November 18, 200421 yr A few days ago I'd questioned whether a team losing a free agent gets a draft choice from the signing team, if the previous team declined an option on the player. Example, Vizquel. Cleveland declined his option, SF signed him. I had read on another board that since the team declined his option, they were renouncing all rights to the player and were therefore not entitled to draft choice compensation. Incorrect. I believe redandwhite stated as such but he didn't explain why, nor his source. Here is the info from today's Ask BA: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "There's a misconception apparently circulating on message boards everywhere that declining an option is the equivalent of non-tendering a player, and that a team that does so forfeits its right to free-agent compensation. That's not the case. A player whose option is declined is in the same situation as one whose contract runs out. He's a free agent whose former club will receive compensation if he meets the Type A/B/C requirements, is offered arbitration and signs elsewhere." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cleveland gets a draft pick from the Giants. More interesting, I wonder if BA is reading SoxTalk? Our thread was quite long, wouldn't surprise me if they picked up on it. Anyway, this is the correct info and I thought I should post it since I'm the one who had read the wrong info and assumed it was correct.
November 18, 200421 yr Yeah maybe next time they'll talk about our thread when we're right and not wrong
November 18, 200421 yr Quality Post, Jim... Now if we could find the lurking quickman around here....
November 18, 200421 yr I believe dbaho posted a list of all the type a free agents in the thread jimh is referring to. He also found it on baseball america.
November 19, 200421 yr I didn't realize that Cleveland had offered arbitration. I don't know if the sox will to anyone...we might not get any draft choices.

They probably hadn't before Vizquel was signed. But now that he has signed, the Tribe will certainly "offer" arbitration. They have until December 7th to do so. Unless Magglio signs before 12/7, the won't get a draft choice.
