I have a debate with a couple friends over this. I thought that if there is a line drive over third base, the ball is lower than 6 ft and it ends up landing in fair territory that it is a FAIR ball.

 

As long as it is fair when it goes over the bag it is fair. Anyone know for sure?

Do you mean it ends up in foul territory? If so, then it's foul.

 

If you actually mean a ball goes over the bag, and hits in fair territory, it's a fair ball.

If it hasn't hit the ground before passing 3rd base, it all depends on where it lands. Fair territory, its fair, foul territory, its foul.

No. Any ball that has not bounced in front of the bag - that is, goes over the bag in the air - that ball is fair or foul depending on where it lands. How high it is doesn't matter.

In fact, here's the official rule:

 

"A Fair ball is a batted ball that settles on fair ground between home and first base, or between home and third base, or that is on or over fair territory when bounding to the outfield past first or third base, or that touches first, second or third base, or that first falls on fair teritory on or beyond first or third base, or that, while on or over fair territory touches the person of an umpire or player, or that, while over fair territory, passes out of the playing field in flight."

While we are on questions, here is one me and my friends were trying to figure out...

 

Is the distance written on the outfield wall the number of feet (or meters in Canada ) from home plate to the base of the wall, or number of feet inorder for the ball to clear the fence?
