beck72
'trade talks have heated up over the last 48 hours'. 'trying to fly underneath the radar, like the Colon deal'. 'Trying to get somehting done without other teams being able to trump him.'
Wedge
Interesting. They have heated up lately, as we saw the Beltran deal go down. I wonder who they are looking at... And "last 48 hours," does it maybe involve Rauch?
IlliniKrush
Door is still open on his end as far as Maggs goes Until he goes elsewhere, it's not over. It doesn't have to get done during the year. Could be a case of he wants to test his market value and just flat out won't sign anything during the year. "We're going for it, and he's part of that equation" However he said he's tradable if the right offer comes along that would improve the team, but said it's unlikely at this point. Guest JimH
I'm listening right now. He said the reason why they didn't call up Reed/Borchard when Maggs went down is because he feels Ozzie has done a good job getting other guys playing time. He said it's good to get Gload, Perez, Burke playing time because they can get in a rhythm, and that will help later in the season. He also says these guys are really good teammates. He is frustrated with the team's inconsistencies. He is being asked now about Maggs. KW says the door is not closed on the Sox's part, he says they have "something out there" which is lucrative and in the Sox's opinion, fair. He said he is maintaining the confidentiality aspect of this. As for Maggs closing the door, KW says not to his knowledge. He says it may be as simple as Maggs wanting to test the Free agent waters. KW says the Sox are "going for it", and Maggs is a big part of the equation. He says, you "never say never". He says the liklihood of trading Maggs is very very slim. He is not interested in trading Maggs for prospects. 9:22, that's it.

beck72
Interesting. They have heated up lately, as we saw the Beltran deal go down. I wonder who they are looking at... And "last 48 hours," does it maybe involve Rauch? Two teams that have completely packed it in are SEA. and KC. Sea. just got swept by Texas, and were waiting to see how they did vs AL West teams. 0-3, with some 14 games under .500 is a big enough hint to pack it in. Also, there are teams who are close to first who are struggling and may feel pressure to make a deal [like Houston, LA, Ana, Phil, Bos]. Teams may be willing to overpay, like Oak. did to get Dotel. With the Beltran trade over, there should be less pressure on marginal teams to make deals this early. If teams wait too long the could get less prospects as there will be less teams to trade with and drive up the price.
Wedge
Yeah, Sea I'm sure is going to be packing it in soon, but in a way, that's not "flying under the radar" since everybody wants Garcia. I was wondering if the partner was maybe the Rockies or perhaps... the Diamondbacks?
beck72
The most interesting aspect of his tak was the part about flying under the radar, ala the Colon trade. SP and bullpen guys that haven't been widely mentioned as trade targets, with teams that are likely to pack the season in. Newsday reported today that ATL is scouting NYY minor league guys, and that Russ Ortiz may be available. Names that haven't been tossed about that much, but some. Any other ATL pitchers, besides the obvious Smoltz? I've also seen Ben Sheets name in a few papers. Moyer. I can see a bullpen guy gotten first by the Sox. The best will be traded pretty quick. Food for thought
IlliniKrush
Seattle needs to realize there's no way in hell they are going to win that division, they are way behind all 3 teams. The likeliness of them playing 10 games better than tex, ana, and oakland is not very good, not with that roster.

beck72
I was wondering if the partner was maybe the Rockies or perhaps... the Diamondbacks? Colo. and Ariz have no one who does much for me. Except Randy J. but that's not happening.
Wedge
I heard Moyer came out of the bullpen the other night... anybody know if that's right? So the thinking is: Moyer Smoltz Ortiz Sheets I wonder if KW has the bullets to pull off the fleecing of the decade: Garcia AND Guardado

I was wondering if the partner was maybe the Rockies or perhaps... the Diamondbacks? Interesting theory, could be. It would definitely fit the description of "flying under the radar", right? One other thing on the interview, right at the end Cub Fan Murph said to KW, hey I've got a proposition for you. If you want, I can get you a seat in the center field bleachers next weekend (when the Sox play at Wrigley). You can put on a Sox hat and sit out there with all the Cub fans. Said KW: "Hey, I might take you up on that. I'm not scared of those people."

Sea also has to realize that the longer they wait, the less theyll get for their guys. More teams will fall out of contention and make trades. Then the buyers will be fewer. Hopefully the Beltran deal will spur these teams on to tarde their vets.
CWSGuy406
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that Kenny is going to surprise us all again and get one of: Smoltz, Glavine, or the Big Unit. He always seems to go away from what popular belief is. He will get us a big name by the end of next month, that's my one prediction of the month. Seeing what OAk gave up for Dotel Eddie would bring in a king's ransom. Another team is LA. Guillermo Mota's name has come up in trade talk. Maybe for a big bat or a SP. Mota would look sweet in the 'pen, with Damaso and Shingo. PK for Mota anyone? The Sox need another setup guy who could double as a closer if Shingo falls off. Any bets that something will get done during this series, i.e. this weekend? When he says trade talks have heated up, that's a sure sign he's damn close to something. Otherwise he always says he's working every day to improve the club. As important as this series is, so is the next one vs. Minnesota. Bring in an established pitcher = huge emotional boost, amidst 9 of the most intense games of the year? Stay tuned.

Guest JimH
The big bat the Dodgers are trying hard to get, it's been said, is Delgado from Toronto. The LA media has been talking about this for a while ... Delgado and Shawn Green are best buds.
