July 25, 200421 yr Link: It won't delay start of season JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) -- A South African soccer referee pulled a gun and shot dead a coach who questioned one of his rulings, police said on Sunday. Inspector Mali Govender of the Grahamstown police in the Eastern Cape province said a fight broke out after the referee gave a yellow warning card to a player in a local match on Saturday. "There was an altercation...and the referee became threatened when the other team approached him because they were angry," Govender said. "So he pulled out a gun and killed the coach of the visiting team." Govender said the coach died on the field while the referee fled the scene. Police were confident of making an arrest soon, she added.

July 26, 200421 yr be glad the home plate ump didn't pull out a gun and shoot Trammel yesterday or Mariotti would have written a column
July 26, 200421 yr Why did the ref have a gun on him? That's weird south africa has the highest murder rate per capita in the world, and there have been numerous reports of officials being shot during/following soccer games. just another reason why soccer should be wiped off the face of the earth.
July 26, 200421 yr And they have the nerve to b**** about a few fist fights here and there..sheesh. Soccer people around the world are just f***in loons.
July 27, 200421 yr Had the home plate ump done it yesterday, Mariotti would have blamed it on the atmosphere at the Cell.
