Cubs and WGN-TV announce Brenly as analyst

The Chicago Cubs and WGN-TV announced Tuesday that Bob Brenly will join the Cubs broadcast team with a multi-year deal starting with the 2005 season. Brenly, who spent the last four years as the manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks, also was a member of the Cubs broadcast team with WGN Radio during the 1990-1991 seasons.

Brenly, 50, started his television broadcast career in 1996, working as an analyst on FOX broadcasts during marquee baseball events, including the All-Star Game, Championship Series and the World Series. After a two-year stint with FOX, Brenly saw his first full-time booth action by spending three seasons (1998-2000) on the Arizona Diamondbacks television broadcast team.

"We're absolutely delighted to have a baseball man of Bob's caliber join WGN and the Cubs," said WGN vice president and general manager, Tom Ehlmann. "We're looking forward to working with him and having a great relationship."

A nine-year veteran as a catcher with the San Francisco Giants (1981-1989) and the Toronto Blue Jays (1989), Brenly was a career .247 hitter and appeared in the 1984 All-Star Game.

"Bob brings terrific broadcasting credentials to the booth," said Cubs senior vice president of marketing and broadcasting, John McDonough. "We're thrilled to have him with us."

He started his coaching career in 1992 as the bullpen coach for Roger Craig and the San Francisco Giants. Brenly spent the next three seasons as a member of manager Dusty Baker's staff with the Giants.

Brenly held his first managerial position in 2001 with the Diamondbacks, leading his squad to the World Series title and first place finishes in two of his three full seasons at the helm. After three seasons in the dugout, he was released from his duties as manager in July of 2004. Brenly again joined the FOX broadcast team as an analyst during the 2004 National League Championship Series.

I didn't really like him during the postseason broadcast this year. Fittingly, he's going to the Cubs. I wonder who's going to be joining him.

This is only because he is friends with Dusty, therefore won't hate on him.

What a bunch of bulls***.
