Borchard/Reed

Old Socks

Recommended Posts

My first thought when I heard JB was recalled was that it could have been Reed joining the Sox. It would have been the start of an "era." We'll all see how Joe does, but I don't expect much.

I have seen two posts on this board that implied Seattle preferred Borchard, but KW insisted we keep him at the expense of Reed. I just can't believe it. Do you Chicago residents have any info on this?

First of all even if we had kept Reed instead of Borch, I'm not so sure Reed would have been called up to replace Frank on the DL. We might have brought up another pitcher instead, because

1) Reed wasn't setting the world on fire at Charlotte

2) Still fears of a wrist injury hampering him as shown by his hitting in May, early June.

Borch deserved to be called up by his play, he's been showing some fairly good form at the plate, although if you take away a hot May, he's only been hitting .240. It's definitely a risk, and we shouldn't expect Borch to set the world on fire, if he can hit around the .250 mark with a few RBI's and not many K's, I'll be very happy with Joe.

Plus, they didn't want to ruin Reed's trade value if he did become a bust, or at least didn't fair well in his first call up. Many feel it is unlikely, but it is possible.

I agree... I think if we had both Borchard and Reed I would have been pissed if we called up Reed. That's not to say I don't think Reed has the chance to be a very effective major league player, it's just JB fits better right now.

For starters Reed was struggling a little at AAA, now that's probably because of his wrist injury, but scouting reports have that information and pitchers would have pitched in on his hands every at-bat. I also think that if Borchard hits one of his hot streaks when he's called up he can put up significant numbers hitting 7th or 8th in this line-up.

Also, it's s*** or get off the pot time for JB. He's 25 and has had a substantial number of at-bats in the minors. I've seen that people say his problem is that he's overly intense (Basically he brings the football player mentality to baseball, which is often hard to manage for a 160 game season as compared to a 12-14 game college football system). If it doesn't work out it seems like the Cowboys are always in the market for busted baseball prospects (he can back up Hutchison and Henson at QB!)

I don't know what JB the Sox are going to get, but I'm actually excited to see how this works out, I think he has a chance to make a good impact
