shot that Hinske caught at 3rd was another one. A highlight defensive play, but it shows the bad luck the Sox hitters are having. Now if Paul Konerko and Magglio can start hitting we will be on a roll again. Pitching is getting shaped up by Cooper I think and it will be fun to see who gets the call from AAA. I am only sorry that I have to wait till Sunday's WGN game to see one on TV.

No need to put the self-deluding, homerific spin on this.

Sox have been very mediocre since the KC series.

They got outscored by Cle and Tor and barely survived TB at home. Baltimore series, too was full of mediocre pitching, awful defense and lack of clutch htting. Sox were a Tejada error and Botch meltodown away from being swept.

This was painfully obvious way back when the Coprseball thread got started.

Last 3 games are what happens when Sox stop getting every bounce, when the luck runs out.

It will continue happening until Sox literally improve at every facet of the game. it's not up to Ozzie. It's up to every single player not named Thomas, Shingo, Cotts, Olivo and Uribe.

"Thank God for ALC" should be the 2004 Sox slogan.

Now let's take 6 games from the O's and Minny and go from there. :headbang :cheers
